Tigers vs. rangers Game Thread August 11

Blame Villareal more than Coke; then blame Leyland for not matching up a right handr with Olt. Then blame the entire offense for not making any adjustments against Holland.

Unless the pitch is a ball... Then your ahead... I could care less if prince and MC swing at the first pitch.. But when your a crappy hitter like BB you need to see a pitch... Never know you may get ahead in the count..

Yes Bob, that much is obvious. If the pitch does not look good you take it, but if it looks good, and you pass on it then what? You may never see another like it.

Bottom line, sometimes first pitch swinging is bad, if you have a pitcher with suspect command, who's not been locating, or you trying to drive a pitch count up...that was not the case here, it was the opposite.

But this was a situation where you need to get a ball that look good to you, so you can hit it hard.

You can complain that he failed in the AB, which he did..the run didn't score, but it's not any more of a fail than if he did the same thing after seeing 5 pitches.

I refuse to blame coke tonight, I blame leyland.

Nope, can't really blame Coke, he didn't walk the first 2 batters in a walk-off win situation.

I was actually pleased he came as close as he did to getting out of it.

Brennan is hitting .185 with no count and .455 with one strike on him. If he does not know that, he should. He is the biggest enigma I've ever seen at the plate.

yep, and we all knew that Olt would walk off once he left Coke in. he should never, ever, EVER be allowed to face righties.

The Tigers are now 14-10 in Justin Verlander starts this season. (25-9 last year). Verlander's ERA this year: 2.46. In 2011: 2.40.

That was BV's shot to see if he can take the next step and he failed miserably, Jim expressed some disgust in the post game interview over those two walks in the 9th, you just can't do that.

Looks like BV will be staying as the 6th/7th inning guy, When is Al al coming back?

Well I'm not pissed at him for trying to hit the first pitch, I'm pissed that he didn't track the slider properly and pull his hands back.

I could give a fuck what count he hits/sac-flys in, but he has to do it...and he failed.

I blame our batters for leaving the bases loaded. Sickening game, reminding me of the 1st third of the season. Still, one game, can take the series tomorrow.

Did he say anything about BB's terrible at bat?

hell he may not even end up the team leader in wins this year at this rate, who woulda thunk.

It's absolutely inexcusable to walk the leadoff man in the late innings. Period.

But to walk the leadoff and second guy back-to-back, deserves a real ass-chewing.

Did Smokes also express disgust over his coaching staff being asleep at the switch over Hamilton missing third? Or Coke facing Olt? Or in his offense's abject failure to hit the baseball? Or in Barksdale gagging on two easy checked thirds?

And hence if he takes a pitch he may track the second one better :)

Yeah, which is one of the foundations to my argument that wins for a pitcher are not a measure of value.

Max Scherzer has one less Win.

Post game JV question was does this one sting a little bit more since you only gave up 1 run on a broken bat single.

He took a really long pause before he answered diplomatically...

Verlander has faced top 2 offenses in AL last two GS (NYY/Tex)...he's gone 15IP, allowed 1ER on 16H, 1BB/22K...impressive...

We're in trouble if we can't get wins with JV on the mound, no fault of his own of course but they need to score more runs for him. He should be much greater than 12-7. Not sure what the record is when he leaves the game with a ND. But this one bites.
