Besides the fact that Laird caught the ball...the play shouldn't have been called dead, like the umpire called it; Laird should have had the opportunity to tag the hitter or throw down to the bag at first, shouldn't he have?

Unless they home plate ump is saying the ball was foul tipped - which it sure didn't look like to me...
