Tigers vs. Royals September 27, 2020 Game 58

I grew up in a rural area. Sometimes we had to play 2 on 2 using a tennis ball so the ball wouldn't go too far. Had to play in a yard that was long and narrow. Tree line and bushes on both sides were outs. Pitcher's hand out (on the mound) at any base.

It was an odd way to play, but it was so much fun.
Sounds like it. When we only had access to a street, we used a whiffle ball and bat. Between me and my friends house we would throw a tennis ball on the brick and if it got to his upper porch it was a home run (not easy), Double if it got past the other guy, or triple if it got to the yard.

So much fun being young.

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers readers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic. So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our baseball-lovin? peeps.
Today, we center the discussion on how you interpret the results of the Tigers? 58-game season.
As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

The 2020 baseball year saw a 60-game season with the Tigers actually playing only 58 of those games. They ended the year with a 23-35 record, earning them last place in the AL Central and 12 games out of first place. In a full season, this would be the equivalent of a 64-98 season.

However, this projected record doesn?t necessarily take into account the numerous injuries that happened to their top offensive players in August.
They were hurt in what was essentially the second month of a regular 6-month season. How would the rest of the year have played out performance-wise given this?

On the other hand, several players had what appears to be break-out years. Another one has inserted himself into the Rookie of the Year chatter. And there are now several positions that appear to be filled moving forward ? unlike last year. And the Tigers have promoted a number of prospects to Detroit.

So how did you see this season? Was it a better year for Detroit? Is the team stuck? Have they regressed? Or is 58 games simply too small of a sample size?
You tell us!

Compared to the 2019 season, in 2020, the Detroit Tigers are?.
1. Visibly improved.

2. Looking promising.

3. Looking the same.

4. Worse.

5. Season too short to tell.

6. Not sure.

The GM dominos have started to fall. Rumors about the Angels & Cubs. Mets will change, too. Now, the Phillies.
Crickets from Motown as the Detroit Tigers go into Year 7 of a rebuild with years to go & a GM given an extension with an expiration date the team refuses to reveal.

20 SEPTEMBER THOUGHTS.
Totally Tigers

What did we find out about 60-game baseball seasons? They go by really fast. Like lightning. And before you know it, you are forced to gather your thoughts and put a bow on an entire season.

But before we do that, we have to wrap up the final month of the season for the Tigers. It?s time to finalize September.

So let?s not waste any time and get to it. Just like normal, topics will be random and all over the map, the way we like them.

Holdovers remain important for thoughts that need more time to simmer.

So, let?s get rolling! Please enjoy another monthly compilation of 20 Thoughts ? September style!

With the end of the season, it?s time to give out final grades for the year. Such as it was.
We realize that the Tigers played only 2 months, but what were the bright spots? What were the ugly little bits? And how would a full 6-month season have played out?
Our 2 bloggers will take all of that into consideration as they grade 10 categories ? with only 1 sentence each allowed to explain their grade.
As always, Kurt and Holly don?t share their opinions in advance of publishing. So let?s see if they are on the same page.

1. OFFENSE.

2. DEFENSE.

3. STARTING PITCHING.

4. BULLPEN.

5. PROSPECTS.

6. FREE AGENTS (signings).

7. COACHING.

8. MANAGING.

9. FRONT OFFICE.

10. OVERALL TEAM PERFORMANCE.
