Tigers vs. yankees Game Thread August 9

I honestly believe we'd have the best record in the AL right now if smokes didn't have these brain farts every now and again. Today's management job might be one of the worst on the year for him.

Berry in Center over Jackson because Jackson needed a day off yet he puts Jackson in as a Pinch runner the 5th? oh ok half a day off then. LOL..point being did he need a day off or not and if not why not start him

Doesn't Pinch hit for barley over .200 Ramon in the 9th
Keeps bringing in struggling pen guys with small leads instead of stretching out guys that have been lights out once in a damn while all because he's stubborn.

just bad managing Jim, the D is hungry, very hungry for a WS title all you gotta do is not out manage yourself!

You are so right, and he has been poor a number of times this year..

I don't think we have the best record even if Connie Mack was our manager, with John McGraw, Casey Stengel, and Joe McCarthy as his staff.

We have just had too many players play poorly. Leyland has done some incredibly stupid things, and has no idea how to handle a bullpen, but there are a lot of places fingers can be pointed for how we got to where we are, which, is still in the thick of the playoff and central division hunt.

How crazy is this stat line, last 16 appearances for Benoit, 15.1 IP 12 hits, 2 BBs, 12 Ks, .913 WHIP. Sounds pretty good right? Well, 10 of those 12 hits were HRs so his ERA is 7.04 for those games. Insane, I've never seen anything like that.

You'll never see anything like it again either. You could bet your life that you will never see another reliever give up 12 hits and 10 of those be home runs. That's such an anamoly. He gives up 1 hr in his first 35 IP and now 10 home runs out of 12 total hits in the last 15 innings. It's an impossibility. Like Price said...I could go out there and throw 4 seamers and I wouldn't give up 10 home runs on 12 hits.

cmlfactor,nydo77, you guys were right, sorry 'bout that.

Didn't watch the game, the MLB/recap has Dirks making that play.

...what a couple of frustrating losses.

God, I hate calling to take work days off to watch Tiger games.

How many emergency hernia surgeries for your sister do you get away with before they start calling you on it?

A poorly managed game by Leyland is common place, he's a poor ingame strategist.

I'm just surprised somebody tried telling me that Ichiro doesn't suck.

I am tired of it... Jim gives many games away each year.. Beyond frustrating..
What the freak is wrong with JB...

What the fuck is the point of pinch running Avila if the guy you put in can't score on a single...

I thought the same thing with Baker on the bench, unless Laird is faster than Baker. other wise just a dumbass move by Sparky.

The explanation could be that he didn't want to involve three players in the substitution. But I don't get why Avila was pulled at all.

The other explanation was that Baker was the last position player left on the bench. If you tie and get caught in a long extra-inning game and someone gets hurt then you're really screwed.

On the other hand, I've heard Leyland say several times that he doesn't like pinch-running for the catcher because then if your backup gets hurt you're in trouble. Well if you put Laird in to run for Avila you're burning your backup catcher anyway, so why not put a guy in who can score on a single?

I just don't understand the man's logic.

he has no logic, he just pulls things out of his ass at random. i cant wait til he's gone.

no idea. hopefully someone with more modern thinking. leyland's mismanaging has gotten progressively worse while he's been here. its time for a change.

I have heard rumors that Phil Nevin is being groomed to be the next Tiger's manager. I'm not sure why else he would be managing in AAA unless he wants to manage in the majors.

Baker and Delmon were the last guys on the bench, it made sense to run Laird for Avila because Laird runs significantly better.

Baker was probably being saved in case they used Delmon and we only tied, or if we needed another infielder for some reason.

The really stupid thing was not Laird for Avila, but letting Santiago and Berry make 2 outs, when, as much as I dislike him, Delmon is a far better option to get a fly ball than either of them, and a fly ball at least gets you another inning.
