Tigs 5/2 Lineup vs Royals.

I tend to defend Leyland because most people bash him so much. Is he the best manager in MLB...I doubt it....but I really don't know who is. There probably isn't a fan base of any team that likes their manager becuase it is so easy to second guess his in-game decisions. I don't think the in-game decisions made are what makes a good manager. It's what happens behind the scenes....dealing with the players and their personalities. The in-game decisions are just a small part of his job.

I don't defend Leyland. I agree that he's a slightly above average manager.

I get the numbers you posted, they are straightforward. Dotel has been better than Benoit. The example I posted, which you ignore, is that currently Laird is hitting better than Avila. Do you want the manager to go by the latest numbers, ignoring expected production? I don't. It seems you want him to based on hindsight, which I think is BS. I have a consistent opinion on this and you seem to waver based on the result.

There's nothing wrong with disagreement and back and forth. I'm assuming that if you didn't want to have this discussion, you wouldn't keep posting. What would be the point of having a discussion board where everyone has the same opinion?

I get what you are saying but I just believe there is a big difference between Larid and Avila and talking about the relief pitchers and how they are used... i understand the debate between small and large sample sizes I just don't like that fact that Jim uses the small sample size to bench Peralta verses CC but lets JB pitch when he is struggling with his small sample size.. I understand we have and Jim likes to use certain guys in the 7-9 innings.. That game was tied in the 9th and all the roles were off the table. Use your hot guy... We may still lose but you never know... I would have posted if I was home right when JB came into the game if i was home. I was not so i had to use my hindsight button..JB is struggling.. If he continues his role may need to be tweaked.. But he had a rough start last year too so we shall see. Hopefully the bats will heat up tonight.. I do disagree with some people who think a manager cannot win games for you... I just get frustrated with some of the things Jim does.. We all know how one game can impact a season... (2009), and last year are big examples.....

I defend Leyland at times, because it seems many people think he's a bad manager because of the outcome of a few games.

At the same time I complain about him when he does things that just don't make sense. (mostly lineup order, and defensive positions)

Overall, he is a good manager, not one of the greats, but def. above average.

Someone will always call for his head when something happens they don't agree with, and also he rarely gets credit that is due. We won 95 games last year and people still complain about how we gave 20 games away because he was stupid, well I got news for all those people, the 2011 Tigers were not a 115 win team, I don't care if the manager had been John McGraw or Connie Mack.

Smokey will never be loved in Detroit, even though he took us from being the Royals to being competitive nearly every season he's been here, and I don't think he gives a shit if people like him or not.

For the record, IMHO, Dotel has been fantastic, but I still think Benoit is the go to guy.
