Van Noy can return to practice next week

As soon as they picked Van Noy I thought it was so we could play both a 4-3 and a 3-4. Our DC has always been more of a 3-4 coach but our personal are set for a 4-3 for at least this year. Our LBers are really the strength of the D right now. they are athletic and versatile. Especially when playing the Cards and pats we need to give Palmer and Brady different looks. If we line up the same way every play they will pick us apart. You need to make them think and get them guessing where the pressure will come from. Ziggy and Van Noy played every spot at BYU and did it well they can do it here as well. That was my main issue with Gunther is he never changed anything our D was very predictable. Now with Austin he isnt afraid to take some chances and give a team different looks.

Exactly. He's already thrown some 3-4 out there from time to time..

When we had all the hires Austin was the one I was most excited about .. so far so good.

I still think Ansah makes the most sense as a DE, even in the 3-4. He's athletic, for sure, but I wouldn't want to see him in coverage. His strengths are still on the line, getting penetration and stopping the run.

Ansah was a 3-4 OLB in college. Actually he played every position in the front 7 of the 3-4 in college. I wouldnt want him dropping much in coverage but he can do it and I think he would surprise some people.

@278 pounds he can easily play DE in a 3-4. levy and Tulloch in the middle. van noy on the outside. draft a OLB pass rushing specialist opposite van noy. whitehead moves inside if Tulloch leaves.

I know UM moved Jake Ryan to MLB this year, mostly out of necessity. To me he is an ideal 3-4 OLB pass rusher. I think even Sparty+Lion fans would not be too disappointed in him filling that role.

Granted, it won't happen. Lions need more "weapons" for Stafford, so they won't go after their OLB until round....5??? (Ok, Sparty fans, let's hear how Jake will still be available when the Lions pick in Round 7! lol)

Whitehead was a rush OLB at Temple. Ansah's strengths would be more at OLB than 3-4 DE for sure though but he might abe able to swing it. He's not a two gapper though.

Unknown really how well Suh, Jones, Tayor and Reid could play 3-4 DE. I don't see a nose tackle on the roster really. Tulloch and Levy are a little small for a 3-4 ILB but they are both beasts so I don't think it would be a big problem.

4-3 is working out very well. Got to keep Suh.

Not sure if Ryan will be there in the 7th......but I know Countess should be. That guy is fucking terrible!

I'm good with Suh leaving, thanks. Would much rather use that money for Stafford to have at least 10 more weapons. ;P

Seriously though, if Suh leaves (more likely his choice than Lions) then I can see them switching to 3-4. They would need to use Suh's money to get a solid NG and OLB stud, so it would likely be a wash in terms of contracts. There would maybe be a little left to re-sign someone to bigger contract or be a little more active in FA to get better on the OL (specifically thinking they need to get a new center pretty damn soon).

Depends who is on the market. Stud NTs and OLBs usually aren't. Sometimes you get lucky with an older Ware or Dumervil.

We'll have some money even if we re-sign Suh and will need alot less replacements and have more depth (LB/Dline specifically) if we stick with the 4-3. Though George Johnson, Mosley and Tapp are all free agents too (but easily re-signed). 4-3 is working very well for us. Nice little test to see what life is like with Suh and no Fairley in the coming weeks. I'd rather cut Bush (Riddick), Tulloch (due to Whitehead/Van Noy) and Jason Jones just to keep Suh.

9 million dead money if Suh walks still. We'll still have money either re-signed or him walking but we won't get a ton with escalating Calvin contract.

Center, Travis Swanson. People will need to start accepting that. Might need a new LG or RT though. Depends how Waddle finishes and his health (often injured). Plus still have a draft for Oline help and future CB 2 and DT replacement (Fairley gone).

I expect the team will go OG in the 2nd or 3rd next year. Sims is having a terrible year and he'll be on the wrong side of 30 by next season. Depending on BPA, we may hit O-line twice with our top 3 picks.

It helps that OG and RT generally aren't first round prospects.

Or, LT in first round and move Rieff to the other side. Just sayin...I'd prefer CB as Mathis isn't getting any younger.

I like the idea of getting a LT and moving Reiff assuming it's a stud LT.

Wouldnt mind a corner in the first and guard in the second or third round. A big dt would be nice if we are going to stay with the 4-s but throw in some 3-4

there will be value at corner at 15-32 in the draft. I hope that's where were picking or Stafford blows.

I don't think we'll be picking high enough for a day one starter at LT. Also, Reiff has probably been our best lineman this year, improving pretty soundly on his first year as a starter. It makes a lot more sense to get a new RT who likely can be found later in the draft and upgrades an actual position of need. As easy as we like to think shifting form LT to RT might be, it doesn't work for everyone.
