Verlander says no contract talk during the season

Verlander declined to comment on talks about contact extension with Tigers.
Said he did not dispute what JonHeyman@CBS previously reported.

Here is what I would do next offseason w/JV: Offer him 2 or 3 different contracts. The first would be a contract that is heavily front-loaded for the first half of it so, for example, 6 years, $$180MM, but the first 3 would be $40 MM and the last 3 would be 30, 20, and last, 10 MM in his final year. This would make him more desirable in any future trade scenario, even if he was to gradually decline. Of course, a "no trade clause" could not be in the contract. The second would also be 6 years, but include incentives that are heavily backloaded, including club option years for a 7th and 8th year, taking him to age 40. This is to take advantage of his brash confidence in pitching much like he is now, but when he is in his mid-late 30s.

If Justin really thinks/believes that he still will be able to throw FBs in the mid-high 90s late in games, when he is age 36-38, then offer him a contract that will reward him for being able to do so, but not if he can't anymore. Include a mid-contract year buyout as well, say $$20MM in year 4, when he will be age 36.

The last contract could be a much shorter, but eye-popping 3 year, $$100MM contract extension through '17, which would enable the Tigers to have him through what most likely would be their entire current window of WS opportunity, when their contracted core players being currently Anibal, Justin, Prince, and Miggy will all still mostly be in their primes, and the ballclub's elderly owner, Mike Ilitch, might still remain vertical and mostly lucid through age 87. Can't include any other desirable players who would/may need new contracts or extensions during this WS window, such as Avila, Fister, and maybe Jackson, or perhaps less likely to be retained, Scherzer, Porcello, Dirks, and Infante.

I guess this is the bad part about having great players, dead money. I expect Fielders stats to take a nose dive during his big contract. Same with JV, if we do sign him one. Miggy I'm okay with, his skill set says he still performs in his mid-30's or after.

Sometimes I wish we were the Tampa Bay Ray's, draft well, when studs become too expensive - trade for prospects.

The Ray got that way because they were terrible for years, and never had Randy Smith as a GM.

There is no advantage right now for the Tigers to sign an extension, it would be all Verlander's.

If I were DD, I would trade JV right now while his value is at it's peak. It isn't going much higher, and it certainly can drop a ton.

OK, if you say so... You are trying to get a MLB job, aren't you Rebbiv ?

Tigers without Verlander will not win the division.

You are overvaluing Verlander. Verlander isn't worth an "additional" 10 wins by himself. He is maybe 3-5 wins above average on a great season. 2-3 wins on a good season.

Flipping Verlander for a young corner OFer, a young middle infielder and possibly a young pitcher doesn't help this team long term? Or even short term?

I am like any other Tiger fan. I would love for Verlander to finish his career as a Tiger. But there is a point where his salary "demands" are going to be cost prohibitive for continued team success.

And FYI...I love my current job and where I live. Why would I want to ruin that by working for MLB?

I have to agree with what Reb just said. We all want JV here for the duration and without him the Tigers are still favorites and would still have a better rotation than the other ALC teams.

I never really though about trading Verlander until he started spewing "I want to be the highest paid" "I want to be the first $1B pitcher" etc. Who says that unless you're all about the money? This will not be a fun negotiation.

You made an unsubstantiated statement. Not a fact. What statistical evidence do you have that backs up your claim?

if you hold a team to less than 3 runs you have a better chance of winning than allowing more than 4 runs. fact.
