Verlander says no contract talk during the season

That's like the anti-superstar list, lol.

Yep, but I didn't post that they were superstars. Just some examples of former Tigers who became pariahs here. But Mesa, Valverde, Willis and Inge were once All-Stars, and Willis was also an NL ROY in '03 and Cy runner-up in '05.

I know, just thought it was funny. No disrespect to your post..

lol. Ive senn numerous threads over the years to trade guys like Verlander, Yzerman, Suh, Stafford, Miggy.......even CJ out of Detroit. Its pathetic...

Tell me im wrong

Translation: I heard 3 guys making a post about trading a guy. Lol.

Fans aren't asking those guys you listed to be traded. A couple nut balls bring it up, whoopee de do..

But what do you expect Tony? From a fan perspective, I'd love to have JV and Miggy, and Megatron, etc. all play the rest of their careers in Detroit.

But those guys also have value beyond fan perspective. It's very likely that if we keep Verlander at some point he will be far less valuable than what we're paying him, so the question (and it's a fair question) becomes, is he worth more in the long run by trying to sign him, which we can't guarantee, to an enormous contract which will likely have repercussions on our spending ability, or by trading him while his value is at it's peak?

It's just discussion, but very valid in my opinion.

This is wrong too, nothing about pondering the possible haul and stake in the future, by trading a player makes those people who bring it up "nut balls".

Tony is right. If you listen to talk radio you here this crap all the time. To some degree I get it with a salary cap sport. Baseball doesn't work the same. If our billionaire owner wants to give a few guys 20-30 million per year and they are excellent producers for us and top dawgs in all of baseball, then so what? He's still adding other solid players to the roster as well. Let him do it.

As soon as some fans see our payroll is high they automatically start wanting to cut costs. I don't get that. That would only make sense if he said we can sign Verlander for 30 million per year but now we have to cut ties with Miggy and fill the rest of the roster spots with minor leaguers. That's not happening. Let him spend HIS money and let us keep our superstar players.

I think it's more about the return than the financial savings. And Ilitch won't be around forever.

You're talking talk radio. We all know those people have the dumbest opinions ever.

Mentioning it as "maybe we should trade this guy for a bunch of first round picks" is not the same as running them outta town.

lol. 3 guys? Im talking over the years, Mitch. Cmon now.

Ive seen MULTIPLE threads over the years wanting our stud players gone through trade or release...lol. It just makes me laugh because they're so unrealistic.

I would NEVER trade Verly....EVER. He is a once in a lifetime kind of pitcher. Another GM would have to give up the farm and then some, then throw in some more. What GM is willing to do that? I dont even DD could manage a straight face about trade talks with Verlander.

I wouldn't trade him now, he's the best. But let say next July, no contract is done - would you be willing at that time? Things can change quickly, I mean who would think about trading Miggy yet it happened.

I see your point, but lets be honest here, the Marlins are a fn joke letting him go. They just unload everybody because nobody goes to their games...lol.

And i would LOCK UP Verlander for whatever money he wants.

I would too, I think ;-) but the earliest we can negotiate with JV is next off-season, his last season. Not sure I'm 100% sure he'll stay or get a contract done.

Next July is too late if you are looking to maximize your return. 1/2 half year rental, even Verlander, is not going to garner the same in trade.

And why are we limiting this to prospects? I am looking at young, starting corner OF and/or SS in return. Not prospects.

But, let's say it is prospects. I would certainly be interested in a trade that involved Leonys Martin and Jurickson Profar. Who knows, you might even get Mike Olt in the same trade. You do the trade now, you "could" get all three. You wait until July of next year, you "might" get one of the 3.

I would too, young players that have already proven themselves. But what kind of talent can you get for a 31 year old SP who will get a huge payday, for possible 1/2 rental. But if the earliest we can try working out a deal would be next off season, so if you don't think a deal is imminent than you take offers. I assume next reg. season he won't want to work on a deal either..

Somehow Mike Ilitch's legendary penchant for generously rewarding his "loyal" veteran players with huge salaries and looong contracts-extensions is being lost here in this thread. Robertson and even Willis also come to mind, not to mention what he always did (pre-cap) for his veteran Red Wing players. "Sell by" dates don't seem to faze him whatsoever...

I hope he's here for a long time, Ilitch, but he looks like death.

So did my grandmother, but she lived another two decades to age 96+...not saying that Ilitch won't eventually become "too old" to maintain control over his franchise, and could start to lose his marbles, but that might not happen yet for @ least 5+ years from now.

Llitch looks 96 now..
