Things keep going well for him and he will get his 3rd Cy Young award. Two with the Astros along with his only WS title...he will probably go to the HOF as an Astro.

No he won't. He'll go in as a Tiger.

mostly because of the Tigers mis-management over the years.

He went to two WS with us. Most players don't get to any. He was treated well, even traded him to the team he wanted to go to even though they had no obligation.

I didn't mean how they treated him but how they mis-managed the team over the past 15-20 years.

He is who he is b because he played most of his years with Detroit. Good and bad.

this is true, and you are probably right. After his career is over, he will have more years with the Tigers than with the Astros. Right now it's 13 in Detroit compared to 5 with the Astros. He is all but assured to play next year. I just think it would be funny if he went in as an Astro.

TOO MUCH A GOOD THING?
Totally Tigers

Ken Rosenthal continues to write excellent pieces. He was the first to nationally blow up Al Avila and how he killed the Tigers? rebuild. Last year, he earned the wrath of Commissioner Rob Manfred simply by reporting on Manfred?s moves.

This week, a thoughtful piece on Justin Verlander. One showing how he?s matured since leaving the Tigers and joining the Astros. In part, brought on by marriage, having a child and experiencing the grueling journey from injury to recovery.

JV said he?s learned to become a better teammate. To be engaged, ?more accessible,? and more one of the guys.?

Rosenthal reports that Verlander is more involved in the clubhouse and mixing more with teammates. That he?s ?a totally different guy.?

?He?s more open to helping young guys, helping the team, having team dinners, constant communication.?

Ken goes on to explain how certain players, especially top players, are self-absorbed. How they have a single-minded focus on themselves which allows them to become elite players.

Which now, after reading this, brings me back to a thought I had back in the mid 2010?s when the Tigers had MLB?s best collection of stars and were regularly playing October baseball.

Did the Tigers have too many stars? Too many egos? Too many self-centered players?

Is this the biggest reason why they could never come close to winning more than a single game in the World Series?

This team, for a number of years, contained 3 first ballot Hall of Famers. Add in a couple more who will eventually make it to Cooperstown.

They also had 5, count ?em, 5 pitchers who would win Cy Young Awards. Some of them more than once. They also had a rotation that many experts said was baseball?s best one in history.

All ended up getting rings, just not with Detroit....

good article. She forgot to mention Miggy. He was the biggest star they had and he was the same way. He has also changed since then, and now he has pretty much the same traits as JV when it comes to being a teammate. My guess is it has more to do with maturing with age and knowing that your days of playing the game they love are numbered.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Justin Verlander is having one of the best years of his career after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020. He is leading MLB pitching stats in most categories and expected to be in the running for yet another Cy Young Award. He is currently 16-3 with a 1.84 ERA and .855 WHIP.

Verlander is being paid $25 mill this year and has a player option for another $25 mill for 2023. His value this year (for a full season) is actually worth $44.8 mill. This despite now going on the 10-day IL for a minor calf injury.

JV is considering opting out of his contract with the Astros considering how much value he brings to the team. He will probably command somewhere in the mid-30?s to low 40?s per year. Verlander will be 40 next season and expected to seek a shorter contract given his age.

Should the Tigers bring him back, especially since they now have Chris Fetter in charge of pitching?

Could he be a mentor for the young pitching staff?

Should the Tigers bring him back in an effort to undo Al Avila?s trade that was named the worst one ever completed by a team?

Or is JV simply too old and no longer fits on a rebuilding team? Is it too much money to offer when there are so many holes and needs on this roster?

Last night, JV pitched 5 innings no-hit ball. 1BB and 9 SO. He's 17-3 with a 1.78 ERA.

At 39 years old, Justin Verlander is the oldest pitcher in the last 100 years with 25 strikeouts and zero runs allowed in a three-game span.

The only other pitchers to do this at 35 years or older were R.A. Dickey in 2012, Roger Clemens in 1998 and Nolan Ryan in 1984.

October 4, 2022:
Justin Verlander 16 batters faced..
zero hits..
one walk
10 SO..

Justin Verlander finishes the season with the 2nd lowest ERA (1.75) in the Wild Card Era behind only Pedro Martinez (1.74).

Oldest pitchers in the history of MLB to finish a season with an ERA under 1.80
Cy Young (41yrs old) - 1908

It looks like "playoff JV" showed up in game one of the divisional series.

4 IP, 10 hits, 6 ER

In 14 ALDS appearances his ERA is 3.08 and that includes the game he just pitched.
In 11 ALCS appearances his ERA is 3.13.

Its the WS where he's been bad.
