What should the Tigers do?

Throw in all of the trade chips and land a big name like we did with Cabrera

can i vote for sign cespedes AND make a minor signing like pena? i still want young off the team.

What should we do? Should we quit? What should we do? Should I tell you how much fun we had? What should we do? Should I have my VMart tattoo removed? What should we do?

But seriously I really don't believe that VMart can be easily or readily replaced by just one player who will bat as DH, My guess is that it will take a MINIMUM of two near All-Star worthy players to possibly come close enough to fill Victor's big bat & spikes. He was one of the best players (offensively) in ALL of MLB last season...sigh.

Victor is reportedly one of the team leaders, so someone will need to step up there as well. With Guillen gone and Victor out, team leadership will be in question.

Replacing Victor's .850 OPS at DH shouldn't be that hard. Maybe Vlad could squeeze one more good year out for 7 million.

I agree with the guy above. We aren't getting a Miguel type but screw Turner and Castellanos, who will be a LF anyway, and go get a young stud. Trade them all.

Johnny Damon or J.D. Drew would do nicely, or even Casey Kotchman. There is no sense going overboard.

We have yet to resolve 2B or 3B long term. With Martinez out, the only true left handed hitters are Avila and Boesch. There isn't a lot of hitters on this team that will elevate an opposing starter's pitch count.

Then, there is the issue of #1 and #2 in the order. When has this been addressed? Not to mention that this team is filled with defensive liabilities.

Prince Fielder, Yoenis Cespedes, Josh Hamilton, etc, etc would do nothing more than divert resources away from what this team really needs.

Chase Headley, Ben Zobrist and Nick Markakis are more in line with resolving long term questions. I mean, Delmon Young is only signed for 1 more year. If he sucks like most of us opine, then we would be looking for a corner OFer in 2013. BTW...I am not sold on Cespedes. Granted, he could be the real deal. But, I see it as signing a unproven prospect, for huge money. And I see Hamilton as injury prone. And we all know Fielder's weight issues.

We do not necessarily need another star on this team, especially at any perceived cost (salary, etc). Our pitching is certainly better than a year ago. Just because Martinez is out for the year, should not have changed this focus.

Sign Fielder, Put him at DH, or some at 1b, maybe give Cabrera a look see at 3b during spring training.

I think Cespedes is a separate issue. I think we're after him regardless of the VMart injury. If we get him, we can use DY as DH or trade him away.

I like the idea of trading Turner and/or Castellanos for a guy like David Wright or Hanley Ramirez. It'd be a huge upgrade at a position of need whether you plugged them in at 3B or put Hanley at SS and moved Peralta to 2B or 3B. When Martinez comes back, his DH spot is open and we're that much better.

DD didn't say much in his phone conference yesterday, but he said enough to completely shoot this down. He said Miggy is staying put at 1B and they don't have the budget to sign another $20mil+ player.

oh ok, just a thought.

Maybe, probably a smaller type move signing. Damon, would be underwhelming for reasons of age, with Tigers 2 years earlier, Drew imo has always been a mercernary and always injured hence the monikor "DL Drew", Kotchman is interesting.
I agree about 2nd and 3rd, and also the top two spots in the batting order. Tigers should have done more trying to get Headley and Zobrist. Always liked Markakis but past year or two chasing Out of zone, Iso power dropped, iirc his fielding UZR took a small drop too. Maybe has to do with playing hurt and now had or having abdominal surgery.
All I know is, I thought the Tigers were kind of middle of pack of the 6 or 7 teams that are elite in offense and pitching before Martinez's injury, something(s) need to be done.

This is devastating to the Tigers chances. I think Martinez's role is being understated, he was the heart of that team and the only real protection for Cabrerra that we could count on. I do not expect Perralta and Avila to repeat their career years in 2012. They'll be solid, but wont be viable options to protect Cabrerra, so we're going to rely on Young to hit behind Cabby?

This is a disaster, no bones about it. If this team wants to win now, and I think they're built for that, they need to make a bold move.

I think they have a number of options, but which one is the best DD and his scouts have to determine that. Personally I would like to see them check on Carlos Lee or Bobby Abreau, they would both work for 1 yr. They have to determine how much risk they want to take with Cespedes, but I would think he would need part or all of this year in the minors, just like Chapman did, but he could still be a solution for the future in the OF, I just don't think you can say sign Cespedes and move DY to DH this year, because I don't think you can just plug Cespedes in the starting line-up right away, I think he needs some seasoning to get used to the majors. I would've loved to sign Saunders for 2 yrs and traded our 3b prospect and maybe Oliver and Smyl and Inge for David Wright.

I would like to see us get a guy like David Wright who is coming off a poor year and batting in a lineup with no protection...Would be a nice bat to add to our lineup and once V-Mart gets back the lineup would be even stronger! His contract is up there though and only has an option for 2013 so we would have to get him signed for more years. Not sure what we would have to give up though. Surely it would be less than what it would have taken to land him a year ago!

I may be wrong, but with the team losing VMart for next season, the Tigers may instead decide that they cannot afford to gamble on a very questionable, potentially expensive and obviously a possible long-term luxury move by acquiring an OFer who might even need to spend at least part of next season in the minors, of course being Yoennis Cespedes, that is, unless they plan on taking a "mulligan" for next season, and instead, or if necessary, go out and get 'em in '13?

I don't understand how the sign Cespedes (big IF) and move Delmon to DH solves anything, yet it has the most votes. ::)

Delmon sucks, and making him DH won't help much, and we don't know that Cespedes will even hit his body weight in MLB.

How can that option be viewed as any kind of a solution?

Tigers have to make a TRADE, nobody left as a FA is going to make enough impact to offset losing VMart, let alone improve us from last season.

VMart is a huge part of this team. Bats well, protection behind Miguel. his two strike approach and the fact he's huge after a Miguel walk. Get Damon or any of those other bums help little. So now we're weak at 2B, 3B, LF and DH. Who cares about the division, this team and the offense won't get a WS. Expect Miguel to have his highest walk total to date.
