What should the Tigers do?

I don't understand how the sign Cespedes (big IF) and move Delmon to DH solves anything, yet it has the most votes. ::)

Delmon sucks, and making him DH won't help much, and we don't know that Cespedes will even hit his body weight in MLB.

How can that option be viewed as any kind of a solution?

Tigers have to make a TRADE, nobody left as a FA is going to make enough impact to offset losing VMart, let alone improve us from last season.

I agree with this and i cannot believe Cespedes has 6 votes.. Getting him is such a huge risk... DD needs to make a splash and got get a bat and maybe trade for garza too while he is at it...

Like someone else said, I think Cespedes is going to be a Tiger anyway unless the Marlins go crazy on the offer. That automatically moves Young to DH anyway. Now, that doesn't solve the problem unless Boesch and Avila make another jump into .310 range and together hit behind Cabrera as protection.

Short of going big (trade for someone like David Wright), we are just going to need to hope the Cuban sensation isn't all hype. We are going to have to rely on our pitching and weak division to get through this level of loss.

If they can sign the centipede, they could make DY 2.0 the DH. They could go for Vlad as well to fill the V-Mart void.....then again, Don kelly is available!

Just because DY stinks in the field doesn't make him a good option at DH. He'd be terrible there. Doesn't have a good enough at bat. We need a slugger or a replicate of VMart.

How does it automatically move Young to DH if we sign Cespedes?

If we had done so and VMart had not got hurt DY would not be our DH, Delmon can be a backup, or GTFO the team, prefferably the latter.

We need a DH, and the scary thing is we might end up with Guillen or Maggs on a 1 year contract at DH.

I know that baseball salaries are guaranteed but does anybody know if the team insures the players?

The ALCD may be just weak enough, that the Tigers could conceivably remain in contention long enough, to permit Manny Ramirez to serve out his suspension, then afterward, join the team. I tend to believe that he means what he says about wanting to put his recent troubles behind him.

An energized, motivated and incentive-ized Ramirez on a partial-season deal could potentially give the Tigers a huge boost, IF he still has the physical ability to mash, and while no longer on whatever PED he got nailed for, and if he can still "mentor" and provide a halfway-decent amount of leadership by example @ the plate, in the dugout and in the Tigers' clubhouse, like he claims that he can, it might help to replace some of what will be lost with VMart's absence.

Out of the rest of his elder peers who are past prime, and amongst those who may be available, Damon, Matsui, Ordonez, Guillen, Guerrero, Pena, Young, Ramirez may be the one most likely to be able to still rake and do so more or less consistently.

Although I am a bit curious to know if having both of the Young brothers playing together on the same team, would have a beneficial effect or not?

Why would we take a risk on a 2 time LOSER like Manny, plus, have to let him sit out a suspension he earned with another team while were paying him for a full season, in the hoped that he can contribute once he can play again.

And Manny being Manny does not have a single grain of leadership ability, Manny is the anti-VMart.

This team had holes that were covered by career years from other players, so losing our second best hitter really forces our hand to go grab a big name hitter.

Every one of those players that I posted are also a "risk", some being even moreso than others, and I still think that Ramirez offers the most potential bang for the bucks that it would cost the Tigers to sign him. I really don't care what the Rays might have lost, when considering how much the Tigers have been screwed ever since '06 by a half-dozen or so ex-Tigers, especially Sheffield, Robertson, and Willis...although I really don't know if the Rays were still on the hook for the remainder of Manny's salary, after he decided to retire rather than serve out his suspension.

Why would the Tigers pay him while or for the time and games he misses as he serves out his suspension anyway? They would obviously negotiate for likely an incentive-laden contract for a partial season only.

I believe his suspension only starts to count down once he is on a MLB active roster, and since you have to pay players on the roster, why would we not have to pay him while he is suspended?

Any way you slice it, Manny is not going to help us for a full season so why bother, just in case we need him?

Better off trading for someone who can play from day 1.

It's a 50 GAME suspension and it doesn't begin until someone signs him

I have always liked Bobby Abreu but he is getting up there to in age..

79 wins and 2nd place. Thanks DD. You got us some quality depth for us.

Even without V-Mart this team will be above .500 The Tigers will add another player and if they are close to first they will make a move before the trade deadline. I still think they have the starting rotation in the Central. Even with the team they have right now I think they are the front runners for the central.
