Who do you want to see the Tigers acquire

Don't be a dumb shit. I'm sure you thought they wouldn't have more than 2 20m guys and then bam, Fielder. You all make it sound like you know for sure what MI will do.

No team in baseball, not even the Yankees have 4 $20M players.

The idea that we could sign Hamilton from the savings of the next 3 highest paid players leaving [Valverde, Sanchez, Young] is still silly, because we have about 5 players who are going to get raises from arbitration, plus we have to fill holes on the FA market, plus pay Victor full salary next season [insurance picked up the majority this season].

Nobody knows what Ilitch will do, but it's safe to say he's not going after who is likely to become top 3 highest paid in baseball this offseason, after giving Prince that monster deal.

I'm also sure Ilitch wants no part of Verlander or Cabrera leaving, he's a loyal guy who likes to keep his stars, and he's not going to risk losing either.

I get that. And of course but no one knows outside MI and he could always change his mind. And when someone says no way, not a chance etc. Well nothing is ever 100% chance. That's the point I was trying to make.

Of course there is no hard cap...but there is a ceiling that management isn't willing to go over. If there wasn't the Tigers would currently have $20 million players at every position...wouldn't they? This isn't fantasy baseball.....they are also trying to run a business.

You are completely missing the point here. This team can cut ties with the overpaid, under producing vets I mentioned, backfill with young, cheap in-house guys, sign Hamilton, and keep the payroll nearly the same in the process. It could have larger consequences down the line, but we've got an old owner who wants a ring, has a boatload of cash he's shown he'll spend, and we've got our key stars locked up for a few more years. This is our window to go for it, and I think Mr. I will do just that. It doesn't matter what you or I want to speculate about a budget or talk about how no team has ever done this scenario or that one before. Not a damn one of us ever thought we'd see Fielder here, let alone on a huge longterm deal like he got.

Hamilton is a stud, but I don't see him getting a Fielder/Pujols type mega deal with his injury and drug issues. I just don't see anybody locking him up long term like that. I'm thinking 4-5yrs with vesting options might be his limit, and I think some teams will definitely shy away. Especially larger market teams where there are more off the field distractions.

I'll pass on Hamilton, nothing but trouble, goes off on coaches on field. injury prone, K's alot slumps often when he's not lights out. Libel to get someone killed chucken that bat into the crowd all the time. can't afford all these high priced salaries, you sign him and they'll have to let Jackson go when he's up for FA. I don't see the up side in all that.

I want to see them acquire a couple more good eye plate disciplined bats and ditch the free swingers.

You have to understand were already adding an All-star type hitter to our lineup next season when Vmart comes back which will make our lineup 10 times better when you slot in Vmart for Young.

He provides adequate protection for Prince at least better then he has seen this year and a serious RBI threat as well when Miggy/Prince are on base ahead of him which is something we have lacked greatly this year ranking dead last in RBI's produced from the 5 slot in our lineup which in turn last year we ranked 1st in that category.

With the addition of Infante for next season to play 2B the DH/5 Hole in our lineup is now just as important a hole to fill as any and thankfully it won't have to be something we have to acquire in a trade or sign a FA its something we already have on our roster.

Looking at the FA SS that are available it looks like the only way to upgrade there would be via a trade. I bet the Tigers exercise the $6M club option.

You can't just look at FA SS, because Infante can play SS too, so picking up a FA 2B is just as good.

* – player whose current contract includes 2013 option

Second Basemen
Jeff Baker
Orlando Hudson *
Jeff Keppinger
Freddy Sanchez
Skip Schumaker

Shortstops
Jason Bartlett *
Geoff Blum
Stephen Drew *
Jhonny Peralta *
Luis Rodriguez
Ryan Theriot

Nobody looks intriguing to me. I think that a trade would be necessary to upgrade SS position.

Incomplete list.

Kelly Johnson is a free agent after signing for 1 year with the Jays.

In all likelihood they pick up Peralta's option.

With V-Mart coming back at DH, all they need to do is pickup a league average corner OFer and they'll have a 95 win team.

I'm thinking that's the case too. Which outfielder do you think the Tigers should pick up? It sure would have been nice to have Willingham over Delmon.

To be fair, many people thought that about 2012 also.

I agree they will probably pick Jhonnys option up, but this thread is about what you want them to do, not necessarily what they will.

I personally would like to see improved range up the middle.

Prince provides maybe a 2 win upgrade over V-Mart.

So really, only a win or 2 better than what we were in 2011 is what should have been expected.

Really, they were more like a 90 win team, people were predicting 95 because they were a 85-90 win team that overperformed the year before.

Exactly and what can we expect to see next year with the upgrade of Vmart over Young?

Well, assuming he can still put up an .800 OPS probably a 2-3 win upgrade over Young.

And a full season of Infante would be at least another win over what our 2B will provide this year.

No big move will be needed to be made in order for us to be a WS favorite, just add a solid corner OFer and a bullpen arm and we'll be there.

It's not hard to improve on two black holes (Boesch and Young) in your lineup, and improving just those two spots will improve the team considerably.

Do that, and we'll be on the same level as Texas.

Chase Headley...can play LF or 3B. Under team control until 2015. Not sure DET has enough to use as trade, as the wasted Turner on Sanchez and Infante.
