Yoenis Cespedes - Cuban CF

So much for DD's repeatedy claiming that Detroit and the Tigers club being only able to afford to support TWO positions @ 20MM per annum. But I have to think that Cespedes' chances of becoming a Tiger took a huge hit today.

Acquiring Prince doesn't solve ALL of the Tigers' problems on the field (and may create some that were not there before) or in their lineup (yeah I am looking @ YOU, Austin) but it sure is gonna be a "chicks digging the longball" summers @ CoPa for sometime to come.

He established residency. I don't think we will pursue him, or at least pursue him as hard as we may have before today, but it will be interesting to see where he signs.

I think in all honesty DD's belief was just that in that he thought the Tigers could only compete with two 20million per players on the team at least with a payroll around 115 but when the man upstairs "which is being reported was someone he wanted badly" says "get this guy no matter" and in doing so jumps the payroll to the 135 range then yeah adding one more wasn't a problem at least for now.

I'm guessing we pass too. Miami said they intended to outbid the Tigers on him, so he probably isn't going cheap. Right now, we'd be better off signing a 5th starter or trading for a middle of the rotation lefty and sliding Max and/or Richard back to 4-5. Also, I'd be on board a trade for a good defensive 2B and/or a speedy and defensive minded LF (maybe Cespedes is still that guy if the price is right).

We're clearly going all in, but I think trades and strategic FA signings are the more likely path. If we make a splash, it's probably gonna be with Turner/Castellanos getting moved for an impact 2B/LF/LHP. Just my two cents though.

I assume this was after Prince signed, eh, or maybe before but they said Detroit was 10th in payroll. Lot of teams spending money.

Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports that Cespedes has told teams he would prefer not to play in Miami.

Sign him up, trade away Young, Turner and Castellanos for a legit LHP or 2B and call it a day.

There is still rumblings that the Tigers remain very interested in Cespedes even AFTER the Prince signing. Man talk about adding to an already stacked lineup lol.

Except we don't know if he'll be good or not. So basically it's all right with me ;-)

Yeah I believe a figure I seen today has us now at 5th highest payroll in baseball after the Fielder signing.

Yoenis Cespedes' agent Adam Katz told Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com on Monday that he expects the Cuban outfielder to be in spring training with an MLB team.
Cespedes officially hit free agency last week and Katz says the market for the 26-year-old is "meaningful and aggressive." The Marlins, Cubs, White Sox, Orioles, Tigers, and Indians appear to be the most interested, but the Nationals, Yankees, Phillies and Blue Jays have also been linked. Cespedes is expected to sign a contract north of the $30.25 million deal Aroldis Chapman signed with the Reds in January of 2010.
from rotoworld

The Marlins, Cubs, White Sox, Orioles, and Tigers are five of the six clubs that have been in serious talks with Cespedes, reports ESPN's Jim Bowden. He is expected to travel to the United States in the next 7-10 days for face-to-face meetings.
Baseball America's Jim Callis said he would rank Cespedes in the 7-15 range of their top 100 prospects list, and that he would take over as the top prospect of pretty much any team that signs him.

lol no. I think at this point we need to keep our prospects for the future. Our farm system is already bare. We can win the world series with this team, we need to secure our future too. Id hate to see the team take a tumble similar to the pistons.

Mike is worth 2+ billion.. He should sign everyone we want him to sign.. Well I mean me.. :)

Disagree. When you are close to a championship, you bolster your roster to make the odds better. That means shoring up 2B/LF/LHP. I could care less what prospects might do 2-3yrs from now. I want a WS. Sell the farm and get us there. New prospects come along every year, and once you win a WS you can start trading away vets to new competing teams. This model has been used successfully time and time again in every major sport.
