Yoenis Cespedes - Cuban CF

If anything, the Fielder signing signals to me that Illitch is going all in for a championship while he is still healthy enough to be in charge. Cespedes' salary would be a hiccup compared to Fielder. It all depends on what the scouts/team think he'll be. If he can play a strong defensive outfield while also hitting near .300, there's no reason Illitch wouldn't sign off. If his hitting is more a product of previous competition than big league ability, or if he's another one-dimensional hitter, we probably pass.

At this point, we don't need a guy who has to DH to be useful, we have 2 DH candidates everyday depending on how we play Miggy and Fielder, and another elite DH coming back next year. Further, we don't need an inconsistent power hitter who can't chase down balls in the outfield when we already have Young. Cespedes needs to be a real two-way player if we are going to bank on him being important to a championship in the next 3-5 years.

If DD pulls something off with Cespedes, too...wow. That's Brian Cashman-esque right there. Spend spend spend. For once WE'D be the ones fans of other teams will look at roster-wise and say "I hate you."

Not that the Tigers team can't be "hated" even more, but I think that our ALCD rivals' fanbases have certainly begun to, if not already have ratcheted up their collective hating on the Tigers, especially due to what has already transpired of late. No doubt Royals fans had some very good reasons to become more excited with their young team's growing potential to not only compete, but contend in the division, given what has happened to the Twins and White Sox, only to see their hopes and dreams very likely being crushed to a pulp by the Tigers, at least for the short term.

Those AL Central teams can't have it both ways. Lots of years of complete sucktitude by Tigers and front office. Now our team has a good to great product on par with the teams and the assholes that use their media pulpits to put down anything our Tigers do. screw all of them.

Anybody else expect the Indians and Royals to start scrapping the rebuilding plans when attendance falls to even more dismal levels? The Tigers now have several superstars entering their prime and locked up long-term. I don't see the Indians and Royals fans tolerating the perpetual "rebuilding" because they realistically aren't gonna compete any time soon given the Tigers unique blend of young superstars.

Never mentioned this before KC...but I always have gotten a kick out of your starting the Tigers' seasonal gameday threads by lower-casing the opposing team's names and their players lineups names, if not "munging" many of them up as well...lol.

Hahahaha, Yes Doug, glad you have noticed and enjoyed it. I will rarely, if ever, give an opposing teams name or player name the honor/respect of a capital letter. justin "moron"eau, "singles' mauer, "scowlface" beltre, "captain snatchface" vagitek, yuckilus, "hotdog" santana, cruddyer and porkykubel no longer twins, same for liverlips ozzie guillen also gone.
Watching games when with my buds, usually on wednesday cigar nights, they wince/cringe with my nicknames of redsux players.

The Tribe's brass essentially traded away or shut-closed their window of postseason opportunity after their '07 postseason when they let Lee and CC leave. The Royals just never have been a bigtime player in trades or FA, so its all on them. The Twins have been largely victimized by injury to their stars of late, and they also traded Santana away, but looks now like it was a very prudent move. The White Sox core aged fast after their '05 championship season, and they have had some bad luck/bad FO decisions in extended players contracts, trades, and FA, but then, so have the Tigers.

Cespedes declared a free agent
Yoenis Cespedes is now a free agent.

On Wednesday, Major League Baseball sent out a notice to the clubs advising them that Cespedes, as a resident of the Dominican Republic, is not subjected to the Amateur Draft and may now sign as a free agent.

On Tuesday, the outfield prospect established residency in the Dominican Republic.

Cespedes, who just finished a stint with Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Winter League, recently said the Marlins, Cubs, White Sox, Orioles, Tigers, and Indians have expressed the most interest in signing him. He is expected to command a contract greater than the one received by Cuban left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman, who signed a six-year, $30.25 million deal with the Reds in January 2010.

The Marlins are on record saying they believe Cespedes' best fit is in Miami, with its strong Cuban community. The club is prepared to make a substantial offer -- between four and six years -- for the power-hitting outfielder.

Reports that he is not interested in signing with the Marlins are not true, an industry source said.

Cespedes hit .333 with 33 home runs, 99 RBIs and 11 stolen bases over 90 games in Cuba during the 2010-11 season, and many believe he can be inserted into the 2012 Opening Day starting lineup for the team that signs him.

He hit .143 with one home run and 10 strikeouts in 35 at-bats for the Aguilas.

If so, then I would guess that the Marlins will probably be very determined to top all offers for Yoennis, as he represents potentially millions of dollars in additional ticket sales to the club and likely higher merchandising output to MLB as well, rather than if he was to sign with any other franchise. But, he obviously has to quickly produce and prove his werth..err..I mean worth, regardless of where he winds up. I still wonder how many Tigers fans there were in '08, who purchased Willis' uni when it first became available, and ended up regretting it..haha!!
