New Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen calls Yoenis Cespedes "pretty impressive," but he said it's no slam dunk that the Cuban defector ends up in Miami.

Marlins president David Samson has already said that they would like the outfielder but don't have to have him, and Guillen reiterated that.

"I heard Mr. Samson say something very interesting yesterday," Guillen said on the "Waddle and Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000 in Chicago. "He said, 'We have a great ballclub. And we're happy with what we have.'"

Waddle & Silvy

Ex-White Sox player and manager Ozzie Guillen joins Waddle & Silvy for Lunch with a Legend, where he discusses his time in Chicago, Carlos Zambrano, his new job in Miami and much more.

Yea, I'm better he turn them down.

He's looking for close to $10M a year.

"Whoever signs him is gambling"

Yeah Ozzie, as after all, you very fortunately no longer have to deal with the 4 year 56M ongoing fail that was and could very well still be Adam Dunn, now that you have escaped chilly, windy, gloomy SS Chicago for <s>Florida</s> sunkist ocean shores of Miami, w/o skipping a beat...err...baseball season, no sense in having to undergo a potentially similar scenario with Cespedes as an overpaid/hyped Marlin, and certainly not in your very first season in their brand-spanking new (climate-controlled) ballpark as the renamed/renewed/rejuvenated NL club's skipper, huh?

Marlins make offer to Cespedes.
from mlbtraderumors

roughly $40MM over six years.
I saw they are now saying the offer was less than $40mil.

That's right...from a couple of sources along with this from rotoworld;
According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Marlins' offer to Yoenis Cespedes was worth less than $40 million.
A source told Eric Reynoso of Cafe Fuerte on Saturday that the Marlins made an offer this week of "around $40 million." And now we can guess that it was probably in the 30s. Cespedes returned to the Dominican Republic on Thursday night after meeting only with the Fish. The Cubs, White Sox, Orioles and Tigers are thought to be interested in the 26-year-old Cuban outfielder as well.

I guess he's not getting the 10m per or 100m many thought he could get. Whether you believe at looking at his stats the past month, 5-35, or not it probably effects some teams opinions on whether he's worth it.

I would have no problem if they went after him, except what the cost will be.

He won't sign for under $10M per, I think the first offer was just the Marlins testing how badly he wants to sign for big money, so they tossed $5m per or so at him.

I won't be surprised to see the Marlins offer him $10M/5 years soon.

Even young kids who are sure things don't get 10m bonus when they sign. I just don't see it, so many risks. Looks like the Marlins want him but 10m still seems a bit much.

I agree, he's not worth it.

But DiceK and Irabu were not worth what they cost either, someone is going to pay the kid, if not $10M it will be in that ballpark, which is why I hope we pass on him.

I think teams have learned? Maybe, lol. But being 26, he needs to hit right away.

And the only reason they don't is because they are negotiating with one team.

If Mike Trout or Byrce Harper were FA's right now, they would be getting that much.

Sure but does he have to visit a team before he gets an offer? I thought they'd be rolling in by now, especially with the season about to start.

What is it, a month before position players report?

He's got time, and I'm sure it'll pick up once he's actually able to sign a contract.
