Yoenis Cespedes - Cuban CF

[quote="MI_Thumb":6wy6jtqb]I agree, he's not worth it.

But DiceK and Irabu were not worth what they cost either, someone is going to pay the kid, if not $10M it will be in that ballpark, which is why I hope we pass on him.

I think teams have learned? Maybe, lol. But being 26, he needs to hit right away. [/quote:6wy6jtqb]

26=32 in cuban years

It doesn't even come close to that in dominican years.

I've wondered if he's so damn good, why did he wait until he was 26? Why not defect at a younger age like Chapman did?

he probably didnt have the opportunity. its not like you can just leave cuba whenever you want.

I think Oakland is trying to give their money away to some degree. I know they are notoriously cheap, but I've seen them mentioned for a lot of retreads like Manny, Matsui, Damon, Maggs, etc. I think they realize they gotta make some attempt to draw butts into the seats.

I'm hoping Cespedes is a dud in MLB.

hes not gonna be an offensive star playing in oakland (or that division), thats for sure.

Lmao. Let him squander in 3rd place. No way is a CF who has never played pro ball is going to help them get in the playoffs for some time.

Because we missed out on him.

Well so much for Cespedes. Much like the rest of you, I was surprised the team was oakland. Heard it driving home on XM. 4 years at 9M = 36 and he will be a FA at age 30.
Oakland has traded off several pitchers this offseason, and seems to have cornered a market of several average type outfielders.

Really strange it being Oakland, maybe Cespedes just caught Moneyball and though he would be in the same dugout as Brad Pitt. Especially odd they would be giving out such a sizable contract to such an unproven player. They could have easily kept their pitching talent with that kind of money.

Some have asked "why Oakland?" and it's a fair question. My take is that Oakland, still in negotiations with MLB to go further south in the Bay area, will get a bigger demand from the techies and others with big $$$ once they see how this guy and the A's are playing. Hopefully, much better, they think. Big gamble? You betcha. But I wouldn't necessarily bet against Billy Beane.

He went to Oakland because they were the ones who ponied up on the near $10M per, the Fish or the Tigers or the Cubs or anyone else could have had him if they just met his price, which was too steep IMO for an untested 26 year old.

True, but the answer "why Oakland?" when they hadn't even been in the mix is pure money-ball. The Bay area upped the ante simply b/c they believe that a new park in a new area with a solid, winning team led by a Hispanic super-hero would bring in the big bucks. As I said earlier, it's a gamble & one I'm glad DD wouldn't take. Players look far different in different circumstances. JoeD could probably tell you all about how a certain Slav named Darko looked like the next big thing...

It was because Oakland offered a 4 year deal allowing him to be a FA sooner.
