2015 Cap

How often does a player of his caliber hit free agency and sign a long term deal with current team? Mayhew couldn't get anything done in the last year what makes you think he can now..

Talking franchise. Not hitting free agency. Lots of franchised players re-sign with team.

Show me someone who signed a tag at 27m and resigns with team or even close to 27m, a DT?

You think he's going to sign a 13-14m per after a 27m tag? It's all his leverage, he'll wait until the year is over and sign the biggest deal he can find.

I always thought the franchise tag was the average salary of the top 5 players at that particular position, no?

Players always prefer long term offers. Injuries can happen and he's getting closer to 30 as it is.

For a year. Then he bolts and we're a year behind getting better because we signed a DT for 27m.

This doesn't stop us from taking a DT or trading him. He'll sign 16 million per which is his new market value being a premier defensive player. Lions can easily handle that.

Interior pressure>DE pressure. Run defense is off the charts.

Or 10% greater than what he made the season before whatever is greater. Mayhew screwed the pooch on this one..

No, the Lions can't handle it. You and Mayhew are the only ones who thinks its fine.

I'm fine with McCoy money, plus a little. Watt money would not even be so bad, as long as they don't start pushing it down the road in the future to get us into a bad cap situation again.

EDIT -- Never mind...McCoy and Watt are basically the same in guaranteed money. Just as long as they stay in the Watt-McCoy ballpark, pay the man.

They can easily. 18 million under. Can cut Tulloch, Jones, Bush for 8 million. Restructure Stafford for 5.6 million (then give him a new deal next year to make his base low again). Tons of room.

I would love to have Suh back because he's a special player and we don't get to enjoy many of those as Lions fans.

However, I do not want him back on a franchise tag. Financial suicide.

And I don't want him back because he cried. Jesus... grow a pair dude. Plenty of guys have moved on without winning a title, if they all cried, the NFL would be officially sponsored by Kleenex and Tampax.

No matter what, if he leaves, it's going to hurt our D for a while. Our secondary is not good, and they played very well because the D-Line was taking time off the QBs internal clock. You just can't replace what Suh and Fairley and Mosley bring to the team easily, or everyone would be what the defense was last year.

But, I don't get a vote in it. If Mayhew franchises him, the man is insane, but I won't say worse than Millen. I am not sure anything could ever be worse than Millen. It would take an entire busload of fertadas on crack to be as bad as Mil.... ah ah ah.. almost said it a third time, which I am fairly certain summons some unspeakable evil.

'Bout put a hex on the whole damned thing right there.

He counts 10 million plus whatever the franchise tag is due to bonuses and restructuring, that 10 mil counts whether he's here or not.

This one is all on Mayhew, I think the lions have a better chance to win with Suh next year rather than without him and 10 mil in dead money. Obviously resigning is the best choice in 2015 cap wise, but it's a really tricky situation.... Franchise him and keep the team as is, or let him go, sign other pieces and roll with that. Franchising Suh basically delays any big FA signings until 2016.

My only hope is that if Austin leaves they don't panic and franchise Suh for fear of a big decline in defense with both gone.

9 million dead already counts with 18 million under even with that dead money. 18 under if suh walks.

There is room to not only franchise suh, keep the cheap guys which is all our other free agents that are cheap and won't count extra since we have 53 under contract Mathis, Mosley, George Johnson etc due to vet min deduction and top 51 rule but also make a tate type move.

Cutting tulloch, bush, and jones (8 million) and restructuring stafford is a no brainer

Heck that one move could be fairley back

Suh gets a long term deal. We have room for a couple more moves. A suh deal could happen at any time
