Annual premature mock draft

another dlineman over our biggest need on this team the secondary? go with Denarrd, gilbert.

I'd agree for the most part. I'd much prefer taking Marqise Lee (assuming Watkins is gone) or Gilbert or Dennard than take a D-lineman unless he's a stud pass rusher. But I don't think there are any stud pass rushers falling to us at #10. Clowney will be gone and even if Barr somehow makes it to us, I don't know if I want him. I just don't think he'd be an ideal 4-3 end.

over marquise lee? are you changing your tune? is it moreso cause of the dlineman that will be on the board still or how deep the WR class will be. To be honest I don't think there would be much of a production difference if we grabbed a WR in rd 1 or rd 3 this draft (unless Watkins miraculously falls to us).

It's really tough, I think when everything shakes out a lot of those dlineman move up the board. Mayhew gets lauded for his BPA strategy by some on here...I think at ten BPA is going to be a rising dlineman or one of Barr or Clowney or Mack falling. Who knows what defense we'll be running.

Hughes with some of the names you and I have thrown out there we know wr is really deep. I think Watkins is the best and it's not even close, but it think he's gone. Lee is second best but is a stellar talent and has every chance to be a great wr 2 especially in this offense. I like the talent of the top two corners but all things equal there is more talent at other position.

Alex pure need maybe cb maybe not, we have a half dozen young guys on the roster that may turn out. Slay was drafted as a future 1. Houston is still here as a 2. Bentley as a nickel. Green and Greenwood are wild cards. DE on the other hand we have Ansah and who? Young might not be back, and overpaid vet in Jason Jones with one Achilles? Not my cup of tea. The who. You could argue DE is the biggest need.

Funny that the top of the article states that Watkins has broke into the top five and he's listed as the 6th best player on the board.

I thought that was pretty funny when I read that too. I had to double check to make sure I wasn't just reading it wrong.

Barr is Jason Taylor in two or three years. We aren't winning the Super Bowl next year so let him develop into one.

The Lions definitely need to sign another DE in the offseason, but I don't think it's as dire as you make it out to be. It's definitely a need, but I like Devin Taylor and think he'll turn out to be a solid player. With him, Ansah, and Jones, we'll need another guy. Whether we acquire that guy through the draft or free agency, I don't know. I just think we could acquire a solid WR in Marqise Lee or a solid corner with Dennard or Gilbert and I think at this point they're all talented and they fill a definite need. Maybe look at drafting a DE somewhere in rounds 2-5. Last year we took Devin Taylor in round 4.

I'm curious where you got that comparison. Did you read it somewhere? Jason Taylor was 6'6" and Barr is 6'4". They are about the same weight, but 2 inches can make a big difference. I'm not saying Barr is going to be bad (he'll probably be a nice player), but like Hughes said earlier, he doesn't seem the 4-3 DE type.

Gilbert or Dennard you get DJ Hayden or Dee Milliner. If Devin Taylor is a full time starter we are in trouble.

Uses his length to his advantage, fast and relentless. Former fullback to possibly the top pass rusher in the draft, athleticism is off the charts. The guy trends way up. These type of guys tend to be safe picks. Wrs and cbs tend to be the opposite of safe.

I agree about his athleticism. And after watching some of his tape against Nebraska it looks like he has a good motor, always trying to finish the play. Out of curiosity, what do you think of a 4-3 team playing him at outside linebacker? He looked pretty good in coverage, plenty of speed and athleticism, and he'd be a great blitzer.

I just don't think he'd make much of an impact next year at DE because he needs to bulk up to play there. So I don't think that'd fix our DE problem for next year. Every scouting report I've looked at says he has trouble shedding blocks and playing the run. That's due to his size. And if he has trouble with that at the college level, I feel like it'd take at least a year to improve on it in the NFL.

i still feel that after last year the lions should have signed Ray Lewis to be a LB Coach. the Discipline he would show would have been outstanding

Jones is still signed for 2 more years. Young would be the only one we'd have to consider resigning and that'll come down to how much money he wants because he's replaceable.

Jones is basically useless and a huge cap savings if cut. Ansah wasn't exactly the picture of health last year. Without him in the line up we may have the weakest ends in the nfl and was a major reason we couldn't get consistent pressure. Young had more offsides than sacks. And Devin Taylor was good in spurts. Defense starts up front if you don't have a good pass rush you could put Darrell Revis back there and it wouldn't matter, as Tampa showed this year.

Yeah Ray Lewis wants to give up a cushy ESPN job to be a positional coach in Detroit.

Mayhew - hey Ray do you want to
Lewis - fuck off

I agree that we need to get another DE in the offseason. I think that's obvious. But I also don't think Barr would help that much next year. Next year he'd be as bad if not worse than Avril was against the run. And I honestly don't know how effective he'd be pass rushing until he bulks up some more. So we'd still have to get another DE along with him to feel half-decent with our DEs.

Don't like the idea of drafting a guy in the first that doesn't play every down, but he could be used in pass rush situations with Taylor in run situations.

Our O-line was good last year but we may be switching blocking schemes. Mayhew has done good getting guys that play in the trenches, whats the likely hood of taking a LT and kicking reiff to RT with waddle as the back up?

I don't know for sure, but I think it'd be more likely that we'd leave Reiff at LT and draft a guy to play RT, leaving Waddle as the backup
