Confusing Things That Leyland Does

August 16 2009... Ryan Rugburn committed 3 errors in a 3-2 loss at KC and his 10 inning error cost the Tigers the game and the division... Leyland continues to use this clown all wrong... How many games did he cost the Tigers at 2nd base last year for 3 months with his poor hitting and his 10 errors in 56 games before Jim started to use him right the last two months.. His hitting has regressed verses RHP the last few years.... We all know he is better then Young in the outfield but Young will pout if he is the DH like he should be.. All Raburn is is a platoon player or a fourth outfielder at best... Bat him verses LHP only and he has value...

Since he insist DY is in LF there is no where else he can play, right? I don't want him either but if DY is in LF and Dirks plays, who do you want at 2b, Kburn or Dirks? Kburn goes to DH when Santiago plays.

Tonights game has tippy toes Delmon at DH;
Raburn in Leftfield,

edit, cringe at 2B vs. lefthander

I know I am late on this thread but Jesus Christ! DY is no gold glover but Raburn, and I cant beleive I'm going to type this, is less of a liability at 2b than he is in the of. The dude gets a horrible jump and then doesn't recover. I will admit that I am one of the mudhen haters but I can't stand watching him flail at fly balls anymore. Atleast DY makes some plays..... as ugly as they may be.

I'm sure even Leyland knows that Young is a very poor outfielder. This is one of those examples of Leyland managing the personality of his team. As a stats person, I'd prefer that the better fielder be in and the poorer one at DH. However, I think we sometimes forget that a ballclub is not unlike any work environment and sometimes you need to compromise for the good of the workplace.

But what does 100 home runs have to do with two guys who aren't even close to 100 home runs? I don't get it unless you're implying more home runs equals the better player?

My point is that obviously the guy who has the same number of HRs in half the plate appearances is the better HR hitter.

Similarly, a guy with the same oWAR in half the PAs has had a better offensive career.

No.

Just no, this entire post is wrong.

That is incorrect.. RR had 10 errors in 56 games at second base last year... he had only 3 errors in the outfield.. I agree he gets terrible jumps in the outfield but his more of a liability on the infield then he is in left field... He is a awful second basemen and or third-basemen...RR cost the Tigers a couple of games at second base with his ineptitude..

This thread is still going? Really I can't believe we're still trying to figure out which of Raburn and Young is the worse defender. It's like the 2000 Gore/Bush election. Neither one of these guys belong at a defensive position especially late in a game. Teams can survive with "holes" in their defense but these two guys are quantum singularities.

Totally wrong. Raburn is a slightly below average outfielder with a fine arm. Young is probably the worst in the league. How is that hard to differentiate?

But they don't, one guy has 72 home runs and the other 53. How is that the same? Lol. Sure, one needs less AB to hit a HR but quit saying the same because 72 isn't the same as 52.

How hard is it to just do the math? Young has 72 homers in 2817 at bats and Raburn has 53 homers in 1399 at at bats. Raburn has a better HR per AT Bat rate, therefore has more power.

Raburn 26.3

Young 39.1

I understand that you goof. But first he used 100 home run scenario and kept saying the same, the same..

Where did I ever say he didn't have more power?

People arguing semantics is a pet peeve. I thought I'd just put the stats out there.

I'm beginning to think Jim you just post to make a point without trying to understand the discussion set be forth..

My point had nothing to do with who was the better HR hitter between Young and Raburn.

My entire point was that you saying Raburn and Young are equal offensively because they have the same oWAR is equally as absurd as saying two hitters with the same number of HRs are the equal despite one having twice as many PAs.
