There is never a suitable replacement when a manager gets let go. No GM knows "well if we fire this guy we should be able to get that guy". Leyland is a big douche.

I say bring him back regardless of what the team does from here on out. At the end of the day, managers do not really get you that many wins or losses. I see it as more of a professional baby-sitting job. His lineups do tend to make you scratch your head but I have gotten used to it.

The one manager I would want is Tony Pena, in the event that Leyland retires or gets the axe.

If anyone should be closely scrutinized, it should be DD. He is good with contracts but is horrible at getting talent in the organization. We should have greater depth in the minors. We have very few, if any, MLB ready players in the organization. The manager can only work with what he is given. This team is good but is it good enough? Hard to say when you look at the defense, this may be the demise of this 2012 team and last I looked, Leyland does not take the field.

Among Tiger managers with at least one full season, Leyland's winning percentage ranks 9th all time in Tigers history. His 592 wins ranks 3rd all time. Sparky Anderson through 7 seasons had 1 playoff appearance, 1 World Series, and 2 90 win seasons. Leyland has 2 playoff appearance, 1 pennant, and 2 90 win seasons. This stretch by the Tigers is one of their best in modern history. He took a franchise that had developed a culture of losing and changed that in one season. Fans make too much of lineups. It's been studied numerous times and proven that lineups have no meaningful effect on the outcome of a game. It's amazing to me people would rather have Francona who fostered a clubhouse that ended up in turmoil. Managing a real baseball team is different than managing a season on MLB The Show. If it was just lineups and bullpens, Dombrowski could do that from his office with his iPhone.

Dombrowski has done great turning minor league talent into major league talent. Cabrera, Jackson, Verlander, Scherzer, Fister, Avila were all brought over through minor league talent, not too mention former Tigers such as Carlos Guillen. Dombrowski's downfall was contracts. Locking players like Willis and Robertson to long term deals.

Also the Tigers went defense in 2009. We ended up with Everett, Laird and Inge. Then fans wanted offense. It's not easy to put together a team full of 2-way players.

id like to make the distinction that we would not be firing him, we would just not offer him an extension. hes not on contract for next year. part of me thinks hes planning on retiring anyways.

if smoker doesn't get a contract he'll retire, but my bet is he wants back, but retiring is a easy way of letting him go.

Yeah, that dumb fucker started Verlander last night.

Stupid move.

Definately a managerial loss.

(shaking head) Starting Verlander......WTF was he thinking!!!

Its not about that but Leyland does many things where you just shake your head. We all know ultimately its the players but at times Leyland fucks up.

I can not find the Thread and post now but the question of how heathly Verlander is has been asked. I've read too many threads/post today now. The poster did not post any stats. So I did look them up and his pre AS game stats are much better than his post AS games stats. In fact. There are much better in ERA 2.58/3.48 and Batting average .200/.242, wins 9-5,.642%/4-3.571%. Granted wins do have to factor in the Tigers offence lack of. But all his stats do point to a downward trend.

So should JV not be 100% then I would question his start. But at the time of my post I did not have any questions. But could have now, should that be the case.

I believe if you can make a move for Francona or Gibson you have to make a change IF we miss the postseason with the talent this team has. It is HIGHLY unlikely a change would be made unless your bringing in a notable name to replace him with.

all he has gotten is one year contracts, amirite? that tells ya how management feels about him. they sure didn't lock him down to a long contract.

I voted to replace him, but I would only want it to happen if it was a big name / really respected guy, like Joe Maddon, Francona, or Gibson. If it's just some nobody then forget it. But either way, the assistant coaches need to be swapped out, they are not good.

who wouldn't want to manage a team that has 3,4,and 5 hitters in Beast,Fielder and Martinez? along with Jackson, Dirks and J.V. coming back.

In truth, I'd prefer another manager. Never been a huge fan, though I'm not really a hater. My take is that - as kc noted - the guy's future will be tied to the finish. Fair or not, that'll be the criteria. Methinks he's a goner if they fall off & I believe they just might.

I'm only in favor of keeping leyland or going out and snagging francona.

Would love to see Gibson hook back up with the tigers but I know he signed an extension
