Fielder: Needs reality check

If Fielder weighs 275 five years from now, he will be an overpaid, slow, fat ballplayer. He needs to lose at least 50 pounds over the winter.

50lbs?!?!? Would you really want Fielder playing at 225lbs? He's a power hitter and needs to play a bit heavier. The guy isn't a slob by any means, he's just got a naturally stockier frame. I'm thinking maybe getting to 250lbs could be reasonable for him, but not 225lbs.

Even at 225 his BMI would be off the charts. If that were all muscle, he'd be a better hitter than ever. I'd sacrifice 5 home runs (I think he'd hit more anyway) for 10 extra doubles, a few triples, and a safe call at home in G2 of the WS.

I just don't think 225lbs is reasonable for his frame. Have you seen the dude's arms? They look like they are a good 24" around. I'd be on board with him dropping a few L-B's, but 50 is a bit much, IMHO. Let's get him on the Miggy plan where he loses about 20lbs of fat and bulks up even more.

Sandoval at 275 and 240. Prince at 240 would make a positive difference.

Based on no factual evidence.

I'm not sure losing weight will suddenly make Prince faster. And it certainly won't get Peralta to wave him to slide on the outside.

A pro that gives a fuck about appearance, rather than performance, is not in any way a good thing.

Fielder has been a top 5 hitter over the past three years.

That's all you need to know about his motivation.

It's not possible to be that good without extraordinaire motivation and work ethic.

OK, now how 'bout that defense? Don't you think his defense might improve if he dropped about 75 pounds of lard?

A good slide and he's safe.

Same goes for Infantes slide into 2nd, not sure who taught him to slide so that his back foot is the one to hit the base, but that slide was horrible.

Babe Ruth and Miguel Cabrera were hardly the model of physical fitness, yet they are two of the greatest hitters to ever play the game.

Who would you rather have as your QB, Tim Tebow or Joe Namath?

At some point you gotta quit looking at the guy playing the game and start looking at the stats they put up. Fielder and Cabrera are two of those types of players.

Didn't Cabrera drop about 30-50 pounds in the offseason last year?

Weights not even close to being the biggest issue for Fielders defense.

His height and poor scooping/catching are his biggest defensive flaws.

Nothing he can do about his height.

Fielders tipping 300 easy. No way he's 275. I've seen him listed at 295, so yes, 50 pounds. That would still leave him at 245...if he is 275, which i extremely doubt, he can lose 30. He is a fat slob. I don't know who you've been watching. He can't slide, he's slow as fuck, and he fields like shit. He can't even bend down to pick up the ball sometimes. Its horrible.

"Oh but he hits .315!!!" Great, there's more to baseball than hitting.

Its much easier for a tall guy to bend over and reach the ground when there isn't a 50 pound gut in the way. Isn't this obvious>?

What? No one remembers him falling into 2nd base any time he tries to stretch something into a double?

Dude's got 75 pounds of unnecessary flab. Get him in the gym, have him lose fat and gain muscle.

That refutes nothing.

His poor scooping has nothing to do with an inability to bend over.

What are the years for those pictures?

Before: 2010. After: 2011. Sandoval hardly played in the 2010 post season because he could not cover ground at third.
