Fister Traded, now is retiring from baseball

Per Brent Ashcroff-INTERESTING DETROIT TIGERS NEWS - My wife Lori Clark Ashcroft has been in Orlando at the MLB Winter Meetings all week. Tonight, she had a 20-minute conversation with Al Kaline. She asked Al why Doug Fister was traded. Al told Lori that the Tigers offered Fister a long-term deal but he declined to sign it, saying he wanted to ultimately finish his career with a team on the west coast. The Tigers then felt compelled to get rid of Fister because they knew he was leaving Detroit at the end of his contract no matter what, and when he left, the club would get nothing in return. So, for those wondering why the Fister trade came together to fast, this is why. I don't think Al Kaline would lie. - with Ryan Schuiling

This is certainly believeable, but even with the Tigers knowing Doug let them know he planned to leave for the west coast, it just seems that they jumped the gun in dealing Fister.
Might have gotten something better than this if they waited.

I think I would have waited until the winter meetings to trade him. They may have gotten into a bidding war situation.

Everyone was pissed when he Granderson, Jackson for Jackson, Scherzer, Coke, Schlereth. That trade turned out fine.

There just are not any teams willing to give up left handed pitchers let alone a left handed starter and DD got two of them.

It is to early to jump to conclusions and say that the tigers have lost the trade before seeing any of the players.

Yet we do it. It's the way it goes. Imo the trade sucked.

Every expert has said that the Nat's fleeced DET. Ray is the key to the deal. And so far, his minor league numbers are not awe inspiring. Scouts have said there is a good chance Ray ends up being a LOOGY. Even if he succeeds, odds are he will only be a #4 or #5 starter.

Krol IS NOT a starter. He is a LOOGY. Plain and simple. This would be like saying Coke could have been a starter prior to 2011.

Lombardozzi = a young Santiago. Utility Infielder.

This is not inspiring considering DET gave up a #2 starter under team control for another two years for a utility infielder and two LOOGYs.

Call them Loogy's now. But will you when they start contributing to the team in a positive way?

The Two left handed pitchers thing I typed it pretty fast and posted it, I have known Ray is the SP and Krol is the RP since 2 days after the trade. It has been duely noted in MLBRUMORS.COM, 97.1 the ticket and on this board over and over. YouR pretty much splittling hairs as usual.

Some of those same scouts said Max Scherzer was nothing more than a closer at the time of trade, scouting reports change yearly, monthly or even weekly. Look at the reports on Chris Davis and Domonic Brown before the 2013 season compare them to the 2014 scouting reports. Nothing but toilet paper

Not sure they had to get rid of him that quick just so he could finish on the west coast. Hell, if it was me I would have sent him to an east coast team. Fk em.

Sending him to an east coast team would be a move that Randy Smith would do.

Word would get around to other players and agents.

Free agents would rebel against this caliber of GM by not signing here. Other players would also make sure Detroit was in their no trade clause.

This is why DD and Mr. I made sure Magglio was well taken care of his last year and his contract. Players view Detroit as a good place to play

Everyone realizes that Washington D.C. is on the east coast right?

They did send him to an east coast team...the Washington Nationals.

Lots of guys projected as starting pitchers end up as bullpen guys. Ray has low upside, which is why he's likely to be a 4 or 5 starter or a bullpen lefty, or LOOGY as some call them.

I don't see any hair splitting, but if all your information comes from MLBTRADERUMORS.com and 97.1, then you are not getting very good information, maybe you should broaden your horizons and read many of the articles KC links in the Tigers Team Notes thread, get a bigger picture.

With all the other pitchers available in free agency that require no compensation I doubt any other teams were willing to deal any LHP's. Teams just don't part with them.

Not to mention it's irrelevant where they sent him, as he said he wanted to finish his career on the west coast, and Fister is likely 2 contracts away from being finished, unless his arm goes bad.

So now he gets two more year pitching for a contending team, then he gets to be a FA and decide where he wants to play. I don't think Fister is weeping over it.

Then don't trade for a LH pitcher....just trade for better or ML ready players!

I used those as examples of reporting the trade. Nothing else. I get my information from multiple sources including KC's posts.

I suggest you start giving players a chance before jumping to conclusions. Once these players start having success Rebbiv and yourself are going to both have egg on your face.

With each statement you both make just puts another egg into the bowl. Accept the trade Fister isn't comming back.

Exactly. I don't understand the fascination with LHP anyways, unless the guy has "ace" type stuff like a Cliff Lee or CC Sabathia, you're just gibing in to the splits most of the time.

LHP are far more valuable out of the bullpen than as SP's.

Even if those players do have success, it was still a bad trade. And if they don't....then I guess you better be ready for the eggs.

Thats where you are wrong. Rebbiv and yourself both say the players are all Loogy's.

The trade is yet to be determined.

No backing out now. If the players have success u2 are both wrong and the trade is a success.

I have seen some call Fister a #2 starter. Holy man crush Batman. So with this logic Porcello would have been a #2 starter the 2nd half of the season.

Since Rick started throwing his curveball and pretty much ditched his slider the K's keep going up. 2014 has break out year written all over it

LOOGY = Lefty Only, One Guy Out (also known as lefty specialist)

I think Reb broke down all starters with some statistical rankings. Based on the assumption that there are 30 teams there are 30 #1 starters, 30 #2's and so on. Based on the stats he used Fister was ranked in the top 31-60. I don't think any good team would be happy with Fister as a #2 but using the stats he provided he is in the top 31-60. I think that you should rank them in tiers. Maybe there aren't really 30 #1 pitchers in terms of talent / production but since there are 30 teams technically you have to have 30 #1 pitchers.

30 teams x 5 starters = 150 MLB starters

1-30 = #1
31 - 60 = #2

61 - 90 = #3

91 - 120 = #4
121 - 150 = #5

Choose your stats!

Since 2011 (TOTAL), Fister is:

10th in WAR

12th in RA9-WAR

Let's try last 3 years away (assumes Park Neutral, 140 IP min)

19th in FIP
