Game 3: Broncos @ Lions *Sunday Night* Thread

My fault, thought it was an LB. I know it was a great play, but that's on Stafford to see that guy backing into coverage.

This is a game that shows you he cannot elevate the others around him. Think the elite QBs would have lost this tonight? When you need this game desperately?

No worries, I was more upset before realizing that it was a S instead of LB...and while I agree it is on Stafford to recognize a S is playing LB and the window is therefore smaller, I just appreciate the playmaking required to get that INT.

Despite all the propping up with the #1 draft pick, blah, blah, blah...Stafford has never proven himself to be an Elite QB. after this many years, he is what he is. an elite QB isn't going to settle for the dink, dink, dink that Stafford did which drained the clock at the end, not to mention put them in a 4th and 5 situation that they then failed to convert. Stafford is a good QB, but he should never be considered Elite, which requires consistent winning above all else.

San Diego is looking like horse bleep. Minnesota is pretty good, but I don't think they are great by any stretch.

And regardless of how Denver ends up finishing, this is a game you win if you are a great QB. Your team is desperate, at home, at night. And he doesn't show up.

I love Peyton Manning as much as anyone else in the NFL, but if you can't beat him at 39 when you are supposedly in your prime, then you won't beat him when he's in a wheelchair.

It doesn't matter if you think this is a game they should win. I say it's a game they shouldn't win. Why? Because it's against Peyton Fucking Manning, that's why

to further my last post...an elite QB has the confidence and ability to throw the ball 15+ yards down the field and has developed an understanding of where his WR will be, and the guts plus accuracy to throw the ball where that WR can make a play, along with willingness to accept the pass might be incomplete or intercepted, but knowing he has a better chance that it gets completed if he throws it right.

Stafford has never had the accuracy to build up his confidence and trust that his WR will get the ball. and that is saying something when he has CJ out there. in the past he has been willing to throw it up to CJ for him to go make a play, but he no longer does that.

he also lacks willingness or ability or both to understand film and translate that onto the field. Brady, Manning, and AR...they have the brains to be elite. I'm not saying Stafford is stupid, but he certainly is lacking relative to those guys.

Well, then I don't know what to tell you. Peyton Manning has lost games before, believe it or not. If it's important enough, you win this game. But since they are the Lions, it's another wasted season.

Not against a team this flawed, he hasnt. Terrible defenses usually lose to QBs like Peyton Manning. Our offense just isn't good anymore. We've got an aging superstar that can't stretch the field anymore and the worst offensive line in the nfl, which wouldnt give a wr time to stretch the field anyway

He got creamed by the hapless Rams last year, he can lose games occasionally.

I don't care if it's Joe Montana on the other sideline, when you are a desperate organization that needs a win to keep a playoff hope alive, you are at night, you show SOMETHING. The Lions looked f'ing lifeless tonight. I almost fell asleep, and I'm pretty sure the announcers did too. What happened to the team that went 11-5 last year?

"Well, we just have to come out and play harder."

He's basically a younger Caldwell when it comes to excitement during the pressers.

They just showed the Lions first offensive snap today in slow mothing. Defender 2 yards behind the los before Bell got the hsndoff. Why can't we get the run game going? Lol.

For someone who was supposed to install discipline, I've never seen such undisciplined football. How many freaking false starts do these guys have??

Stafford calling protections at the line just ain't working, bring Dom back

Can anybody truly think that last year didn't have everything to do with #90?

While the line certainly wasn't good at all, they gave Stafford more time this week. And how does he respond? Holding onto the ball way too long, showing HORRIBLE pocket awareness, and being unable to read a linebacker backing into coverage.

I'm not sure how much time the Stafford backers are willing to give him. Another big game where you look to your QB to step up, make plays, and lead your team. And he does nothing.

It was hysterical that right when Chris Collingsworth was giving his "year 7 qb...this is when guys like stafford are supposed to beat manning" speech...he throws a pick. It was really really funny lol.

You don't need to be a great QB or even a good QB. Just a consistent solid QB. People say he's top 10, maybe top 13. He's top 25, in-fact I'd put him in the 20-25 range. He stinks. It should never take until week 3 of season 7 until someone realizes he's not good.

It seems like I have read many game summaries like this in the past. SAME OLD LIONS!

From ESPN

DETROIT -- Peyton Manning was cool and confident, lofting passes to teammates as if they were buddies in his backyard.

Whether it was third or fourth down, in the second or fourth quarter, the 39-year-old Manning showed he still has it.

Manning converted a fourth down with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas with 5 seconds left in the first half. Then he threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Owen Daniels on a third down with 2:28 remaining, lifting the Denver Broncos to a 24-12 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night.

He credited the coaching staff with using a pistol formation, giving him the ball in a short shotgun with a running back behind him, after he was under center for some snaps during the first two games.

Broncos continue to lean on defense while Peyton Manning settles in
Peyton Manning and the Broncos are 3-0 following a 24-12 victory against the Lions even as they struggle to strike the right balance on offense.

Lions in danger of starting season 0-5
The Lions are just not a good football team right now and are in danger of seeing their season slip away less than four games into the year, Michael Rothstein writes.
"I imagine it will be part of the arsenal throughout the season," Manning said. "It gave us some help in protection."

Manning was sacked only once after he was sacked seven times in the first two games, helping him more than double his longest pass of the year on his 45-yard pass to Thomas.

"We protected him better than we have," Denver coach Gary Kubiak said.

Manning was 31 of 42 for 324 yards with two TDs and an interception. He Brett Favre as the only players in NFL history with at least 6,000 completions.

The last time the Broncos (3-0) won their first three games was in 2013, when they reached the Super Bowl.

The Lions (0-3) are off to their worst start since 2010, when they finished 6-10.

"We do have 13 games left," Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. "They're not handing out trophies after three games and you can't be eliminated after three games."

Aqib Talib blocked an extra-point kick by former Bronco Matt Prater early in the second quarter to keep Denver's one-point lead. The Broncos also stopped a 2-point conversion run, keeping them ahead 14-12 early in the third quarter.

Stafford had three turnovers, including a fumble and interception at midfield in the fourth quarter. He might've had a good reason to be rattled because DeMarcus Ware was in on two sacks and he was hit and hurried throughout Detroit's home opener.

"Anytime you have that many turnovers, that's going to give you some problems," Caldwell said.

Broncos running back C.J. Anderson left in the first half to be evaluated for a concussion, but was cleared and returned in the second half.

Thomas had nine receptions for 92 yards and a lead-padding score in which he outleaped Darius Slay to snatch the football out of the air. He celebrated by backpedaling into the end zone, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Stafford was 31 of 45 for 282 yards with a 16-yard TD pass to Ameer Abdullah in the third quarter, two interceptions and a fumble on a play in which he had at least once chance to throw the ball away. Calvin Johnson had eight receptions for 77 yards and drew a pass-interference penalty against Talib in the end zone to set up Joique Bell's 1-yard leap over a pile of lineman.

It looked as if Detroit's defense was going to prevent the Broncos from taking advantage of Stafford's second turnover, but it negated a missed field goal by being in an illegal formation.

"I'm at fault," Caldwell said.

Denver got 5 yards closer and Brandon McManus made the field goal to give the Broncos a five-point lead.

Stafford then tried to force a pass to Johnson and safety David Bruton Jr. dropped into a zone to pick off the pass he tipped to himself with his right hand, then returned 12 yards.

"Our responsibility is get to the ball on defense," Bruton said.

Moments later, Manning lofted a 34-yard pass to Emmanuel Sanders, who outjumped Slay, to set up his throw that only the 6-foot-3 Daniels could catch in the end zone.

Joey Bosa please.

I'm good with that.

2nd rounder better be a RT though. I think Waddle is pretty good, actually......but he seems like the guy who will never be healthy for 16 games......more like 10-12/year.

Depends on FA though.......they have 4 big needs.......RT, DE, CB and QB. They aren't going to get 4 1st round picks.......so they need to make a splash in FA this year.
