I love this

Agreed. We both talk football even if we disagree. All I do is talk football on here.

The personal attacks by people need to stop. Just talk football like hughes and I do.

And we don't kill threads. We make them explode with football talk.

Actually, that's not football talk were exploding with...

Sometimes I wish you guys would kill each other. :)

Seriously, though, debate and argument are healthy. I disagree with each of you more often than not, but that's what make the world go 'round.

Get back to the topic. What do you want to discuss about it? What points do you want to make? \

What do you want to add besides...that's good/nice of Mathis.

Oh, an adult. Holy shit...well then.

My biggest surprise with Mathis hasn't been his ability, he was good in Jacksonville, holds a few team records. But the whole reason he was let go was because of knee/groin injuries, yet he was Mr Consistency last season.

I'm glad they added depth this season at CB because the chances of your top two CBs playing all 16 games is so small, Lions were beyond fortunate last season. Having a guy like Mathis to mentor them is a nice bonus, seems he was an early preview of the kind of character guy Caldwell wants in place.

What the hell is this? A conversation? No no no no, this has got to stop.

At his age, I think we're all waiting for the other shoe to drop injury wise. As far as character goes, the combination of not drafting criminals and Caldwell's demeanor has been something I've loved to see. The year we went to playoffs under Schwartz, (2011?) as great as the success was, I hated rooting for them. They played like a bunch of thugs and some of that was due to leadership.

I agree with you about the fortunate part, but they did lose their #3 and #4 corners for the YEAR within the first 9 quarters of football. The Lions bounced back pretty well having to play their #5, #6 and #7 for a large part of the year. So there were injuries.....but not to the top 2.....which is fortunate.

When they picked up Mathis the first time I thought he would be another Drayton Florence type in that he would be quality depth but offer little to the team overall. I was very wrong. He has been nothing short of very good since his first snap as a Lion. I hope he can keep it up for one more year!!

Mathis has been a good player the last two seasons. He was the top graded number 2 CB in football last year. We are lucky to have him. He has stabilized the number 2 spot. His tecnhique and awareness is really good which helps the old guys play well. And Carter has a year to develop which is nice.

Slay, Mathis, Quin staying healthy is the key again. Slay/Carter combo and Mathis/Carter combo its' tough to know how it would work. Is the nickel playing well? Is Quin and Dig healthy? How is our pass rush? how is our LB coverage?

The pass rush has me worried. In a way, I'm glad Suh is gone. At least in terms of what came with him off the field. But he sure did gobble up interior linemen. That freed up everyone else in the front 7. Ngata is a good player, and I hope he can serve some of that same role. But losing arguably the best DT in the game has to take a toll.

Ngata can rush the passer, Ansah can rush the passer, Walker for 16 over Fairley for 7 can rush the passer, Wright has more pass rush skills than Mosley, and Austin can blitz effectively. Year 2 of the system. And then you have guys that can develop in Webster, Taylor and Reid. The talent is there. The scheme is there. The coaching is there. Good blitzers are there at LB and safety.

Ngata will take the doubles. Ansah, Walker/Wright and Jones can do their thing against single blocking and Austin will blitz wisely again.

I think Mathis maybe trying to position for a DB coach position after his career is over. Which could be a good fit. At his age he needs to play smart. He still has that elite height for a CB, but doesn't seem to have the speed, so he needs to make up for it with smarts. I'm all about him passing those down to young guys.

I thought his play slipped up a bit in the second half of the season. By the second half of the 2015 season we may need a young guy to step up into the #2 position.

It is refreshing to see Mathis willing to help his replacement, but again I feel he is thinking long term for the coaching position, which is smart on his part.

Your post is exactly why I don't think the Lions will be affected that much on the DL. Suh gets as many double teams as CJ does....and he is gone. Bringing in Ngata really helps balance that out because he is going to see those same double teams now.

Before anyone jumps all over me, I am not saying Ngata is as good as Suh, and other players along the DL will have to step up. What I am saying is that I don't believe the impact of losing Suh will cause a massive loss of prodution. I just don't. Ngata gets great push inside and demands double teams too, allowing our DE's and Walker 1-on-1 matchups. It's not like, just because we lost Suh the offenses we face get to play 3 more OL.

Agreed.

Your post reminds me of Daniel Tosh and his Brett Favre bit. He isn't correct about being eligible for the practice squad......but it's still funny.
