Lions ask to talk to Wisenhunt

It was Whisenhunts call but I think we dodged a bullet if he demands a 3-4. Wastes Suh, Ansah and Fairley. That's three 1st round picks.

Let's wait and see who we get and what the coach actually does in 2014 before we judge too harshly.

You waste Suh, Fairley and Ansah switching to 3-4. Tough call.

We'll see who they hire.

You don't waste them! Where do you get that?

All three could do well in a 3-4...... You have no idea.

Is it ideal for our current personnel......no......but they wouldn't be wasted!

In fact, I think Suh and Ansah would be awesome in a 3-4.

I think it would be a waste as well. Suh isnt a DE, neither is Fairley, i dont care how beastly they are. Their strengths are on the inside. And the DEs we do have arent big enough or physical enough. Then you have to either draft a beast of a man at NT or look via FA.

LBs too small as well

Corners not very physical except for Slay. He could adjust possibly

Im all for change at times but i think it would be disastrous for this team and take a major overhaul. It would set us back 2-3 more years. You look at our defense now and we're around 2 corners and another LB away fron being a more than solid D.

You gotta read my post. In NO WAY was I saying a 3-4 would be an ideal fit for our CURRENT personnel (in fact I said EXACTLY that).......just that Suh and Ansah would be just fine in a 3-4. Can you imagine them on the same side? Impossible to block. It would require a back or TE be kept in to block.

Yes. Ansah is raw. Raw doesn't mean bad. He adjusted pretty well to the NFL in less than one year.......a transition to a rush LB wouldn't be that hard. He would be a poor mans Aldon Smith. Suh is certainly athletic enough to play DE. It wouldn't be a waste. Ideal, no. A waste.......hell no!

I never mentioned Fairley because I don't see him in a 3-4. He would make great trade bait, though. A young, good, DT with a very tradable contract would bring a nice return of draft picks from the right team. Shit, IND gave up a 1st for Richardson!!!!

Suh having to 2 gap would walk.

That is why I think it would be a waste. I think he could play 3-4 DE.

Your opinion on what Suh's thoughts about switching to a 3-4 would be are irrelevant to this conversation.

Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't. He's more than likely done here in a couple years anyway. The Lions have to get out from under one of the big three contracts if they ever want to have any cap space again.....and CJ and Staff aren't tradable.

It's very relevant if he ends up leaving. And it's as fact based as you "knowing" Ansah and Suh would do well in a 3-4.

Suh will be extended this offseason for cap relief. It's not contract size that is the problem. Stafford's cap number would be 7 million based on his new deal strucuture. It's the previous 2 restructures. Restructures that can be managed with properly strucutring Suh's extension. It's possbile to keep Suh and still managage the cap and draft well. That's the best option. I don't want 20 million of room if we lose a talent like Suh.

Every letter you just wrote is irrelevant to the topic. Topic was if Suh, Ansah and Fairley would be a waste in a 3-4. No, they wouldn't. If your argument is that Suh would be unhappy and leave.....I can't argue your opinion on what Suh thinks about his role in a hypothetical 3-4 defense.

As to the point you're switching to......losing him and bringing in two or three top tier starters actually helps this team. That being said.....making sure you brought in the right people would be the key to the transition.

Do I want to lose Suh......no......but they will have no choice if they want continued success down the line. Constant restructuring is NOT the answer. Eventually, you have to pay the piper.

The piper was losing KVB/Peterman/Avril/Gosder. We replaced those guys just fine.

We'll do the same wiht Burleson and Delmas hopefully. Suh is a superstar and great DT. The Lions get worse losing him or moving him to a 3-4 to waste his talents. {lus we draft every year. The draft is where we get our talent. And Suh is not a restructure this time. It's an extension. You want to extend your best players.

They are running a 4-3 so it doesn't matter anyway now.

Imo, he wanted his own QB. NFL these days you don't need a high round QB. Just draft a mid round QB who has accuracy and can give you the option to run. Of course those type QB might go higher now. The Staffords of the world, not desired.

Whiz wanted money and personnel decisions.

Lions cap is just fine with a Suh extension and Burleson pay cut and Delmas extension or cut. Plenty of room.

Whiz boned us? I don't think so. There is a lot that probably goes into making a decision. The guy had two offers. He looked at the Front office, salary cap, current roster, culture, stability, pressure, home, and contract. Probably even more. He probably wrote it all down, looked at the pro's and cons and selected the best fit. Too me, that say's way more about the current state of this team than anything. He probably made the right decision. All this stupid talk in the media about this Lions job is the one to get is crap. The only guy I have read or heard that made sense of all this was Rich Gannon.

I did not want him anyway because he was just another guy doomed to failure and he deserves better than that. He is very strict, precise, and want's a great deal of control. He was never going to get that in Detroit. I think the dysfunctional / egotistical front office, salary cap, and undisciplined player's made his decision. This is not the man's first rodeo.

I want the Lions to win as much as anyone but as long as old man Ford is still sucking air, this team is going nowhere. I can only pray the old man has not rubbed off on his son. I think he (Jr.) want's to change things but Dad is still in control. This team is pathetic in it's approach, leadership, and delivering a good product to the well deserving fans who have been making that man rich for years. The only way to change is to not go to games. EMPTY SEATS!

No dis-respect to Caldwell, I'm sure he is a fine coach on many levels. If Tony Dungy back's him, whom am I to say he sucks. It's not that, he is doomed to fail because of what's above him in the chain of command.

Can you post that Rich Gannon article? Didn't see that one.

I guess I said it wrong? I only heard Gannon, today on NFL XM 88 but read only positive things about the potential of the Lions head coaching job. Gannon was challenging the notion about the Lions being the job to get. He said when Whiz looked at all things: cap, players, front office, executive patience, and cited the Lions record with all the "supposed talent,'" he may have been the wiser. I agree. Gannon has a knack for keeping it real, I enjoy listening to him. Additionally, I never hear him raving about Stafford either. He does love him some Tom Brady though. He has always broken Stafford down fairly and I have to say, it's never sounded that great of Stafford. He does agree about the potential and arm strength but questions his mechanics and decision making ability, not to mention maturity.

Nothing wrong. I was interested in Gannon's take, I think the media has over hyped the Lions as well. It probably saved Mayhew's skin.
