Lions draft grades

Only thing I will say is that when certain players fall like rocks and everyone is screaming to draft them after they have fell 3+ rounds....you know the experts in each teams war rooms may just know something that we don't

My point from earlier exactly. It's easy to say "Ifo was a 3rd round guy"... but all 32 teams said otherwise.

Mayhew didn't miss out on a pick there, no one wanted him earlier, or they'd have taken him.

Clearly whatever mock said he was a 3rd round guy, was simply wrong. NFL teams felt he was a 7th round pick, and clearly a whole bunch of teams didn't feel he was even that.

When people don't really know where youre going to play at the next level....it means youre not really going to play much at the start of your career at the next level.

This is what happens when you listen to mock draft sites instead of the coaches and office people of the team that drafted him.

Mayhew said "He is definitely going to play corner for us when he gets here" when asked about Alex Carter playing safety. He said he does think he has the ability, but he's going to be a corner in Detroit.

When Caldwell was asked where Carter would play, he said "Well, I think he answered that. He's going to play corner for us. We're going to put him there and see how it goes."

Ok...so then he takes snaps from bentley and lawson. 2 other 3-4th rd cbs. Cycling a bunch of average players around....yippie. i guess i should be used to mayhew drafting replacements for guys that have barely been here a couple years. Hence we have 2 recent drafts with no one left on the team.

And excuse me for not listening to a douche like mayhew....the guy who said he was resigning suh the last 2 years.

Kiper's Grade:

Detroit Lions: B

Top needs: OL, DT, CB, RB

The Lions were involved in one of the few trades we saw in a semi-sleepy Round 1, and the strategy was clear: Fix the offensive line, particularly on the interior. They let the Broncos move up and added Manny Ramirez in pick swap, which landed them a player who has a real shot to start at center, which was a trouble spot for them in 2014. After moving down, they took Laken Tomlinson, a player I had rated as the No. 1 guard in the draft -- again, that's a guy who should start immediately at left guard. Even if Tomlinson is a bit of a reach, you added one starter and potentially two with the value of a single pick. That's not too bad. Reggie Bush is gone, but Ameer Abdullah is now here. This was about where I thought Abdullah would go -- solid pick. Alex Carter gives them some needed depth in the secondary, and the addition of Gabe Wright gives them much-needed depth on the interior of the defensive line. Wright could make some plays as a rotation player. Quadre Diggs is an intriguing physical talent who has the chance to stick, and Corey Robinson is a massive tackle who might end up at guard. The Lions clearly wanted to improve the interior of the offensive line and add useful depth on defense, and they accomplished those things. Abdullah will also be a fun one to watch.

So say he does take snaps from Bentley and Lawson? That means a draft pick improved the team in the first year. That's a really, really good thing. I don't expect it to happen but I'm baffled as to why that would upset you.

Bentley and Lawson are nickel guys. Carter is not. What's so hard to understand about this?

And the funny thing is most people probably would have praised the pick if we took him in the 4th or 5th round...instead he gets passed by everyone and falls all the way to the 7th. And no one would have known he was going to fall that far.

Of course it upsets him!! Drafting Carter may have improved the team. He's worried about taking snaps away from Bentley and Lawson? 2 guys he bashes on the regular! Lol. He loves seeing this team fail. When is everybody going to realize this? That's the real question.

This team is Holeless with great depth

A+

Laken first round talent per the nfl. Abdullah can be a game changer. Carter good press and good depth for outside cb. Gabe wright penetrating dt

You have to be blind to not love this draft. Time to see if they actually pan out. They get two years.

4th this year is worth third next year. Allows wright to develop. Wright had 3rd round grade anyway.

Get a 5th next year and two or more comp picks. Mayhew gm of year

We seemed to fill a lot, if not all holes we had during the draft without any signifigant reaches. Was a nice blend of need and BPA. I think the draft kind of fell into place almost perfectly for Mayhew and Co. The FB pick surprised me but after reading about the kid and hearing the front office comment on their reasoning, it doesn't seem as silly as I initially thought.

Only time will tell but I think this is another 2013 draft class, maybe better. So I give it an A.

1) OG Laken Tomlinson - 2 bookend Guards now. Love this pick. Lombardi's offenseive protection on line starts from the inside. All locked up now. Protect Stafford as much as possible and establish a running game with Bell and Abdullah. Strong as a bear and smart as hell. I see this kid bouncing to LG and Warford staying put.
Grade: A

2) RB Ameer Abdullah - Not my favorite pick. After Gurley and Gordon, you can throw all the RBs in a pile and pick one I guess. Not doubting this kid's ability but his size and fumbling issues scare me. Hard worker and willing to get better tell me he's a stand up kid. Great hands and good vision with burst. Should compliment Bell nice this year. 2-back system in the NFL anyways so people need to stop whining about him being a bellcow.
Grade: C+

3) CB Alex Carter - Good pedigree. Smart kid and character guy who's got size and is physical. Needs a year under Mathis and everything is good. Might be able to play Safety too. Upgrade over Lawson and Bentley IMO.
Grade: B

4) DT Gabe Wright - Love this pick! Will compete with Walker for the starting gig. Good pass-rusher, just needs to work on run-stopping and he will do that. Excellent pursuit too, high motor. Love how the Lions are matching up a more quicker athletic DT with Ngata in Walker and Wright. It's a trend. Traded up for him but the Lions will be getting that 3rd back for Suh anyways. Smart move. This kid will make an impact.
Grade: A-

5) FB Michael Burton - Meh. Brings size to the backfield and another guy who can catch the ball very well for a big man. STs guy at worse.
Grade: C

6) CB Quandre Diggs - 4 year starter in college, Quentin Jammers younger bro. Had a bad combine but is another physical player. And if Austin likes him, I like him
Grade: C+

7) OT Corey Robinson - One of my favorite picks. Monstrous human being who should probably start at RT for us. Athletic and had a 3rd or 4th rd grade. Might be the steal of the draft for us.
Grade: A+

Overall a solid B+

Looking to help out Stafford with Tomlinson and Ramirez (trade). Looking to establish the run with the first two picks as well. And a couple of toys for TA to play with always helps out as well. Love this draft!

Tony is dumb. That is all....

Ps the team fails all the time. ...i want to see them actually succeed for once and the draft is a key reason why we've sucked for the last 20 years. Nice job millen jr.

So i apologize for having such high expectations that i would think you could get more than 1 starter and a bunch of rotational guys out of an entire draft.

Seems like the consensus is we are May champions again. We kick the pre-preseasons ass.

Mayhew has never failed at adding talent.
This coaching staff and group of players hasn't failed yet either.

11-5 with great additions. Deep complete team. Super bowl caliber team

Only in the eyes of the homers. Every expert I've read said the reality of the story. We reached for tomlinson, ameer had durability and size concerns to be an every down back and Carter might start down the road....might. c+ drafts with 1 starter.....have some work to do if winning championships is your goal.

Lies. Lots of good value and filling needs per experts.

We only needed one starter at lg. like I said depth draft. Abdullah will be a game changer and get carries. Starter label is dumb for rbs

Carter is good cb depth on outside. Future starter. Mathis and slay just too good

The only one that was a reach was Burton. Counter to what the "experts" might claim, if you get a guy who will not be around when you pick next, then it is NOT a reach. If a guy is projected to be picked no later than the middle of R2 and you don't pick until late R2, then taking him late R1 is NOT a reach because the guy would not be there so you can either take him then or not have him. If he is the #1 player at his position and that is an extreme position of need, that furthers the fact it is NOT a reach. The Lions were smart in finding a trade partner to move back as far as they could, can't ask for more than that. They knew who their first pick was going to be, they managed that move as best as can be demanded.

Well depends what the drop off is to the #2 guy at the position and what the position is.

Bottom line is we have no idea if any of these guys are good picks. There is no slam dunk stud we got, outside of no competition, we might not have a year 1 starter. Historically about half round 1 guys are not starters year 1 week 1, just goes down from there each round.

Expecting Tomlinson to be better than Sims is nothing but hope.
