Lions draft grades

If I were to guess...Mel Kiper Jr. probably makes more from ESPN than any NFL scout or any other front office person outside of a GM / President of football operations.

I am sure you are right, but since scouts and coaches don't count against the cap, he wouldn't be.

If this guy was anywhere near as accurate as he pretends to be, Jerry Jones would have backed a Ryder truck up to his door years ago, and started shoveling money onto the front lawn.

Kiper is actually slightly less accurate than most of the mock draft sites, and they are about as accurate as a broken watch, only right twice a day.

My favorite Mel Kiper quote is: ?If [Clausen is] not a successful starting quarterback in the NFL, I?m done. That?s it. I?m out.?

Okay Mel... would you fucking leave already?

Or how about some other Gems:

?Ki-Jana (Carter) could be the next Bo Jackson.?

?Give the Lions credit for going away from their biggest needs to take receiver Mike Williams. ? I?ll see you at his Hall of Fame induction.?

?Three years from now you could be looking at a guy that?s certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league? look out because the skill level he has is certainly John Elway-like.? (Jamarcus Russell)

?Akili Smith will be a great NFL player and would finally provide the Cincinnati Bengals with the passer they?d lacked since Boomer Esiason.?

?He?s a hot guy right now because of the fact that he?s what you want in terms of accuracy. And that?s not just in the pocket, that?s not just when he has all day to throw. He can roll right, he can roll left and throw accurately.? (Mark Sanchez)

?You look at that No. 8 (Carr?s jersey number), you look at Troy Aikman and what he meant to Jimmy Johnson and the Dallas Cowboys. That foundation, that building block that you go and you build around and you get the supporting cast and the rest is history.? (David Carr)

?Harrington, who has a Brett Favre-like flair for the dramatic, was a highly productive quarterback and one I had rated only slightly behind Carr.?

?Gholston has excited people. Those kinds of players, those attacking, outside-linebacker/defensive-end types, are going to help you right away.?

?The OT spot is strong at the top with Smith, a former tight end who is supremely athletic and exactly what you want in a left tackle: someone you can count on to protect the blind side of your quarterback.? (Jason Smith to the Rams)

?He will be an excellent NFL quarterback.? (Andre Ware)

?Druckenmiller is by far the best QB in the draft, and should have gone in the top ten.?

?J.J. Stokes is a sure thing. A future All-Pro.?

?It?s not a bad pick for the Hawks, especially since Curry was the No. 1 player on my board.? (Aaron Curry)

?His attitude will be an asset in the NFL and give him a mental advantage over [other players in his draft class].? (Ryan Leaf, who he said would 100% be better than Peyton Manning)

Them why did you mock him to us in the 2nd? Does he have some serous character flaws? Maybe an injury mayhew didn't know about? Please share with us oh enlightened dumbass....why did you have him falling an entire round?

GMs around the league gave him late 1st. All the mocks were wrong about him. Mocks mean nothing.

Laken, Ramirez, 5th and future 5th in the end for 28. That is great value.
Abdullah worth 54 clearly
Carter worth 80 and a free 5th( which we got from Denver).
Wright worth a future 3rd (valued at 4th round).
Three late round picks were fine.

he is paid to give his opinion for everyone to see and hear. For every one of those crazy quotes that he has been wrong on, there is a similar miss by every GM in the league. Those GMs have teams of scouts working for them...I doubt Kiper does. He is probably as good of a talent evaluator as most guys on an NFL staff...he just gives us the quotes on TV.

We filled our 3 depth needs and starting LG need with four good draft picks. Mayhew gets praised for needs and value.

This team is holeless.

Actually, Kiper has a massive staff working for him. They had the "behind the scenes" on ESPN about a decade ago. He' got unpaid interns by the dozens breaking down film and preparing his teleprompter.

Maybe I just don't care anymore, but does anyone know how accurate these immediate post-draft analyses are? I vaguely recall the Lions getting praised in the past for picks that never amounted to anything.

I prefer the wait and see method, but then again if everyone else did the same there would be nothing to talk about.

Reading all this talk about "draft value", it's just tiresome. This season couldn't get here soon enough.

I don't know Mitch. I'm pretty happy with this draft overall. Credit for that goes to Mayhew.

It's really hard to praise him because honestly we have no idea how they turn out. I'll praise him or call him out after we find out what each pick does..

Filling needs and value (at the time) get a grade. A+
How they actually perform is 2 years down the line.

That makes sense. Still...he and his interns are just about as good as most NFL teams. The only difference is his quotes are heard by all...nobody hears what the NFL guys are saying behind the scenes. I'm sure somebody in the SD war room said "Ryan Leaf....we have our franchise QB for the next 10 years!"

Was always suspicious as to how he knew so much about some 7th rounder from a middle-of-nowhere D3 school.

An A+ grade is basically saying every pick is an A+. Homer to a tee.

Lions have a good player at every starting position. Fact.

Deep at RB,TE,OG/C,DT,DE,LB,CB outside, CB nickel, safety

Maybe deep at WR (depending on Fuller, TJ Jones and Broyles development/health), OT (depending on Lucas)

Not deep. Backup QB but the guys know the system and Dan O won with Caldwell.

There is nothing to complain about this team right now. Nothing.

Round 1-4 are weighted more. I gave them all A+. Round 5-7 really don't matter but all filled a need. A. Correct value, correct needs. Every pick. A+

How they play. TBD.

KR?

I'm agreeing more with LKP on this one, must be the kool aid.

You have to agree with me. There is no position you can really complain about too much. You could see coming into the draft we would get 3-4 guys and that is all this team needed for depth.

WR/OT have backup talent too.

Yes we will have injuries but so will other teams.
What happens to Pack when Mike Daniels and Sitton go down. Or Bears with McPhee and Bushrod. Or Vikings with Harrison Smith and Linval Joseph.

It's a different combo for everyone every year. The Lions have depth and the players to overcome injury.

Oh and 2016, 35 million under the cap right now and two really good comp picks (9-10 picks in that draft).

Mayhew deserves tons of praise.

The problem is we'll calling OL, RB, or whatever improved when we have no idea how they preform. And we're calling the TE's good when none of them did a thing last year. I'm holding off on my criticism this season but man..are we still counting on Broyles?
