Lions hire Darrell Bevell as OC

I haven’t given up on Patrica. Why is Bevell such a bad hire? Didn’t he coach in multiple playoff games and two Super Bowls going 1-1? Hopefully he learned from any mistakes. I am positive he is better then Jbc or Linehan. Draft well and turn it around. The defense had its moments last year where it looked like they learning Patrica by seasons end. Now granted he is the coach that didn’t have his team ready for the Jets and 49ers but hopefully Quinn hits most of his drafts and we make the playoffs next season!

Teams Bevell was on. What is really wrong with this ? These records I will take.

2000...Packers 9-7. (Offensive assistant).
2001...Packers 12-4 (Offensive assistant). {1-1}.
2002...Packers 12-4 (Offensive assistant). {0-1}.
2003...Packers 10-6 (Quarterbacks coach). {1-1} both in ot.
2004...Packers 10-6 (Quarterbacks coach). {0-1}.
2005...Packers 4-12 (Quarterbacks coach).
2006...Vikings 6-10 (OC.
2007...Vikings 8-8. (OC).
2008...Vikings 10-6 (OC). {0-1}
2009...Vikings 12-4 (OC). {1-1 playoffs} lost in ot in nfc title game.
2010...Vikings 6-10 (OC).
2011....Seahawks 7-9 (OC).
2012...Seahawks 11-5 (OC). {1-1} playoffs.
2013...Seahawks 13-3 (OC). {3-0} won SB.
2014...Seahawks 12-4 (OC). {2-1} Lost SB.
2015...Seahawks 10-6) OC). {1-1} playoffs.

I have no problem with him. Though it's hard to compare AR and RW with Matty. It's like giving credit to Caldwell when he worked while when he had Peyton Manning.

Stafford is not immobile but he isn't exactly a threat to run with the ball on every drive either, and he seems to have had lost the ability to engineer 4th quarter comebacks, as well as bombs away with multiple 40+ yd passes in a game. He also seems more loathe to pass in tight or esp multiple coverage, and after CJ left, he can't throw the ball 3+ feet over covered receivers' heads and expect any to come down with it. Whether Bevell will be able to design plays that Matt can make, be creative enough to confuse defenses, and has a WR and/or TE who can be counted on for YAC, remains to be seen. Can Tate III be signed as a FA? Not expecting him to be as good as he was a couple of seasons ago, but with a more balanced run/pass attack, he shouldn't have to be.

I would prefer that the Lions go almost entirely on D in the draft, which means that they will need to sign a FA RB to complement and spell KJ for their new OC's scheme, unless they were to decide that ZZ can fill it...but I would hope not. A slot receiver, TE, and either resign Lang, who seems to giving every indication that he really wants to remain a Lion and might be had for a team-friendly deal of a year or two....or replace him on the oline through FA as well. Unfortunately the O can't be ignored.

Blount was mostly ineffective and a disappointment, but that could be due in part to JBC's predictable playcalling. Of all the Lions' divisional opponents, I would guess that the Packers are on the downslide, and are closing in on a post-ARod rebuild. They aren't very likely to hit top 15, much less elite QB paydirt 3 consecutive times w/o an intervening gap of some length. They could do a Vikings and sign a vet QB FA, but of all the NFCN franchises only Minny frequently does that, and its not very often a long-term solution for them.

Lions will have a cellar-dweller schedule, save the 6 games vs division. Even with a new OC and scheme, and with some luck, few if any key injuries of more than a few games of length, they shouldn't have any other excuses for an 8-8 or worse record next season.

So if they get to 9-7 it's fine. They could win 10 but if they lose a playoff game it's failure.

9-7 should be the minimum, and even @10-6, they still might be the #6 and a WC seed playing a road game vs the #3 seed who had a tougher season schedule in the NFC playoffs. Disappointing but dunno if that could be considered failure. Not making the playoffs and/or going 8-8 or worse would certainly be.

1991, 1957 - It would be a failure. The problem with this team & fan base, mediocre is okay.

Lions need to and will win multiple playoff games

Healthy good DE and CB2. All they need.

1958-62 was pre-WCF ownership. 2014+ is post-WCF. Never bought into the Bobby Layne 50 year "curse" that should have ended by Stafford's rookie season, but I did believe that WCF was one of, if not the absolute worst owner of an NFL franchise in history.

Maybe it will take another owner of the Lions besides the Fords to finally win some playoff games and eventually make a SB appearance, but hopefully they will before Stafford gets replaced or the franchise is sold, whichever would/could come first.

Ford kids are being more involved it seems. They gave the axe to Mayhew after poor 2015 (great 2014) and allowed Caldwell gone at back to back 9-7. They spend in free agency and don't accept mediocrity. They are just getting mediocrity still for various reasons. Injuries were big in 2018 season but execution could be more

Regardless, we need playoff wins. Not 9-7 or 10-6 one and out seasons. Ford isn't close to being the worse owner is sports. And even some bad ones had won things.

I posted in NFL history, not all sports.

Still disagree. There have been some really bad owners. We've liked GM's he hired.. I wish we had a thread when Millen got hired. A lot of positive that were said about that.

How could that have happened?

Even the late ESPN team messageboards format was in its infancy back then...lol.

I wanted the Lions to give interim coach Gary Moeller a shot @ HC for their team, and wasn't thrilled about WCF making the neophyte Millen GM and franchise president.

There isn't even ONE other NFL franchise with fewer playoff wins than WCF era Lions, except for technically the newer Browns, and even while they were still in CLE with Art Modell as owner before being moved to BAL and winning a SB as the Ravens, they had more playoff wins.

Fan satisfaction or dissatisfaction really doesn't enter into whether an owner and his/her franchise sucks ass or not, only their record of overall success or abject failure does that.

WCF problem was nepotism with Russ Thomas and Millen.

Martha has been giving people the axe much quicker than WCF ever would. We'll see how long Quinn lasts. Needs to win this next year.

It's not the owner.

Nepotism is being preferential to one's family members and relations.

WCF's biggest issue was retaining, renewing, and extending the contracts of GMs who had demonstrated incompetence and indifference @ their jobs. I didn't fault him initially for his choices as new hires, except in the case of Matt Millen, who had zero NFL background (outside of playing pro-football @ a stud level), for 5 freaking years, then pissing off nearly their entire fanbase by giving him yet another 5 year contract...that was one of the worst of the worst decisions by any NFL owner.

Maybe it didn't. Nonetheless, I bet many were happy about the Millen hire. Point is we get excited about certain hires and it never seems to works out. I doubt a new owner is suddenly going to hire the perfect GM.
