Lions hire Darrell Bevell as OC

Matt Patricia looked at OC candidates he struggled against defensively.
A little intel into what the Lions? offensive coordinator search looked like.

It?s been nearly an entire month since we?ve heard from Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia, and the team has gone through some important changes since he?s last addressed the media. Most notably, the team has a new special teams coordinator and a new offensive coordinator.

The hiring of Darrell Bevell to coach up the offense may be one of the most important moves Patricia will make all offseason, but aside from a short explanation from general manager Bob Quinn, we don?t have much information on how the Lions head coach came to the conclusion that Bevell was their guy.

However, MMQB?s Albert Breer joined Tori Petry at the Senior Bowl this week and dropped a little interesting nugget about Patricia?s coaching search.

Webvideo Tori Petry caught up with Albert Breer in Mobile to get his take on the Lions' 2018 season and their new offensive coordinator hire in Darrell Bevell.

?What I was impressed with, with what Matt (Patricia) did was it really looked to me?and you sort of heard this a little bit, too?he was looking at guys who he had trouble with as a defensive coach,? Breer said.

Breer was also the reporter that noted Lions offensive line coach Jeff Davidson was in on coordinator interviews, so it appears he?s one of the very few who had a little access to the behind-the-scenes look at Detroit?s offensive coordinator search. And while this isn?t exactly a bombshell, it?s a nice look at Patricia?s methods.

So he was looking for a guy that bested him vs this D? Interesting approach.

I just thought it was an interesting approach.

Meh. Maybe. Quinn said they were looking for a guy that's had multiple schemes in the past and Bevel fit the bill. Threw a ton with Green Bay and had a run first mentality with Minnesota and Seattle. Bevel will recognize the strengths of this offense and capitalize. Stafford, Golladay, MJ and Kerryon will be the obvious choices. Now go find a TE and another slot WR and this offense should be crisp...

Poor Jimmy Graham. Bevell already killed his career once! Lol

One real bad yr in Seattle in 2015. Eighteen total TDs in 3 yrs. Why is that on Bevel? If Graham was a Lion those 3 yrs it would be on Stafford, right? Lol.
For the record, I want nothing to do with Jimmy Graham. He's on the wrong side of 30 and all it would be is a bitchfest about how Stafford is destroying Graham's legacy. Graham was dogshit in Green Bay last yr with arguably the best QB in the NFL. I have no faith that he would rejuvenate his career here in Detroit and that's not on Stafford. I just think JG is done. Go get a young guy to take over in Detroit. Fuck these 30+ yr old washed up players....

agreed on his production as of late...hes not worth it. But id argue he went from NO catching like 80+ balls a year...every year. To catching like 50-60. Its basically due to scheme which is on Bevell....they like to run the ball 60% of the time. Brees was chucking it 50 times a game. Regardless...his time has passed.
