Lions signed DE Israel Idonije

One thing you have to say is that this will be a completely different looking defense this coming year. With the exception of Suh and Fairley, of course. I expect those two to have monster seasons with the improvement of the ends.

Almost a complete overhaul after 4 abhorrent defensive seasons under Schwartz. That's what you need to do. Fix what ain't working. I think they have.

agreed....the fact the dline was supposively the "strength of our team" the last couple years was a joke. I think we significantly upgraded there. Both OLBs and a safety still need to be upgraded but for the most part the D looks significantly better.....and those positions are rather easily upgraded in draft and FA.

It was a strength in 2010/2011. It wasn't perfect but the pass rush really helped the Lions. 14 short fields and 7 defenisve scores in 2011 was HUGE and 2010 they brought the pass rush well.

2012 it became a weakness with the same exact players. This can happen. Players play can vary from year to year and it's not a linear progression or regresssion always. It can be in flux up or down. The flaws stayed (run D) and the pass rush went away from all 4 DEs. Maybe because the leugue figured out how to defend Avril/Young/Jackson better and exploit KVB more. So Mayhew smartly changed it up at DE for hopefully both run defense and pass rush. I'll take just the pass rush but if run D improves too, look out.

Will Idonije start this year? He was good last year.

Ansah/ Suh/ Fairley/ Idonije looks good to me.

If the DTs can refocus on their play vs run instead of the glory in sacking the QB, that would be great. I know, I know, leave the run D to the LBs, but I would much prefer playing vs run on way to the QB to become something put into effective practice instead of lip service. This line can be top 5 vs both run and pass if they refocus. It has been way too long since the lions D could be counted on to stop the run.

Its why they drafted guys like Ansah and Taylor. Also, going after guys like Idonije and Jones in FA. They got MUCH bigger up front and by doing so, they should be able to play the run better...

Burleson tweeted a picture of the rooks. Taylor looks like a fucking monster. He is huge!

Israel Idonije's one-year deal with the Lions is worth $840,000, and includes $485,000 in guaranteed money.

Idonije can earn $65,000 in bonuses for a potential total of $905,000. Because he was signed for the veteran's minimum, Idonije's cap hit is only $620,000. Compare that to what we'd have to pay Avril, and then compare production, what a sweet fucking deal.

It would be an A if they got a legitimate starting OT in the offseason. Stafford will be out by week 6.

/Hughes'd

/I'm actually serious

hey I thought ive been pretty kind giving mayhew *cough Xanders cough* credit for his offseason lol

But I agree with Diggler....entire season depends on how the oline comes together. With Crayola at the anchor, Reiff being an unknown at LT, a rookie at RG and a hot mess at RT....it could get ugly. Any line with Crayola in the middle will suck at run blocking.

In 2012, Backus and Reiff combined for 1 sack, 5 hits, and 39 QB hurries, and Gosder had 4 sacks, 7 hits and 27 hurries, for a total of 5 sacks, 12 hits and 66 hurries in 740 passing attempts from Stafford/Hill.

In 2011, Backus and Hilliard combined for 7 sacks, 4 hits and 36 hurries at LT. Gosder/Hilliard combined for 10 sacks, 19 hits and 28 hurries in the regular season. The total was 17 sacks, 23 hits and 74 hurries in 666 pass attempts from Stafford/Hill, which was much worse than 2012 with less attempts. This is due to Gosder playing much better in 2012 in a contract year and Backus having a rough start in 2011.

We've gotten away with poor tackle play before. That's 12 more sacks caused by OTs, 11more QB hits cause by OTs and 8 more hurries in 2011 with a 10-6 record.

The interior of Detroit?s Offensive Line was made of the same personnel (Sims, Raiola, Peterman) the last 2 years. 2011 they allowed only 7 sacks, 12 QB hits, and 34 hurries, protecting Stafford well despite poor tackle protection at times in 666 attempts. In 2012, Detroit?s interior allowed 8 sacks, 7 hits, and 74 hurries (40 more than the prior year) in 740 attempts.

Peterman sucking in 2012 caused worse damage than the tackles sucking in 2011. Come on Warford.

ive never complained about the pass pro although anytime raoila gets bull rushed he flies backwards causing staff to step to the side and fling it sidearm 10 yards over someones head. Run blocking will be awful yet again unless Warford is some sort of godsend and can not only take on his assignment but also help with crayolas.

I have to say I disagree with your run blocking assessment. I think it will be much improved. Peterman was terrible. Raiola has always been an average run blocker and Gosder was the worst run blocker I think I have ever seen at right tackle. Hilliard or Fox and Warford will improve the amount of push we get.

If I dealt in "should be" or "will be in the future" I'd be lkp. Unfortunately I'm a realist and the fact is we have no idea how fox hilliard or warford will be, we don't know how reiff will fare at lt and we do know crayola is garbage.

Nice low bar for improvement. Reiff, sims can run block. I have seen it. Raiola at least bulked up and warlord has the size and talent. I am more confident in the new guys compared to gosder peterman and Backus returning for run blocking. Unknown yes but you can easily have more confidence in the new guys over known sucky run blockers

But our Oline has been criticized non-stop. At least theres some new blood in there now. Thats how i look at it.....
