I really don't understand the fascination with these "milestones"

What else is there to pay attention to with this team? Although I fully believe his contract and less than replacement level production is a big reason the teams rebuild is stalled.

Maybe in the past but right now most of the team only wish they could be Miggy, 1st in average (starters) and 2nd OPS.

Tom, because this is baseball. Baseball, stats, milestones go hand in hand in hand. When I was a kid my Dad used to tell me "if you studied your school work as much as those baseball stats you'd get straight a's." I sure I wasn't alone in that..

Curious Tom did you start watching baseball as a kid or later in life?

I used to hand write out and update all the tigers states after each game on paper in a notebook back in the early 80's 84 was a blast. I could rattle off any stat for any current tiger player at that time on any given day with up to date numbers after every game to anyone that asked. Ate, Spelt and Drank the tigers back then.

I didn't start really paying attention until 1984. That year is what got me started as a Tigers fan. I was 16 at the time. I didn't start following the Tigers closely until later in life...probably when I was 30 or so.

Me and my friend would do that for Intellivision baseball. We'd pretend the SS , for example, was Ozzie Smith and write down his stats after each at bat or play in the field. And later Micro league baseball and later Earl Weaver baseball. They had fake names so we'd input real names of the best seasons of players from each franchise. We spent days and days looking through the Encyclopedia of Baseball. Pure joy.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Miguel Cabrera has been one of the few bright spots this year because of his quest for 3,000 hits and continued climb up the offensive ladder of MLB history. When his contract expires at the end of 2023, he could conceivably rank as high as #18 in this most prestigious hits club.

Miggy has also reached 2 other elite hitting heights in which the only other members are Hank Aaron and Albert Pujols. In the other category, it?s just Hank and Miggy.

However, Miggy is now 39 years old. Age and injury have slowed him down significantly. He no longer hits regularly for power and is very slow around the base paths.

A well-respected national analysis earlier in the week pointed out that Miggy ranks near the bottom of DHs and hits below average for the purpose of this position. Some argue that by playing him, it restricts the team?s ability to build a better roster and be flexible enough to win more games.

For the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Cabrera is owed a guaranteed $64 million.
But the Tigers must also pay a buyout which is an additional $8 mill.

On the other hand, Miggy has the ability to achieve lofty, historic goals by still playing. Goals that will make him the last player for many decades to achieve them. Goals that will put the Tigers in the history pages of MLB.

And he is still the fans? favorite player and remaining face of the franchise. More people come to games because of his name recognition.

So how should the Tigers handle this dilemma?

Should they allow Miggy to finish out his contract for all the reasons listed above?

Or should they seek to buy him out at the end of the 2022 season?

Is it more important for him to move up the history ladder or is the priority on the team being able to move forward and progress in their rebuild? Will this team be ready to compete in 2023?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

What should the Tigers do about Miguel Cabrera after this season?

1. Allow him to finish out his contract which ends after the 2023 season.

2. Buy out his contract after this season.
