Minicamp notes

He just had surgery. Mid may

So, the dude was release because Caldwell didn't have any use for him. I guess when someone does sign him, some stupid team..he'll put up monster numbers. Your boy.

If he's had some condition since high school, he has clearly learned how to play it seeing as how he's parlayed himself into getting an NFL gig. I don't buy his injury as a reason to suddenly release him. If he was that good, the Lions would have been patient with him, seeing as how their CB depth is horrible.

Their cb depth is good. If he can't play this season and they want cap room for ebron, then he gets cut. It's a very bad injury with late surgery.

So condition ssince high school means mayhew resigns him twice and pisses away millions just so he can release him. what a dumb fuck of a gm we have...

Went to college, drafted by the Falcons, played with the Lions for a handful of seasons. Why is Mayhew a dumb fuck? Stop

Well at least we won't be able to blame poor CB play on injuries if they suck. Guess it will have to be bad luck then.

I'm glad he's gone. We knew Houston's ceiling and it had come and gone. I want to find out how good everyone not named Mathis/Houston is. Will be exciting.

Fify.

There is a difference between one CB injuryand both Mathis/Slay getting hurt for long periods of time. Good depth covers one guy. Vaughn/Greenwood can cover Mathis or Slay going down.

Greenwood covered Houston and Mathis last year well. Mathis covered Slay's problems. Mathis covered Houston well. Mathis covered Bentley. Carey didn't cover Bentley due to Mathis covering Slay. When you get to Carey at nickel then it's too many injuries. Gomes didn't cover Quin due to Carey being busy covering Bentley. Maybe Lawson fixes that.

The depth problems were Carey at nickel duet to muliple CBs switched or hurt, Gomes at safety due to the same and Durham on the outside due to Burleson hurt. With Lawson, Tate(durable) and Ebron that may not be the case. Plus Ogletree has a better shot instead of learning on the fly in October.

I'm with ya. Gonna be a make or break year for Green, Greenwood, and Bentley. Bet they're chomping at the bit for some real playing time. Probably most excited about seeing what this secondary can do than anything else. Staffords reworked footwork and new weapons, and Fairleys game ready physique have also got me revved about the season. Should be a good one.

Ihedigbo on Detroit's d. Coming from a guy that played with that Baltimore defense, this is encouraging

Safety James Ihedigbo: Lions' defense plays like lions

By*Carlos Monarrez*

James Ihedigbo and Bernard Pollard were safeties on the Baltimore Ravens’ Super Bowl championship team two seasons ago.

Pollard joined the Tennessee Titans last year, and Ihedigbo joined the Lions this year. They have new defensive coordinators this season: Ray Horton in Tennessee and Teryl Austin in Detroit. But Pollard said he already has seen a dramatic improvement in his defense’s mentality.

“We were German shepherds in the training phase, but for some reason we transformed to pit bulls, to rottweilers,” Pollard told the team’s website. “Preferably, I want to be a lion, but there’s no lions over here, but I’ve got the heart.”

Well, Ihedigbo has an answer for Pollard. He said by name and spirit, Detroit’s defense is exactly what it should be.

“I mean, we’re lions,” Ihedigbo said. “That’s who we are. Play like a lion every day.

“You know, I love B.P. He’s a great guy, a great friend, and he’s always going to bring that mentality. But this defense, that’s what we’re about: playing aggressive, in-your-face defense, and you’re going to have to deal with us. That’s our mind-set. You’re going to have to deal with us come Sundays, and that’s what we’re preparing for.”

The Lions’ defense ranked 15th in points allowed last season. The Titans ranked 16th. It will be interesting to see how much new coaches, new players and any animalistic behavior improve that for either team.

This article is troubling in just one sense. No mentioning of Chris Greenwood whatsoever. Do you guys take it as him not playing this year, or the Lions just not knowing if he's going to be ready by the seasons start? I just don't see Mathis staying healthy for 16+ games at the age of 34.

I wouldn't put any hope in him. He was drafted because of his height, speed etc not by skill and hasn't done jack shit yet. Maybe he can turn into a nice backup but I expect him to be gone after the year..

I like the talk coming out of camp about Cassius Vaughn. Hopefully he isn't like all the other off season all stars like we've had before and can actually play well during the season.

He was released due to injury. It's the only reason

He was released cause mayhew caught wind that you thought he was a good #1 cb. Even mayhew knows to do the opposite of everything you say cause youre always wrong about EVERY single thing.....

I've never been wrong. He was cut due to injury and you know it.

"The Lions classified the cut as a failed physical."

Yep injury

there are a lot of guys on the team that would fail their physical right now...why didn't the Lions release all of them? The failed physical is just an excuse to cut him. It is a combo of his salary, his ability and his injuries. Believe me...if he were truly a #1 type CB he would still be a Lion.

Alot of those guys had surgery a few months ago. Houston was mid May. This is mainly injury and some cap room.

Chris Greenwood just had another hernia surgery, has he been released? So basically they're keeping an injured and unproven cb that has played very few downs in the nfl over an injured #1 corner? I think not. Given that you said Chris Houston would have a bounce back season this year and he got shit canned, doesn't that make you wrong? Am I right, or am I right?
