Mortensen reporting Suh to Dolphins

Even so, restructuring will still add more money to some of his high cap numbers in the later years.

looking at their cap situation in 2016 Mike Wallace is the next highest with a $13.7M hit in 2016. Cut him and only $4.4M dead and $9.3M cap savings. He is done and will be cut. Other than Suh they don't really have any big $ players for 2016. Maybe the Phins know this and want to get a bunch of his cap hit done and over with in one year.

Oh and CJ will turn 34 a month into his currently scheduled last season with the Lions.

PFF did a study on WR age
https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/08/27/age-of-decline-wr/

Sharp decline at 35+, we'll see how CJ fairs.... Concerned about his recent injuries

Here is the problem with CJ. His cap number will be $24M next year. The Lions will be tempted to re-structure but that will probably be a long term mistake. I would like to see them leave it alone and give them a good option to cut him prior to the 2017 season. That would save them $16.5M and only $5.5M in dead $$

As I mentioned, they'll probably restructure then cut him, screwing themselves in the process... Seems like a typical Lions move.

It's doesn't screw them. It gives them more 2016 cap space instead of 2017 cap space. Cap rises every year so you can take on the brunt of dead money in 2017 while enjoying more space in 2016.

We only have 102 million committed for 2016. Well under 143 (which will rise). Add 12 million for 14 draft picks (would put us 47 under contract). 3 million more gets you to the top 53. That's 26 million in space (less whoever we sign long term this offseason). 117 million plus a cap rise, plus any carryover from this year. We could have over 30 million in space (less whoever we sign long term this offseason).

Keeping Levy, Reiff and Whithead pretty easy. Two drafts. Plenty to spend on what we want, including a Ngata extension (or franchise if he has a regular DT franchise number based on him only counting 8.5 million for us now).

Other teams will have plenty of cap space too in 2016. Rising caps will likely lead to higher contract values, I'm concerned that keeping around players with expiring rookie contracts will not be so easy.

The market didn't go crazy other than Suh and McCourty so far. Reiff, Levy, Warford shouldn't be a problem. Slay we'll see. Reiff and Ansah we have 5th year options too.

$46.5M for CJ and Staff in 2016? I'll assume the cap goes up to $150 for 2016, that means those 2 will account for very close to 1/3 of the available cap space in 2016. :(

Lions only have 105 committed including those 2 big contacts. 11 million for 13 draft picks. Another 3 million to get to the top 51. Another 1.8 for the top 53 and PS. Plenty of room.

We could have close to 30 million or over 30 million in space next year.

I think I missed the part there where we re-sign all our FAs for vet min or something.

Don't they have several contracts up for renewal? Or due to fact they no longer have anyone from 2010 and 2011 drafts maybe they don't. Lol

Levy and Ansah aren't going to be cheap. I don't expect the Lions to keep them both.

We will have almost 30 million in cap space. Levy and Ansah won't take up anywhere close to 30 million. Especially in year 1 of the deal. And with the top 51, alot will be back very cheap.

We can 5th year option Reiff too. Leaving just Levy.

Lions are in great cap shape.

well shit, they have so much flexibility in their cap, they need to go get AP. restructure staff and cj, then offer Ngata an extension with lower hit this year but good G-money for incentive and offer big G-money to AP to also take a lower salary this year. they can do it, AND get Blalock too. make it happen Mayhew!!!

Staff+CJ+Tate+AP+sufficient OL+Austin D=SB champions!!!!

of course, they still have Lombardi as OC. could he screw up an offense that has AP, CJ, and Tate? Oh, I'm forgetting to add in Ebron too...my bad. Could Lombardi still screw that up???

Until someone else pays more and then you call the other teams "stupid". The cap doesn't go up just for the Lions, you keep forgetting this.

That's one way to look at it. Another way is:

There are 21 teams with more cap space overall
We have the 6th most money on per player basis (Committed/Players signed)

We only have 10 starters signed out of 22:
Offense:
CJ
Staff
Tate
Warford
Bell
Ebron
Swanson

Defense:
Quinn
Ansah
Slay

The final 3 on offense could be considered questions marks as Starters, did not include Van Noy as a starter on defense. So possibly only 7-8 starters signed.

Yea we aren't screwed, but we aren't sitting pretty.
