Mortensen reporting Suh to Dolphins

That's one way to look at it. Another way is:

There are 21 teams with more cap space overall
We have the 6th most money on per player basis (Committed/Players signed)

We only have 10 starters signed out of 22:
Offense:
CJ
Staff
Tate
Warford
Bell
Ebron
Swanson

Defense:
Quinn
Ansah
Slay

The final 3 on offense could be considered questions marks as Starters, did not include Van Noy as a starter on defense. So possibly only 7-8 starters signed.

Yea we aren't screwed, but we aren't sitting pretty.

Two drafts. That's a couple more starters cheap. 30 million in space you can do what you want.

That committed amount for 2016, includes Tulloch and Waddle/Lucas. Two more starters. Van Noy could replace Whithead (who becomes a free agent). So 3 starters. Up to 13.

So 13 starters, let's say 4 from the two drafts to be conservative. 17 out of 22. 30 million in space.

Plus Levy and Ngata could easily be extended this offseason and give us more space this offseason actually (especially Ngata). And we can give Reiff 5th year option.

So that's 20 of 22 starters with probably around 20 million in cap space left. With Suh gone, there is no cap worries even with Stafford and Calvin. I bet Stafford gets a new long term deal prior to 2016 anyway.

We had 0 starters from the Draft in 2014 in the 2014 season. So i wouldn't say 4 is conservative.

Ebron a starter and did this year. Most snaps and targets. Swanson is now. Van Noy could be year 3 like Whitehead was year 3. So 3 starters from 2014.

4 is conservative over 2 drafts. Year 2 for the 2015 guys too in 2016. Surely they start by then. We might have 6 starters from those drafts.

We have 0 players still on the roster from the 2010 and 2011 drafts.

meh, who needs players.

9 gms out of 10 will tell you you need to be able to build through the draft. Our douchebag builds thru UDFAs lmao.

You can't spell undrafted free agent without draft. Checkmate atheists.

we honestly get all excited when an UDFA starts like half the year for us, injured the other half, and when he plays he grades out at average at best. yippie.

Google just spit out this gem. Apparently it's Xanders who is responsible for our UDFAs.

It's not exactly a surprise to anyone who knows what a database is.

A database is a collection of data that is able to be queried in a variety of way. But the data is still input by humans, and is still going to be based on scouting reports.

Does it change who they will draft? Of course not. Does it change who they will target after the draft? of course not.

If they need a tackle, they are going to query that database and get the exact same results they would have gotten if a scout had poured over his analogue scouting reports for a while. It happens quicker. It's information at a few keystrokes rather than digging through printouts.

What do you guys think a database can do? Suddenly find a guy no scout knew existed? The data in the database came from the scouts. It's what they know and analyze, type into fields, and reports are generated based on search criteria.

It's not a magic football faery wand that magically find the next Tom Brady.

I know your are in IT and have gotten used to having to ask people "did you try turning it off and turning it back on again" but yes many people know what a database is and does. And yes it does help you pick players when you can query it based on specific field rather than have a pile of yellow legal pads and a dirty cocktail napkins like Mayhew used up until 2012.

Mayhew: Where did that cocktail napkin go with that backup quarterback we liked? What was his name Wilma or something?
Scout: Wilson?
Mayhew: No that doesn't sound right. Fuck it we'll just trade up for Doug Houge.

It can help you quickly find players quickly, but it's not going to change a thing about who you pick. The data is the exact same information scouts used to have in binders... it's just much faster in a query.

Which is exactly what Mayhew said. The database didn't change who they took, it provided them the information faster.

The benefit to a DB like that is going to be after the draft, when teams are going through spreadsheets and notebooks trying to figure out who they still want to talk to and if they were already drafted.

A team with a database is going to spit that information out and be on the phone while other teams are still opening binders up.

And also.. I would hope to hell EVERY team has a database for this by now.

That's the whole point, one which we are in agreement. Xanders = UDFA. Also late in the draft like the 200th pick it's going to help. Hell I have a database for my damn fantasy football team, yes I hope every team has one.

Yep, we agree there. Xanders is the guy behind the UDFAs.

It flatly amazes me that it took the Lions this long to have such a DB. It would take me 15 minutes to design a database that compiled the data on all the combine results, pro days, scouting reports, and could spit out an accumulated grade for each player.

Another week or so to write the PHP, and it would be browser based and accessible from anywhere you have a connection.

I have to wonder how many teams are still using binders and sticky notes in 2015.
