it's not hard to improve on what he's got, the bigger question is by how much. the guys coming from the transfer portal from other schools are transferring for a reason and it's not because they're killing it at the prior school. The guys he's offering out of high school don't have a lot of offers better than MSU (mostly MD, RU, Louisville type kids). The 2021 class is ranked 39th, but not counting 2 star kids it's 3-6 commitments smaller than most top 30 teams AND it's just the first class he's had a full year to recruit as head coach following a horrible season. We'll get a chance to see how good of a coach/player developer he is over the next couple seasons, but the jury is still out.
I think the vast majority of the transfers we took are guys the schools they left really really didn't want to see leave. Walker had 13 rushing TDs last season and is a top tier back. Crouch started in the SEC and was one of his team's best defenders, but his coach got fired. Horst was at a small school, but was an Outland Trophy watch list member. Auburn fans loved Joiner and thought their coach misused him. Carr is young and talented, Purdue didn't want to lose him. Kimbrough started some games last year at Florida. Russo just wanted to play on a bigger stage. Drew Jordan was a key player for Duke and a starter. Brown was one of the best athletes on Minny, they hated losing him, but he's young.
VanSumeren is one who was just told by their staff he didn't fit their mold. Crump and Lowery (DBs) are younger and I don't know why they're transferring. So those 3 maybe weren't really wanted.
Honestly, after Walker and maybe Horst or Jordan, the transfer getting the most buzz is the D2 guy Kendal Brooks at safety. He's a potential starter at safety and looks big and really fast.
Walker, Horst, Crouch, Jordan, Brooks, Kimbrough, and maybe Russo are new starters we got form the portal.
The thing is though, some of these guys have 3 and 4 years of eligibility left, so they're seen more as regular recruits who can take some time to develop.
