MSU Football recruiting

Here are your best 11 QBs in the country. Katin Houser made the list, so did the guy we had next in our list if Houser stuck with Boise, Luther Richeson. Kid gong to Clemson was camp MVP, the rest are in alphabetical order.

Looks like the elite 11 isn't necessarily a great predictor of success but this is definitely an improvement in the caliber of qb we typically recruit - he's our first Elite 11 signee since Joe Boisture in 2009, whoever that is.

Not all of them go onto be great, but most of the first round draft pick QBs the last 20 years were Elite 11 guys.

MSU QB Anthony Russo was an Elite 11 QB in 2015 along with KJ Costello, Shea Patterson, Malik Henry, Felipe Franks, Brandon Peters, Dawayne Haskins, Jacob Eason and Shane Buechele. All quality starters at the Power 5 level.

Houser was probably the most accurate QB there and he's easily got the quickest delivery. Arm strength was top half there. He's got a chance to be great and really seems to have a perfect demeanor for the position. We'll see.

4 star OT, Ryan Baer should be the next to join the class. 4 star DT Alex VanSumeren right after that. VaSumeren was going to visit Clemson, but it looks like staying close to home is a priority for him and he won't visit them now before making his choice.

yeah, but we didn't recruit Russo, who isn't exactly lighting it up. He has a strong arm but he throws a lot of picks. It's been 12 years since we signed a recruit from the E11.

Wikipedia has a good elite 11 page - some of the classes were better than others, obviously. I like Houser's film a lot but I'm not a recruiter so I'm probably only noticing the obvious (arm strength, accuracy downfield, etc). At the HS level it's prob not so much about reading the defense as it is making good throws to receivers that get open. If it is about reading defenses that's not something obvious from film when I'm watching.

What I can see is he's not really a playmaker dual threat guy or at least it's not obvious that he'll be able to extend plays against B1G defenses so my concerns are more about the team around him than they are about him at this point. at the risk of sounding like a broken record, we need to improve up front significantly. We also need to improve at WR - we've had some good possession receivers and some tough kids but seems like it's been awhile since we've had anything close to the groups we had during the Cook and Cousins eras.

WR should be a relative strength, I like the speedy shifty guys we have in Nailor and Reed. Ricky White was really missed when he was hurt last year, I think he can be the guy that can take the top off from defenses. Tre Mosely can be decent, but I think he's got a fairly low ceiling. And then we brought in a bunch of big possession receivers in Fitzpatrick from Louisville, and Maliq Carr ho has already moved to TE. Keon Coleman is an interesting prospect, he's both big and fast and has a swagger, wouldn't surprise me to see him ready to contribute right away, he's certainly physically ready for college. Kam Allen is the freshman who has been turning heads at TE, he should get a ton of reps this year.

The 2022 recruiting class is very interesting for WR. We're being extremely selective. Already have Tyrell Henry who we beat UM out for. Then we added Jaren Glover from Florida who's a possession guy. We have 1 spot left and we're being careful with it, we apparently have cooled on 4 star Antonio Gates Jr. and Kevin Thomas from Philadelphia who came into visit but was 4 inches shorter than his listed height.

Overall, there are some weapons there. RB is the definite strength of the team. It all comes down, like it always does, to O Line play. Kap has a history of turning around bad O Lines quickly, adding Horst as a transfer was big, it allows Jarvis to go back to guard. There are some pieces on the line, it's all up to Kap to get them to average to above average. He's got the rep as one of the best O Line coaches in the country, but ours was flat out putrid in 2019 and stayed bad in 2020, so we'll see. I think Russo wins the starting spot, he's got a ton of arm talent, just tried to fit too many passes into tight spaces at Temple and his WRs were awful.

Offense has been so bad for so long, it's time to show us some life. Coach Kap called it "putrid" last year, so at least he's a realist. He said it was the worst offense he's ever been involved in.

Kenny Walker has been blowing away the staff since he arrived on campus, he now owns most of the weight room records for MSU RBs, he's explosive and faster than advertised. Can't believe we got someone of his quality, he led the country in yards after contact in 2020. Most talented RB we've had since Le'Veon, hopefully he has some holes to run through. So people are excited about him, PFF rated him one of the top 4 returning RBs in the country.

Composite 4 star WR Antonio Gates Jr. has committed to MSU.

3 star DE Chase Carter committed last week.

I am expecting VanSumeren and Baer to commit to MSU this week, but they're on their own timeline.

Interesting developments. So Ryan Baer strongly hinted he was committing to MSU, now he's told people he's picking Pitt because he wanted a clearer path to play early. Oh well, weird though, it's not like MSU is loaded at tackle, but I think he wants to play as a freshman.

In good news, 4 star safety Jaden Mangham was supposed to commit to WVU yesterday, but now he's trending MSU after visiting this weekend. Not a lock or anything, but the news seems good.

We've had 3 linemen get drafted in the last 10 years. Ouch, that can't help recruiting. It's interesting though that a 4-star kid in the top 30 at his position can't even get a look from his home-state school. This kid would be a top get for us and Ohio State isn't even interested. Must be nice.

It was a weird recruitment, his family was very involved. Seems like he sees Horst on the Outland Trophy list and knows he'll be here a couple years and sees a couple guys that would be in front of him to start. He wants to play as a freshman. I think Braden Miller is close to the same level prospect and we beat out some better competition for Miller than we would have for Baer even though Miller is lower ranked. Miller was U of M's top choice at tackle and they took some Canadian kid when Miller picked MSU.

And it sounds like Jaden Mangham to MSU is a done deal, big recruiting win. 6-3, 185 lb safety with speed, top 300 kid in the composite.

Kiyaunta Goodwin is a near 5 star OT committed to Kentucky, he's visited MSU twice on his own dime and is giving us an official visit this Fall. There's a decent chance for a flip here, so we might not be done at OT. 53rd ranked player in the country.

I never understand when 5 and high 4 star football recruits sign with Kentucky - maybe for a year or 2 after they hired Mark Stoops but it's been long enough now that everyone who didn't already know he was a moron who got the job because of his last name has figured it out by now.

I doubt Goodwin ends up at Kentucky. He committed when he was on TV and it seemed he wasn't really ready to commit.

In state, right now I think it's a coin flip with Dillon Tatum between us and U of M. I think he likes MSU more, but U of M has his high school coach hired in Ron Bellamy. Michael Williams is another 4 star prospect who would commit to MSU today, but he was hurt last season and MSU wants to see some senior film before accepting his commitment. With Gates, and Vansumeren already in the fold, Mangham to join them in the next sday or so, Tatum a coin flip, and Williams a very real possibility, there's a chance MSU lands 5 of the top 8 players in the state. 2 of the top 8 left the state, and the #1 player in the state is a Michigan legacy and picked them.

5 of the top 8 would be a fairly dominant year of instate recruiting for Tucker.

Jaden Mangham goes Green. 4 star safety with offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State, Penn State, Michigan, Miami Fl, and Oregon. Big time get, 6-3, 185 lb safety with good speed and cover ability.

Also, Rivals updated their rankings, Katin Houser now a 4 star and #105 overall in the country. 247 has him at 246th overall and a 4 star. ESPN has him as a low 4 star.

Composite should be updated later today, but it should be around top 200ish.

he's apparently in the elite 11 but none of the recruiting sites has him in the top 15 QBs for his class. seems a bit odd.

He's the #14 composite QB now, will be 10th on Rivals.

Houser is a good sign that this staff can ID talent really well. We went all in on Duffy, but were always almost as high on Houser. He was basically a mid 3 star and the day Duffy told us no Houser was our #1 guy. We told 4 star Manchiol during his visit we wouldn't accept his commitment when he tried to commit because we needed an answer from Houser first. Manchiol then committed to WVU. We slow played 4 stars Martin and Denegal (who committed to UM) because we liked Houser a lot more. Denegal wanted to commit to MSU long ago, but he was never really an option for the staff, if Houser has stuck with Boise, the next guy was 3 star Luther Richeson who also showed out at the Elite 11 and was named to the top QB list there with Houser.

Now Houser blew up, he was one of the top 5 QBs at the Elite 11 according to some. He's all the sudden a program changing QB talent. 247 is a little lower on him mainly because he was injured most of his sophomore year, and then his junior year he split snaps with another elite QB prospect at Don Bosco Prep in CA who is the #1 high school football team in the nation. And it was a shortened season for them last year, so he didn't even throw for 800 yards. 247 is on record that if he has a good senior season he'll be seeing a significant bump from them again.

2021 was the year of the QB for high school recruits. I think the services each show 10 or more QBs in the top 100. Houser is every bit the prospect as any of them. He's as accurate as any and probably has a quicker release than any QB in the country. And his head and demeanor seems cut out for the position. Does he have truly elite arm strength? Probably not, but it's still probably top 10 in the class.

He's composite #217 right now, that's only going to go up as ESPN has yet to update theirs in a while and their writers gushed about him at the Elite 11, they have him a low 4 star, but he should be top 150 for them soon. I think he could end up top 120 in the composite when it's all said and done. If he does, historically, he'll be the highest regarded QB recruit MSU has pulled since Jeff Smoker (5 star). None of this means he'll do jack in college, but at least we're seemingly starting to recruit at a higher level. 4 composite 4 stars in the class and we're going to add 1 or 2 more. But the 2023 class is where you should really see the Tucker difference, we sit very well with a ton of elite guys in 2023.

If Houser had started out as a 4 star, given he plays for one of the top programs in the country, he might honestly be pushing 5 star right now after his Elite 11 showing.

5 star would put him in the top 30 and top 4 QBs - seems like a bit of a stretch.

Pushing 5 star to me means top 60 or 70. Now that Ewers moved to the 2021 class, Houser compares well with the other top few guys in the class. Howard (LSU), Weigman (TAMU), Klubnik (Clemson), and Simpson(Bama). I think he's more accurate with a quicker release than all of those guys, is bigger than all of those guys. Probably doesn't have the arm that maybe Klubnik and Weigman have, but it's right there with Simpson and Howard. Not as mobile as a couple of those guys.

I'm sure there's reasons to keep these guys and a few other guys ahead of Houser and that's fine. But it's splitting hair the difference between the top 10 or so this year. And you never know, Houser could wash out in college, there are no guarantees, but he's one of the top QB recruits in the country, I don't think that's debatable anymore.

Well, this is an interesting development in 4 star Bloomfield Hills S/CB Dillon Tatum, long considered a Michigan lock because Michigan just hired his high school coach this Spring in Ronald Bellamy.

Wiltfong, Trieu, Thind, and Corey Robinson all entered MSU crystal balls for Tatum this afternoon. I knew we were never out of it because he grew u an MSU fan, but this would be a huge recruiting coup to land a kid whose coach just joined UM's staff.

Tatum is committing on the 29th at 7 PM, all crystal ballz on MSU and he skipped his last scheduled visit to UM. Good looking and versatile recruit. Played some offense, but will be a corner/nickel at MSU. 5-11, 190 with 4.48 speed.
