My way too early yardage prediction thread

Basically my argument is Detroit kept the good aspects of their secondary
It is well known DBs grow in year 2.
They made a needed scheme change that fits their personnel

Your argument is they sucked last year (which is inaccurate since they were average). Half the secondary palyers from that is gone, the scheme is different and Slay is no longer a rookie.

That average 2013 Detroit secondary doesn't even exist anymore.

The stats don't back that up though. They were average in every category but YPG.

And in any case, this secondary is very different with Houston and Delmas gone and a scheme change.

And again injured Houston is gone and Ihedigbo can practice unlike Delmas. Scheme change. Slay develops in year 2. Mathis played well. Quin is good. Pass rush is good. LB coverage is good. Top 10 pass D in 2014.
That's for sure because they sucked too. Delmas and Houston. ..

They were 23rd in yards per game, 19th in QBR against and 20th in yards per attempt.

In 2014, Slay will be _BELOW AVERAGE___ (bad, below average, average, good, great)
In 2014, Mathis will be _BELOW AVERAGE___ (bad, below average, average, good, great)
In 2014, Bentley will be _AVERAGE_ (bad, below average, average, good, great)
In 2014, Quin will be _ABOVE AVERAGE__ (bad, below average, average, good, great)
In 2014, Ihedigbo will be _BELOW AVERAGE_ ((bad, below average, average, good, great)
In 2014, LB coverage will be _ABOVE AVERAGE_ (bad, below average, average, good, great)

we have no idea what they WILL be but you seem to think you can predict the future. What I think might happen based on past performances

Comp % (12th). You guys harp on Staffords all the time. Must be important.

TDs allowed (13th)

Int (17th)

3rd down % (1st)

YPA skewed from the big plays. Many were due to injury.
Redzone D (2nd)

Put it all together and it's average. And again like I said, a secondary that doesn't exist anymore.

LOL average pass rush. Quin is good based on past and so is LB coverage. The only leap I'm taking is Slay will be good. But him in the scheme, now with experience and measurables he has, he has the makings of a good CB.

I don't predict the future. I negate your predictions of the future when you say the secondary WILL suck and bash Mayhew for not addressing.

Slay good, Quin good, Bentley/Mathis average, Ihedigbo below average in coverage (good in run support and blitz), LB coverage good. Pass rush good/borderline great.

This adds up to top 10 pass defense.

I never said they will suck. I have always said that they were below average and I don't think they did anything to improve that.

The pass rush was average last year....it might improve but my guess it will stay the same. I did say that Quin and the LB coverage will be above average.

Pass rush was good last year. Top 7 in total pressure. The sacks can come and the new scheme helps that too.

Let's not forget about Nevin Lawson either, whom some say is going to steal Bentleys job from the get go. It's pretty obvious he was drafted because this staff is not sold on Bentley, or do not believe he can stay healthy. Barring injuries, I think this secondary is set, and has depth with Slay, Mathis, Greenwood, Green, Vaughn, Bentley, and Lawson

If the pass rush was good, the LB coverage was good but the total pass defense was below average doesn't that tell you that the secondary was bad?

It tells me the secondary was hurt and Slay was a rookie. This is no longer the case.

Mathis did well (other than picks). Mathis had the 6th lowest comp % allowed in the league last year at CB. He can cover.

Quin did good. Had the lowest QB rating. He is very good in coverage.

Ihedigbo is new and fits this scheme.

Slay can develop. He has the measurables and fits the scheme. I'm excited about this secondary with health and more experience in this scheme, no matter what happened in 2013.

If the secondary is set, then bleh. We are going to be stuck watching corners that cannot be left alone, because they simply don't have the talent to play solid coverage. That "depth" on the team is riddled with players who are average to below average. I don't really consider that depth, that's just bodies. Depth is guys that can step in and contribute.

One more thing, how does one measure how much a team gets QB pressure? That seems like the most pointless stat in the history of stats. Hey, you almost got there!! But not quite... Is there a stat to show if that QB pressure actually did anything?

They do keep track of QBs under pressure. That stat usually is littered with very poor numbers by QBs. Hurries and hits matter alot. Getting a QB off his throwing spot or normal throwing motion is huge. This is a big reason the Lions were the best in 3rd down stop %.

Pressures lead to more turnovers than sacks. Strip sacks only lead to turnovers and that's if they are recovered.

Green and Greenwood have produced with solid and good coverage in their limited time. I consider that good depth. Vaughn is an experienced player with the Colts, a starter for many games. I'd consider that solid depth. It's not just a body.

Slay and Mathis can be left on islands at times, and sometimes they get help. Like most CBs. And if Slay develops and proves to be good, then we may be even more set.

The top comp % under pressure last year was Peyton Manning with 58.1% on 136 attempts.

Your argument is always they were average/good except in this category or that category. That's like saying the QB was good except when he throws it..

I look at every category and make an overall judgment. Some were lower teens, some were upper teens, YPG was 23rd. Screams average to me. Plus there was an injury factor with Houston playing hurt giving up big long TDs.

Based on everything it was average. You people and most of the media look at yards per game. But none of that matters, average or if you think they suck.

The best of the secondary is back, there is a scheme change that fits the personnel, there is more experience and a new starting player was added. We can count on a good LB coverage and good pass rush. Pass rush may be even be improved for several reasons. Scheme, Ansah/Taylor year 2, original starter Jones for Young, more blitzing from non precitable alignments.
