Ngata may not be ready for week 1

He didn't get 10.5 million at 34 like you said. I understand contracts much better than you. He got 4.5 of that this year with the signing bonus

Williams on average gets 7.5 million per year. It's a fact. 10 million per is more accurate for Ngata than 12 per.

Which is what I originally said we should do if he plays well this year. That is the smartest option for the Lions.

The smartest option is pay him his correct value. 10 million per season. Lowers his cap number this year and next year. 2017 dead money of 5 million is nothing. And like you said, the cap rises so we could handle his 2017 number that I gave. Possible to restructure some too in 2017 if needed and he's played well at 33.

3 years 30 million with 10 SB is the smartest option. Then franchise tag. 12 million per last second is a dumb option. They would have to franchise him and have a high cap number temporarily if they can't get a deal done.

Try this a simpler way. He was under contract for two more years

Old deal:
2015 6.4 Million cap hit (5.45 Cash to him)
2016 7.0 Million cap hit (7.00 Cash)
Total 13.4 Cap hit (12.45 cash)
Average 6.7 per year

New Deal:
2015: 6.95 Million Cap hit (9.00 Cash)
2016: 8.0 Million cap hit (6.5 Cash)
2017: 8.3 Million cap hit (6.8 cash)
Total 23.25 Cap hit (22.3 Cash)
Average 7.75 per year.

No matter how you calculate it, they paid an extra 10 million for 1 more year (age 34). They could of let him play out the next two years and saved money.

You ever think why Ngata was traded in the first place? Because the Ravens couldn't get a deal done with him.. He out priced himself with their organization. And yet, Mayhew will get it done, cheap?

LKP? Think.

35 million base + 15 million salary. 50 million over 4 years, 12.5 average. That's if he has a good year this year. If he has a bad injury filled year he get's a lot less. So only reason for Ngata to sign now is if he doesn't think he would be healthy. If he thinks he can play, it's smarter for him to wait it out. There is no reason for Lions to sign him now.

Can probably close to 28 million over the next two years in cash. Better than your scenario where he only gets 20.

These players don't like to play the waiting game though. They like that guarantee of a multi year contract because you never know when you're going to get the next one. Ngata goes out and plays this year on a one year deal and rips his knee, he's done for his career. Get that 2-3 year deal with the guarantee money/signing bonus and they're happy. SIGN HIM NOW.

Maybe he didn`t want to be a Raven anymore. Think that could happen? Lions are an up and coming team with a killer defense and a hungry DC in Austin.

How about he plays a real game in a Lions uniform before the management trips over themselves to offer him a contract?

He needs to play a game in a Lions uniform first to sign him? Why? His injury isn`t career threatening. Oh wait, maybe he forgot how to play football? That`s gotta be it....right? lol

Wasn't his choice. He was traded.. I'm just saying, he knows he's good. Maybe he thinks he has one last good contract .. but we're not getting him cheap unless he has an off year.

I know he was traded, but maybe he didn`t want to play for the Ravens anymore. We don`t know what he`s thinking, it`s all speculation on our part.
And I never said he`s going to be cheap either, but he`s not getting Suh money. He`s still a top 3-5 DT/NT in the game though and will help out this defense tremendously.

I just don`t get it. You guys cry about Suh....he leaves....we acquire a beast to replace him.....you don`t want him re-signed? You`re content with Walker, Reid and Wright as our DTs? BS. You would be yelling bloody murder to Mayhew if he didn`t replace Suh. Ngata is no Suh but he`s the next best thing. He needs to be a Lion for the rest of his career. End of story.

I think guys in Ngatas position can and do wait. This won't be his first big money contract, so giving up potential money for a little extra guaranteed a year early shouldn't be high on his priority list. Already has another 8.5 guaranteed coming his way this year.

Realistically as well even with a injury this year, if he comes back next year and clears are physicals the money will still be there Ben coming off an injury. He's produced enough to get the luxury.

If he's willing to take a discount for future security I'm all about signing him, I think it's worth the injury risk. If he wants market value I say wait it out and see how he produces. Market value per year and the franchise tag will be very similar. So if he stays healthy and produces franchise tag isn't a bad option. Don't have any other high priority FA next year. Think biggest one is inhedigbo (or however it is spelled)

Ravens couldn't pay his huge backloaded cap number. They can pay him 10 per. Think and pay attention

Atkins deal proves ngata should be 10 per season

Hope they get a deal done soon

He has proven to be a top NT. We don't know how he will do in a 4-3. Why pay him top 5 $ to play in a 4-3 if they don't know how effective he will be? They really have him for 2 years at about $20-$21M right now. Why gamble that he will continue to be that top 5 guy if you don't have to?

20 million over 2 is 10 per. Top 3 dt money anyway. Long term deal like I said actually lowers his cap number to 6.5 and 8.5 instead of 8.5 and 12+ tag

right...but you are not locked into next year. They have an out with no salary cap implications and draft pick compensation if they choose not to sign him.

I know he's got the money banked already, but it's always a comfort thing with these guys. I think they should lock him up for around 10-11MIL for a couple more years (3 max) and go from there. And say he does play lights out. His stock has just risen and now you're paying a 32 year old "more" money than you probably wanted to. I just think it's a smarter business move to try and get him a bit cheaper. Not a lot, but just a bit....

And when is Slay and Ansah up for new deals? They're next on the list..

I really don't think he'll just forget how to football by switching to a 4-3. Cmon, man lol. He's a monster. They wouldn't have acquired him if they didn't think he could do it. Austin and Caldwell know this man personally as well. He's worth the risk IMO...

I agree that he will likely be good but we don't know if he will be top 5 good. My only point is the Lions already effectively have him for 2 years with very little risk.

2 years?? I thought we only had him for this year! You sure?

As I stated before...they can franchise him after this season which would be around $12M. So, very little risk on the Lions part. If he is great you franchise him. If he isn't you just let him walk.
