Octavio Dotel

Why is everyone against Dotel? Probably an improvement over Perry and likely not too expensive or long term.
i feel like we're going to overpay for him, especially because at this point he should only face right-handed hitters. id rather upgrade the various holes in our lineup/on the field than overpay for a righty specialist.

Fair enough. I'm thinking that 5 million or so isn't going to tip the balance, but we'll see.

I get that Dotel is a proven reliever with a fairly successful career, unlike Perry who looks to be regressing and not taking the next step up.
(Perry might have been pitching last year without focus because his dad was dealing with cancer. Came out today in a story).

Maybe the reason there is a split on signing Dotel is his age 37/38?
I'm not a real big fan, and that/age has something to do with it, was just hoping for someone else.

it might not tip the balance, but its way too much for a guy who MIGHT give us 1 WAR if we're lucky. he realistically shouldnt get more than $3-3.5 million a year. $3 million would be my choice. its more than he signed for last year and would be on par with how much he would actually contribute.

per Jason Beck on twitter: "#Tigers still 1 of 2 teams in on Dotel. Cards look like the other. Not sure this gets a resolution tonight."

I cannot believe we are frontrunners for this old one... I agree 100% with spock... NOt worth it..

I don't get the hate for Perry. He was god awful in the beginning of the year and was sent to Toledo. Results after

AAA (32.2 IP): 3.03 ERA, 1.010 WHIP, 3.33 SO/BB
MLB (26.2 IP): 2.70 ERA, 1.275 WHIP, 1.17 SO/BB

Oh yeah, he gave up a Grand Slam in the ALCS (despite having three shut down playoff outings prior to) What a bum.

that was a small sample size and he still walked WAY too many on the ML level. he has to put it together for more than a few months at a time and REALLY cut down on his walks before we can trust him in the 7th (or later).

This. Perry has been a disappointment. He was supposed to be our closer in waiting. When that didn't happen, he was supposed to be the 8th inning guy. When that didn't happen, he was supposed to lock down the 7th. That really didn't happen either, so we're signing Dotel. Perry has a live arm, but his control sucks and he gives up runs in big spots. Reading about him personally, he strikes me as an idiot (ala Zumaya). Exhibit A... http://www.mlive.com/tigers/index.ssf/2010/02/tigers_pitcher_ryan_perry_fina.html

1 year with options, no idea how much yet.
No such thing as a bad 1yr deal with a 2nd year option. I think he'll be a bargain for us and better than most think.

Dotel would be an upgrade over Perry if we see 2011 Perry again.

Our pen is gonna be solid. Coke/Dotel for the 7th, Benoit for the 8th, Valverde for the 9th, then AlAl, Schlereth and Perry as fillers.

Let's hope A-A can return to form after the playoff debacle. I think Schelereth will be fine in the long run.

Last 3 Years Away

Benoit 37.46 RC/650 .506 OPS

Valverde 51.80 RC/650 .591 OPS

Coke 72.97 RC/650 .720 OPS

Schlereth 79.53 RC/650 .721 OPS

Pauley 82.70 RC/650 .765 OPS

Dotel 93.64 RC/650 .785 OPS

Perry 96.92 RC/650 .811 OPS

Dotel has not thrown a grondball pitch since 31 July 2009. He gives up HRs and throws a lot of walks. Yes, he strikes a lot of people out.

Percent Inherited Runners scored last 3 years

Valverde 7.7%

Benoit 21.2%

Coke 28.8%

Perry 29.2%

Dotel 34.1%

Schlereth 35.8%

Pauley 40.9% (57.1% with DET)

As discussed earlier, Dotel is no better than Perry. Except Perry is 25 and has a chance at improving. Dotel, 38, coming off a year above his last 5 or so, is due to regress.

I do not like the signing one bit. Maybe he will fair better than Juan Rincon, Denny Bautista or Jose Mesa.
