OT Joe Pa and Penn St

This whole story is already about as disturbing and heart breaking as a story could be, and it's certainly not the way I would have ever imagined JoePa finishing out his career.

To think it could be that much worse, to think kids might have been pimped out.... I just can't wrap my brain around that. I fucking pray that just isn't true. It's already bad enough, I strongly hope that is just the creation of Internet myth and rumor.

What I really don't get is how the board of trustees determined Joe needed to be fired for not going to the police and doing more, but the eye witness, McQuery, is going to coach this Saturday... and all he did was go to Joe.

Talk about a fucked up double standard.

I hope it is rumor... gosh I hope it is rumor... This whole thing is totally sad. Even sadder... The victims are being lost in this whole thing, if they aren't already.

This should be about identifying the victims, punishing those responsible and those who turned a blind eye, not about JoePa's legacy or sports. I could care less about what happens to JoePa, the University, boosters, etc. It sounds like they're gonna get what they all deserve in due time. I hope this Sandusky dude gets the Dahmer treatment in prison. A special place in Hell awaits this sick bastard.

Agree 100%.

Amen ink. I think they're going easy on McQueary since he was just a Grad Assistant at the time, but I don't give a shit where you are on the totem pole. When it comes to the molestation of children you pull rank and if that doesn't work you go the authorities your damn self. McQueary needs to go to...

I also thought it was disgraceful that the students protested the decision and supported JoePa after the firing. It's pretty insulting to the kids and their families. You're more worried about some Milano bread pushing, child sex abuse overlooking, crotchety old man than you are about the fact that a number of young men have had their lives altered for the worse forever. I suppose they get a little credit for chanting Fuck Sandusky, but come on kids...THINK!

My wife's step-sister is a student there and I'm actually going to see her this weekend. I'm interested to get her take...

I said the same basic thing to my wife last night when we saw the protesting on the news. I'll say that I'm not sure a lot of people truly "get it" at that age, but the protesting in support of that clown was disgusting. Beyond that, you really don't have anything better to do with your time that protest in the streets? Especially for an issue like this. I've got very little faith in humanity as a whole anymore.

I bet a good portion of those students just wanted to party and cause trouble.

You're probably right Mitch, but why not do the right thing and burn down Sandusky's house while drinking Mad Dog and malt liquor????

I don't know if happy is quite the right word. gooch you used to be or are in law enforcement right? What's the typical process that should be followed with a crime of this nature?

I was never in law enforcement but i did stay at a Holiday Inn. You're suppose GET CHILD OUT OF HARMS WAY and then to CALL THE POLICE.

Hahaha...yeah I know that much Mitch, but I was curious as to what process the authorities should have followed or would typically follow. Because it sounds like when law enforcement was made aware they were just like "Oh you butt fucked a 12 year old, well that's not something you should do, let's try to keep that from happening in the future."

Normally the police will involve child protective services and conduct a private interview with the child in question. They are trained to detect lies and such, and usually do a pretty good job of getting down to at least some of the truth.

Assuming they get any indication (ANY) from the kid that something has transpired, they will seek an arrest warrant.

Once that happens, the child will spend more time with professional counselors to build the case. Usually the suspect is offered the chance to take a lie detector test to prove his innocence, which usually won't prove much. I found out that in these cases they come up "inconclusive" about 80% of the time.

Two of my step daughter were molested by their biological father. I've actually been through some of this. He took off with them and hid them for two years, so by the time they were found, their mom and I were already together, and I got a first hand look at how this works.

In that case, he left the state of Oregon and moved to California after the lie detector came back inconclusive and Oregon police didn't feel they had enough to pursue with extradition, so they closed the case.

He now drives a tow truck for the Riverside police department... ironic huh?

unless you have hard evidence to the crime that was committed, you can not arrest anyone on just a statement. ink is right...they go through a process with the cps dept and other investigators to get more facts and try to find more who can fill in blanks, get more witnesses/victims and put it to the grand jury.

sad thing is....the damage lasts forever, and it takes almost that long to get the process brought to justice. you need people who see things to step up and call the police when it happens.

I am really pissed at the Grad Asst. This 28 YO ran home to daddy instead of rescuing this 10 YO. He should have been fired before Jo Pa and the Penn St prez.

PS: This is the worst thing I have heard of in sports. This tops Ugeth Urbina trying to set people on fire and hacking them with machetes.

The PDF that was linked is pretty rough to read. To be honest I don't know if I will ever be able to read through it.

The one thing I did read that I thought was telling is that Paterno did in fact turn the matter over to the head of University Police, which are regarded as the official law enforcement body of the university, and was told that CPS was involved.

So, Joe didn't do "nothing" as people are saying. He did in fact personally go to the cops... even if they are less than "real" cops... they are the ruling law enforcement body with jurisdiction over the allegations.

If Joe knew the cops were involved, and that CPS had been asked to investigate, and yet Sandusky hadn't been arrested or charged with any crime, I think it's natural for Joe to assume that the allegations against his friend of 30+ years were proven false by the proper investigators.

I'm sorry but the University police is like a seciruty guard at the mall. Did univ. police fk up, damn right. But they aren't law enforcement. Plus did Paterno talk to Sandusky, wonder what was going on? Nope. Just left it where it was. Scumbag.

Sorry to say Mitch, but you are wrong on that one. On any University, the campus police have automatic jurisdiction over any case that does not violate a pre-emptive federal statute.

Sexual contact with a minor is not federally regulated, as each state holds it's own age of consent. If Paterno had gone directly to the FBI, they would have been legally bound to turn it back over to campus police.

As for confronting Sandusky? I can see you point. But I also think that most.. not some, but most... would not want to confront a friend with something like that unless an investigation found reason to charge the person with a crime.

He went to police. He ordered Sandusky not to bring kids to the campus any more. He was informed by the proper authorities in the case that Child Protective Services were involved.

Joe probably could have done more, but under the circumstances, I think it would be fair for him to assume that the case went no where because it was a false allegation, not a cover up.
