Looks as if Jay Cutler will now be out for the rest of the year with a broken thumb on his throwing hand. Will be having surgery to repair the break.

No its being reported by several now confirming the break/surgery. Lions chances HAVE to look much better now at a playoff spot with Cutler now being down for the rest of the year.

Jay Cutler - QB - Bears

A source tells the Chicago Tribune that Jay Cutler's right (throwing) thumb is indeed fractured.
There's no word on when the injury occurred, or the severity. Cutler attempted passes on just four of the Bears' final 20 offensive snaps. He was picked off once and completed two short throws to Matt Spaeth and Matt Forte for a combined 24 yards. The Bears were in run-heavy mode anyway with an 11-point lead, but this will be a situation to monitor early in the week. We are tentatively expecting that Cutler won't miss any time.

Jay Cutler - QB - Bears

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports that Jay Cutler suffered a thumb injury in Sunday's win over the Chargers, and the Bears fear it may be fractured.
Cutler did finish the game with the injury, so we suspect it won't cost him any time. It could affect his accuracy, however. Glazer doesn't specify whether the injury is to Cutler's right or left thumb; he throws with his right hand. It's worth noting that Ben Roethlisberger has played with a broken thumb on his own throwing hand before, performing just as effectively as usual.

I don't think a broken thumb takes 8 weeks or more to heal, does it?

Roethlisberger played with a broken thumb.

Its his throwing hand thumb and IF it requires surgery which I am hearing more and more then yes it would sideline him at least for the remainder of the regular season.

Roethlisberger played with a broken thumb.

we ALL know cuntler is NO WHERE NEAR as tough as roethlisberger.......(the man quit on all of the fans of chicago in the freakin' NFC TITLE GAME against the arch-enemy packers no less, with an injury drew brees was known to play with for weeks)

Both ESPN Chicago and the Chicago Sun Times report that Jay Cutler's fractured right (throwing) thumb may end his season.
Per the Sun Times' Sean Jensen, "there is a fear" that Cutler may not play again this year, but "there will be more tests." ESPN Chicago's Mike Wright is "hearing" that there is "a chance" this could be it for Cutler's 2011 season. Wright also reports that Cutler will require surgery, so this is clearly a more significant thumb break than Ben Roethlisberger's. Caleb Hanie would take over as the Bears' starter, much to Mike Martz's chagrin.
