Potential Cap Casualties

This is true but overhauling a secondary is not an easy task. It's going to take some time.

lol. The best DBs weve had in my lifetime are bennie blades and dre bly. It shouldn't take THIS long. Nice job mayhew (who was a db and obviously knows nothing about scouting the position).

Not a ton of CB go beast mode year one but with some luck, draft pick starts, Slay starts and Houston go nickel. Some depth when the other two need it.

yes...the best case scenario would be for a rookie CB to beat out Houston. Even if Houston played at the same level as last season....as a #3 cb he would be considered good.

On both the radio and the internet, I hear fans talk about drafting a CB and cutting Houston and I really don't get it. It would be financially irresponsible to cut Houston. Even if you don't think he's any good, he's still going to be around for at least one more season because of his contract. I guess it's too difficult to comprehend for some people.

I understood better after u mentioned the cap implications. thats y I suggested restructuring if possible

Not sure how much they would actually save by restructuring...$4.8 million isn't a terrible cap number for a player like Houston. Plus you run the risk of adding more dead money later into the contract. If he sucks this year, you can cut him next year for a cap savings, if he restructures this year and sucks this year, cutting him might not be an option next year.

I suppose they could try to renegotiate, but I don't know if Houston would even be open to that.

No doubt. Let him play and then release him after the season assuming he doesn't improve.

if hes smart he would. he tried FA twice already when he was considered "good" and no one wanted him. If mayhew offers him a longer deal even if it was for less money he should take it lol.

The thing is why would Mayhew restructure? Not sure I understand how that is good for the Detroit Lions?

By looking at that I thought we didn't have a fourth not a fifth.

Nope

Lions traded a 5th to Jacksonville for Mike Thomas (awesome trade, btw)

They'll likely be getting a 4th compensatory pick for Gosder in this upcoming draft

So, the Lions end up with

Round 1 - Pick No. 10
Round 2 - Pick No. 13
Round 3 - Pick No. 12
Round 4 - Pick No. 11
Round 4 - Compensatory
Round 6 - Pick No. 13
Round 7 - Pick No. 12

Okay thanks. For some reason I thought we traded a 4th to Jacksonville.

Probably thinking of the 2012 4th for Whitehead (extra 5th received in 2012 from future 4th(2013)). Taylor was a compensatory pick last year for Eric Wright big contract to Tampa in 2012.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. Thanks.
