Preseason Game 2: Lions @ Browns Thread

I didnt watch the game due to work so dont judge to harshly but from what I have read I am concerned about the oline and the back half of the defense. Our lbs were always going to be trash so im not surprised because I felt they downgraded there. The CBs are young and the safeties arent out there yet but Delmas when healthy makes a huge difference but Quin doesnt seem to be making much of one as of yet. The Oline still cant run block but I did see some positive things said about Warford last night so thats positive. Overall I am pissed that Stafford looks the same as last year still cant lead the offense early in games which will pressure this team to be in late game contests and comebacks again so that sounds nice....ugh. Also the wrs they should just keep 5 and 4 TE. The depth there sucks and Fauria would probably add more to the offense as a third TE offensive weapon than Patrick Edwards or anyone else after Broyles at 3. Im not to concerned based on this game because JS said they werent going to show anything because they have to play later but still guys were blowing assignments and losing battles. You never want to see that.

Jim Schwartz said they're not tipping their hand and that's hilarious. There's nothing to tip. Trying to establish a 2yd per carry run game is first. Force feeding CJ is second. Dumping it off to Bush (when Calvin isn't open) is third.

Looks like the only thing to force them to be creative (AGAIN) is a bunch of losses to start the season. I wanna see something, anything that looks like progress. And more than just saying the right stuff. I'm glad it's preseason but it sure does have me nervous as all hell for when the season starts.

Ill point out mayhew chose to downgrade at the lb spot. There were plenty of affordable options in the FA market and he chose to resign levy. he chose to roll with a palmer/whitehead battle for the other spot. He chose to trade up and get whitehead and blow a 4th rounder this year that could have been a guy like khaseem greene who would have been an automatic starter for us on the outside. These are the little decisions he does throughout his tenure that add up to the team being garbage. Too many mistakes on his part....

linehan has never been creative....thats why this whole "not tipping their hand" thing is so ridiculous. WRs 2-7 are garbage and the new look oline doesnt give enough time for those guys to get open anyways. Its going to be throw to calvin or dump down to reggie all season. If i was in a PPR league reggie bush would be a first rd pick this year lol.

The funniest part about it is its not like they are going to do something original. Everything they would have done is already on tape so why not run it to get better? Instead they waste a preseason game. Broyles isn't garbage but he is made of paper.

I was mad they chose Levy over Durant. Also while I like Greene he could be just as ineffective as Whitehead its a complete unknown. That being said they didnt do enough to upgrade that position and I think the depth is terrible at Lb. Palmer is mediocre as is Levy and Tulloch is very good but it just doesnt even out. I think the secondary will get it together because they have some very good athletes at the position but right now they havent put it all together whether that is scheme related or just who is back there.

Terrible run blocking and Carey/Bentley/Bartell/LBs other than Tulloch need to get it together. Thank goodness it's preseason and vanilla schemes plus no Calvin.

Calvin must stay healthy this year.

If Gunny really did put the CBs on an island to see how they do, I hope that he got his answer. Bartell is not it. Slay had better start vs NE. He started vs the Jets and didn't even get thrown at. Bartell got beat, at least twice. Palmer winning the starting job was inevitable, but I had to laugh a bit when I saw Whitehead get pissed when he missed tackles.

Suh and Fairley are in beast mode, enough said. Ronnell Lewis is making a few splash plays here and there, but has to be good on special teams to make the team I think. Devin Taylor has great length and almost had another sack(if not for a huge hold), he could be someone to watch in a couple years.

At this pace Burleson will retire to run his clothing line. He has to make plays. He looks the part of the aged vet now. Hopefully he has a better year than KVB did last year. Edwards had a few short catches(and got hammered on one), hopefully with Megatron on the other side he can put his speed to use. Stafford is off to his typical slow starts. I want to see the full offense though. 1st game was too small a sample size, and this game we didn't have Calvin.

The lbs are worse, but we upgraded the secondary with Quin and Slay (although they haven't started him yet...), and the DEs are better than last year.
Ansah > Avril
Idonije > VandenBosch

A couple new guys in the secondary won't change the years of neglect. Houston and a bunch of shit. And don't bring up Delmas, he never plays. Can't Mayhew and company get some freakin' back up help?

Don fuckin Carey..

Last time I checked, the secondary consisted of 2 safeties and 2-3 cornerbacks, depending if it's nickel or not. Adding a quality CB in Slay and a good safety in Glover Quin can make a big difference. That's at least 40% of the secondary.

I understand that CBs get injured a lot, so that's probably what you're referring to when you say "a couple new guys in the secondary won't change the years of neglect," but I think the secondary can be significantly better than last year.

I'm also not expecting much from Delmas. In my opinion, his knees are shot and he won't be good for more than a few more games.

Their secondary was an emergency room last year. Guys need to stay healthy. They added a good safety in Quin and drafted Slay. Wtf do you expect? We need guys healthy.....thats all.

Good for you. You cant have everything. They're building up that DLine to compensate for a weaker LB crew. Not every team in the NFL has every position locked up solid....get fn real. Sometimes youre weaker in areas and stronger in others. Its not perfect like you think it should be bro.

Its hard to really be as pessimistic as some of you guys when it really IS just preseason. Who knows wtf they are testing out. Preseason is no indication of anything really. You guys know that.

Actually it's easy to be pessimistic when you see the same issues occurring as last year, pre season or not

its easy to be pessimistic when its the sanchize and Brandon weeden tearing your defense a new asshole. its really really pathedic lol. If gunthers plan was to look pathedic....job well done.

I share the concern with stafford also, he continues to look ave at best early and you can't just keep doing that, what's changed...nothing

2 games in the PRESEASON and you're concerned about Stafford? Im speechless...lmao. Cmon man!!

Stafford is what he is right now. He is above average with the potential to be a top 8-10 QB. He just isn't there yet.

They could have added a S and CB a couple years ago and then built on it the past two years to make it strong. Added depth so when the starters get injured they'd have someone besides Don freakin Carey.

You can't neglect year after year while grabbing guys like Carey, Bentley, Bartell, not to mention the others. All they do at this time of the year is signed cheap CB and hope that they can play, like Conroy Black whlo they signed twice this off season and let go twice..

I'm concerned about the secondary..and if Slay is so damn good where is he? I have hope on him but if Carey plays in front of him in 2 games, I start to wonder..

So to Tony, who asked me wtf should I expect? My answer is more..
