ProBowl for Slay, Slay+Snacks refuse minicamp Agent meets Lions Snacks+Slay to report

PFF has him 18th

18. DARIUS SLAY, DETROIT LIONS
The interceptions might not have been there this season, but targeting Slay still wasn’t beneficial for opposing quarterbacks this season. He had the sixth-best forced incompletion rate at 19.8 and was third in the NFL was 12 pass breakups.

He is currently the 13th highest paid CB in the NFL (avg $12M per year)

He's only 1/2 way through the 4 year contract he signed. If I'm the Lions I do nothing until after this year. Then I might talk extension.

6th best ?forced? incompletion rate and 3rd in pass deflections. I?ll take that all day over any other option we currently have. He fulfilled is guaranteed money portion of his contract with his production. Now reward him w an extension. #payslay

actually, he's under contract, so he is an option.

If he only wanted a 2 year contract, he should have only signed a 2 year contract.

It?s the NFL...it?s very rare that elite players play out a contract just likes it?s very rare for scrubs or injured players to be rewarded a full contract. 2 way street but only seems acceptable when the team cuts the player not when the players hold out for money.

At the time he signed the deal it probably felt good. Now that the guaranteed money isn?t there, he wants to rework the contract. I have absolutely no problem with that. You have a limited life span in the nfl, better get your money while you can.

That's the point he knows it. Go for another guaranteed year or play out the contract. Are we supposed to negotiate every year? Ask for a bigger bonus..something. He can ask for whatever he wants I not sure its in best interest for the Lions to give him a bigger contract.

Why is it ok for a team to cut a player who isn?t producing 2yrs into a 4yr deal but not ok for a player to hold out who has produced? Both the team and player sign the same contract, but only the players get look at badly when they hold out.

This is a business, the NFL. It?s how things are done. You paid flowers, paid Coleman, still have $20+ in cap space. Pay the players who?ve produced for you and have zero guaranteed dollars left. Take care of in house business.

Let’s be real...the cooperate world will tell employees all the time after a slight raise and promotion to come back and talk 6months-1yr later to re-evaluate.

Same thing in the nfl. Once the guaranteed money is gone, time to renegotiate. The team knows, player knows and a does the agent.

Must be better jobs that I have. My bosses "Here take this and be lucky you got anything for working your ass off."

Them's the rules. If the players don't like it, negotiate a different CBA deal.

It?s the same rule for the players...They have the right to hold out and the team has the right to cut.

Pro Football Focus noted yet again how good Darius Slay is, this time with PBUs. Phenomenal reflexes no doubt honed by practice against a quarterback who throws with so much velocity that it can break a finger.
Double digit pass breakups for Darius Slay since 2015!

I never said that they can't hold out. I just wouldn't extend them when they are only 2 years into a 4 year contract.

True in both cases. But the team also has the right to not cut. And, if the player holds out the team can further impose sizeable fines (sizeable to the layman).

Say the player decides to sit out an entire year...after that year the player still has that same contract length in place at the same rates...in the case for Slay and Harrison, they would still be under Lions control for two years.

The LeVeon Bell case with him being franchised does not apply here.

The hidden factor is us, the fans. It's like when Goodell said it's better for the fans when they moved SD to LA. No it was, that was a money move. If Slay gets paid more and gets hurt year 1, the ticket prices still say the same or go up. The owner and player still get paid. Every year the cap goes up which means higher prices so I can't afford to go to a game any longer. Its all a sham.

Both Snacks and Slay are proving to be team leaders not only in game situations but now showing up to camp w ZERO guaranteed money.

Stop messing around and PAY these men! Salary cap is a non issue this coming season, reward your pro bowlers that have ZERO guaranteed money on their contracts.

As a fan these holdouts are frustrating, but from afar I have no issues with it. You want these players to play, pay them, if you don’t think they’re worth it, then let them sit. Many of these players are worth millions already and probably have no issue sitting on the sidelines not risking their health.

There’s going to be a breaking point though if this starts happening enough, the league as a whole will suffer if the game’s best players are refusing to play. No amount of finger pointing and “whiny players” rhetoric is going to fix the ultimately shittier product. This will fall back on the owners 100%, they can either be stubborn or they can look at the cost-benefit analysis on whether paying their stars is worth it.
