DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers
Offense continues to go down all across the board in MLB, hitting historic levels not seen since the mid-1960?s.
There are 2 major contributing factors ? launch angles and the shift.
Players are now being taught to use launch angle techniques in order to lift the ball and hit home runs more easily. They are no longer being coached to make as much contact as possible. But while launch angles create more home runs ? and as studies show ? are tied to more wins ? they also significantly increase striking out.
Rod Carew, one of the game?s best hitters, has made eradicating the launch angle his primary mission. He believes it has ruined the game, creating an all-or-nothing approach to scoring. He says that teaching launch angles is not a one-size-fits-all and ignores each hitter?s talents and strengths. He says that hitters are not focusing on what they do best and that the purpose of the game should be getting on base.
Defensively, the shift also accounts for a downturn in offense by moving players well beyond their traditional defensive positions to cover areas where batters are most likely to hit balls. Theo Epstein joined the Commissioner?s Office to specifically address how to overcome this strategy in an attempt to return the game to producing more action and scoring.
Starting next year, the rules surrounding the shift will be modified. Teams will no longer will be allowed to have more than two infielders on one side of second base. This would also mean that if the 3Ber and SS are to the left of 2B, then the 2Ber must remain on the right side of 2B.
If you could eliminate just one of these strategies, which one would it be?
Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

Which one of these baseball strategies would you eliminate?
1. Focus on using launch angles in hitting.
2. Employing the shift in the field.
