THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers readers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic. So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our baseball-lovin? peeps.

Today, we center the discussion on Matthew Boyd and Daniel Norris and what the team?s plan for them may be in the immediate future.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

Continuing where he left off at the end of last year, Matthew Boyd has been struggling in his starting rotation role. He is currently 0-2 with a 10+ ERA and WHIP of almost 2.

After Miguel Cabrera and Jordan Zimmermann, Boyd is the next most expensive player (not signed for just 1 year) at $5.3 million and a salary that will go up again next year. He will become a free agent at the end of 2022.

Boyd is currently 29 years old and will turn 30 before the start of the 2021 season. In terms of trade value, 2 years before becoming a free agent is generally considered to be the ideal time to trade players. It is well-known that Al Avila has been trying to trade him for the past 2 years and interested teams have said the asking price was ?too high.?

Daniel Norris continues to struggle as well and is going into his second year of pitching 3 innings with Michael Fulmer as the ?opener.? After Boyd, he is the next most expensive player on the team, will earn a salary increase via arbitration and will become a free agent after next year. His ERA is approaching 5.0 and his WHIP is also near 2.

With the crop of young, inexpensive talent starting to come up, it is expected that the Tigers will not keep these two much longer. But the organization will not receive anything of value in trading them unless they can help fix their pitching.

While Boyd and Norris try to figure things out, what is the best way to use them this season?

1. Leave Boyd as a starter and Norris as 2nd opener.

2. Make both of them openers.

3. Move both to the bullpen or opener/bullpen combo.

4. With their permission, send them to Toledo to fix things.

5. Try to trade both ASAP before values further decline.

6. Wait until the off-season when they can work with an independent coaches.

7.Not sure.

8.Other

Nova to IL with right triceps tendinitis.
Could Mize fill veteran's spot in rotation and make MLB debut?

Tigers send Iv?n Nova to the IL, recall Anthony Castro.
The struggling veteran right-hander heads to the injury list leaving a hole at the back of the starting rotation.

Any chance for Casey Mize with Tigers' Ivan Nova injured? Here's what Ron Gardenhire said.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK.
Totally Tigers

It?s time again to hear from our readers! Today is the day to let us know what you?re thinking on a selected topic.
Sunday is the one day of the week where we open up the comment parameters for you, so you can get those juices flowing.
Comments on THIS DAY ONLY can be expanded to a maximum of 8 sentences.
We can?t wait to get your thoughts on the following topic.

Gregory Soto has been by far the most dominant reliever in the Tigers? bullpen. With a fastball consistently reaching the high 90?s and many in triple digits, he has been electric. His stats are impressive as he has yet to be scored upon and has 14 strikeouts in his 10 innings of work over 9 appearances. That combination has earned him a WHIP of just 0.40.
So as you can imagine, Soto stands to have plenty of suitors, between now and the trade deadline, knocking on the Tigers? door inquiring about his availability.

So what are your thoughts? Should the Tigers be shopping Soto? And if so, what would you want in return, in order to even entertain a trade?

It seems that relievers don't get much of a return...especially unproven relievers. He isn't eligible for arb until 2023. I doubt anybody comes to them with any kind of reasonable offer.

I see no upside to moving Soto

there is upside to moving him if somebody comes up with a good offer.

He has pitched 476 minor league innings and has a WHIP of 1.45

He has pitched 10 innings this year and has a WHIP of 0.4

If someone offers anything decent the Tigers should jump all over it. It's MUCH more likely that this year is a fluke than he turned the corner and is now going to be some sort of stud reliever.

Most teams are smart and won't offer shit for him.

Tigers? right-hander Buck Farmer looks on track to return from an IL stint in short order. Manager Ron Gardenhire confirmed to reporters that the important set-up man could return from a groin injury by the middle of next week. Farmer?s swing-and-miss rate is down a bit from his strong 2019 effort, but he?s nevertheless held opponents to two runs over his first 6.2 relief innings this year.
