Stafford in Focus

I still don't want to go overboard with this talent thing. Every team in the NFL with the exception of a few, have good talent. That's why parody is so strong in this league. Teams go 7-9 one year, have a huge jump the following. No one expected Kansas City to do what they did. Lions aren't oozing with talent that some of us like to think.

Lack of faith in a front office who is run by Millen's understudy?

Means absolutely nothing.....but ok!

Don't suggest that even "some" people think that.

One idiot thinks that. I'd say even the optimists here like myself and Tony think there is some talent.....but in no way do I think this is a Super Bowl team.

Playoff talent, yes.

Playoff win talent? If they somehow got a home game, yes.

But too many defensive holes to have an elite team.

Blowing a ton of picks on thunder and lightning running backs, questionable wide receivers and two top 20 tight ends will do that. Not to mention whole FA budgets to mask your failure at that same position.

It's okay, them drafting one CB in the 2nd round last year justifies that they care about the secondary.

That 2nd rounder could be really good. And maybe Austin sees something in one of the young guys. I don't know, but I'll let them take the field and prove what they can do there instead of listening to you, Cheeno or LKP and your opinions.

But yes, too many unproven players, especially on D, to think that this is even close to an elite team.

right...ESPN hates the Lions! Why would they care where any team is ranked? They are just calling it like they see it.

They miscalculated the score too. Lions scored high in everything which means lack of talent. So they just say faith. They are dumb. They know nothing about Mayhew. He's a great GM.

Adding Quin and Ihedigbo in free agency. You must have missed that.

Quin was a good addition. James Ihedigbo is a body.

Booger, they've drafted 3 or 4 players total from the secondary in rounds 1 or 2 since 2000. I quoted the stat earlier, but it's appalling. They have been allergic to fixing that problem since Millen has been in office.

How many winning seasons under Mayhew? How many playoff wins under Mayhew? Just because you think he is a good GM doesn't make it true.

He got screwed over with injuries the last 2 seasons. First 2 was the rebuild. Team is loaded with talent. 10 future winning seasons in a row on the way.

he got screwed with injuries? The reason they sucked is because lack of depth. They have some talent. There is NO WAY in hell that the Lions have 10 consecutive winning seasons! You are such a homer!

No arguments from me there. I wanted Denard at 10. However you want to look at it, there are 5 young guys with measurables that are going to fight it out for roster spots. Will they pan out, ???????.

New defense. New DC. I'm not going to sit here like LKP and say it's going to be a great Defense. I don't know. I guess I'm just more of a "prove it to me" guy. If those young CB fall flat on their ass....Mayhew will be gone. He has hitched his wagon to that secondary right now, as I believe they will be the key to the Lions season.

I like Greenwood. I hope he pans out. Stupid measurables. He showed, is his extremely short stint last year, that at least the NFL isn't too big for him. That being said, a LOT of players that have those measurables fail. A lot. Maybe Austin can get something out of him.....maybe he is nothing more than a practice squad player.

My point is that, like it or not, none of us know.......because the entire system and the man running it is new......what we're gonna get from the secondary this year. I have my opinion, you have yours, LKP has his own moronic opinion. There is so much BS arguing right now about things that literally cannot be proven until we see it live.

Too many injuries. Even depth wouldn't matter. Burleson, Broyles, Young's insanity, Best (had to use money for RB not WR). All those led to lack of WR depth. Mayhew's hands were tied last year focusing on DE,G,Safety,RB. Now he got a chance and bam Ebron and Tate.

My opinion is based on game tape, stats and facts. I'm the only one that backs up my opinion around here. It's the most informed opinion of them all.

Well when you look at it from this standpoint: The secondary is the weakest part of their team. Other than a guy going into his 2nd year (Slay), having someone who's in the twilight (Mathis), and James Ihedibgo who has really done nothing his entire career, what's better? We basically have to hitch the wagons to a new coordinator, and hope he doesn't suck. As far as the personnel, which is the major component of NFL teams, the Lions did nothing to improve themselves.

That's why I see a team like Green Bay take Clinton-Dix, and I sit here and am jealous of that because he will succeed with them. Regardless of the draft position, sometimes its okay to pick a guy that will help your biggest weaknesses, rather than drafting a 2nd TE.

Excellent.

What is your opinion then, on Green, Greenwood, Bentley, and Lawson?

Who makes the roster?

How do they perform?

Give them each a Madden Grade.

Agree with this entire post. I would have drafted differently. I disagree on the personnel, though.

Ebron is a MASSIVE improvement in terms of the pass catching TE. Will really open up things outside for CJ like he's never had since he was a Lion. Love the Tate signing too. Did we overpay, yes, but that comes with the franchises standing, IMO. He has great hands, really explosive after the catch.

Van Noy could be really special in this league. I don't think he will ever be a 15 sack/year guy.....but he will make plays. Behind the line, in coverage, and get a few sacks. He is another MASSIVE upgrade over his understudy, Palmer.

I'm scared of what the secondary might turn out to be, especially if there are injuries. But I believe this team has much more talent than it did going into 2013.

Greenwood is a Slay clone. He can stick in the back pocket and press-re-route well. Injury is the only thing holding him back.

Green is a poor man's Greenwood who has played solid for Detroit when called upon. He's a little slower hence the poor man but rebounded pretty well after a poor first half against the Ravens. 2012 was solid in a few more games.

Bentley is the typicial nickel that has good agility but little press skills. He must work on his ball skills and hold onto some picks finally. He's stronger than expected against the run and again health is a issue.

Lawson is the same as Bentley, a short fiesty player but he needs to work on avoiding PI from college. Tough to gauge a rookie.
