The Official Round 1 Draft Thread

At first glance, some analysts valued Laken Tomlinson as a second- or possibly third-round NFL draft choice.

But no matter where teams had him, the read on the 6-foot-3, 323-pounder was simple:

He'll create space.

"That's a really interesting pick. Most had him in the second, some even with a third-round grade. (But he's) one of my favorite guards in the draft," NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said Thursday after the Detroit Lions selected Tomlinson No. 28 overall in the NFL draft. "You know what that does? It gives them bookend guards (with). Larry Warford, who played at Kentucky, was a second-round pick two years ago. (Tomlinson's) a big, powerful, person-mover. People mover. I really like (Tomlinson).

"He doesn't have great feet, he's not athletic as the zone-scheme teams, but he's a people mover."

Tomlinson, who studied medicine at Duke, was the best "pure guard" in the draft, per ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr.

The Lions scored the former Blue Devil after trading the No. 23 pick to Denver for a fifth rounder this year, a fifth rounder next year and guard Manny Ramirez. Mayock wondered if the Lions would slot him at right tackle, but NFL Network cohort Daniel Jeremiah reminded viewers how important interior pass protection is for the Lions within Joe Lomardi's offense.

Per Jeremiah, a possible combination of Warford and Tomlinson would allow the Lions to protect from the inside out.

"I think he's going to play guard, guys. Mike hit on it, building up the guards," Jeremiah added. "You have Warford on one side, their offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi protects from the inside out. You have a firm pocket for a quarterback in Matthew Stafford, who is only about 6-foot-2, he has room to climb up in the pocket.

"I think this pick makes a lot of sense."

Some analysts questioned whether or not Tomlinson was a reach at this point in the draft, especially given the defensive tackle talent still remaining on the board.

But either way, there wasn't much of a consistent knock on the overall value the Lions will get from their 2015 first round choice.

"Do you take a guard at this point when a Malcolm Brown (defensive tackle, Texas), the 12th player on my board was sitting there, that's debatable," Kiper said. "But here's a kid who was really impressive throughout the draft process, and had a heck of a career at Duke."

Was a good pick. ...but this article sums up my thought exactly. Had a good first rd. ..could have had a great 1st rd

Give me a guy like Michael Bennett or Xavier Cooper in the 2nd round, and I'll feel a lot better about our depth.

I know the popular round 2 pick is a RB, but I don't think we need to do it that high.

And even with these two new O-linemen, I'd still be on board with La'el Collins in the 5th.

If mayhew is passing on guys like gregory and ray becausr of a little pot.....hes not taking collins who potentially killed someone.

I want 2005 again, Mike Williams - no Aaron Rodgers. Harrington's last season with us..if we got rid of him a year sooner could we have taken Rodgers?

I'd actually prefer David Johnson over any of the backs left. I really like Duke but I think Johnson has a ton of upside

You from Iowa too? I live about 40 minutes from Cedar Falls, and heard jack shit about him until he was mentioned on espn or nfl network a few months back. Strange

If we took Rodgers, he'd be out of the league right now, selling fake girl scout cookies in the mall.

What about a trade for Tre Mason from St. Louis?

I'm not saying he is available.....but he is a backup now.

Having smart players is important, especially when trying to overcome the negative opinions of the League and other teams for so many years thanks to guys playing dumb if not actually stupid. No more Suh, Titus long in rear view mirror. It takes time to change opinions based on past transgressions, but getting a guy like this is a huge plus not solely because of his physical abilities.

Give me a guy like this over Winston every time.

Be awesome if he amounted to anything in the NFL. I just wouldn't expect much given that he wasn't even known in Iowa. A UNI Panther wearing my teams colors would be odd.

Nowadays you never know, lots of small school RBs having success in the NFL. There are a ton of them out there that pop up out of nowhere
