BYB Podcast 104: Trying to adapt to optimism about the Tigers. 84 minutes.
The Bless You Boys Tigers Blog staff talks baseball from a Tigers? perspective.

We?re back with another episode of the Bless You Boys podcast. Assistant editor Ashley MacLennan and I haven?t caught up in a minute, so it was time for a little summit as the hot stove season gets underway. Of course, the looming ice storm of the CBA negotiations and a likely December 1 lockout of players threatens all that, making this is a very complicated time for the Tigers to be trying to ramp up to contendership.

We?ll also talk a bit about the season past, the impact of AJ Hinch, and the major organizational overhaul in both the front office and the player development staff in recent months. We will consider the Tucker Barnhart trade, which has saved us from our yearly series of articles pleading for a veteran catcher with strong defensive skills. Carlos Correa is discussed, as are Justin Verlander, Nick Castellanos, and Max Scherzer, as the virtues and ills, mostly ills, of getting the band back together is a topic the fanbase seems to keep returning to.

SATURDAY SURVEY.

It is well known that the Detroit Tigers are in desperate need of adding a shortstop to their roster for next year. In 2021, those who played the position combined for MLB?s worst defensive stats, costing the team many runs.

A top team is strong up the middle and the Tigers recently traded for catcher Tucker Barnhart. Now it?s time to add a shortstop. It was just recently revealed that the Tigers attempted to trade for Willy Adames last year but were unsuccessful.

But the team also has other needs. First base is still not settled and it?s not guaranteed that Spencer Torkelson will make the team on Opening Day.
This means that Jonathan Schoop will have to help cover first base with Miguel Cabrera, which will also force the Tigers to use more utility players up the middle.

They also need to sign at least 2 starting pitchers to join Mize, Skubal and Manning. Last year, Detroit used 13 different starting pitchers.

This year?s free agency offers 5 top shortstops seeking new contracts. There are 13 teams in need of a new shortstop so bidding wars may break out.
Here they are with ages and expected contracts:

Javier Baez (29) ? 6 years, $172 million

Carlos Correa ( 27) ? 10 years, $340+ million

Corey Seager (28) ? 10 years, $320 million

Marcus Semien (31) ? 5 years, $148 million

Trevor Story (28) ? 7 years, $204 million

By the time each of these contracts would end, the 5 shortstops would all be in their mid-late 30?s.

The Tigers have spent the last 5 years dumping some of MLB?s longest and most expensive contracts. One remains ? Miguel Cabrera. He has 2 more years to go and is owed $64 million. And he?ll be 40 years old by the time his contract ends.

Last year, his salary alone accounted for 35% of the Tigers entire payroll and has been a factor in limiting who the Tigers were able to add to their roster.

Should the team get back into signing long-term expensive contracts for these free agents? Or should they try to trade for solid talent?

What about depth? Should they sign an expensive free agent and scrimp on the other positions that need filling? Or should they try to spread the wealth and fill as many positions as possible by using their analytics department to find the best talent?

What would you do?

In order to fill their shortstop need, should the Tigers add another long-term, expensive contract?

1. Yes.

2. No.

The new CBA is going to include major changes. And when you want to make radical changes to the financials, it's going to take more than 18 days to get everyone in agreement.

Mid-level players are making less. Teams are freely tanking. Service time is being manipulated. A player's best years are under team control. Salary arbitration needs revamping. The list goes on.

Maybe both sides should have started negotiations before the end of April. Baseball can't afford to have yet another shortened season.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

On December 1st, the current CBA expires. On the table are numerous negotiations including expansion of the DH role. Currently, the AL uses it but the NL does not.

Over the years, there have been many arguments about whether or not the DH rule should apply to both leagues.

In favor of it is the argument that pitchers focus on throwing, not hitting. They are also now the most expensive components of every team and an injury or HBP while batting is simply too great a risk. Others point to the DH as creating more excitement at the plate as pitchers are not known for their hitting.

On the other side, debate focuses on the value of not having a DH. Supporters point to tradition and the increase in game strategy. Others will add that having an additional player on the team, combined with another salary, could be better spent elsewhere. All are reasons to avoid adopting the DH rule.

How would you vote if accorded one during the CBA negotiations?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog, you?ve got 10 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Ready?

How would you vote on the DH rule for the new CBA?

1. Keep the DH in the AL only.

2. Expand the DH role to include the NL.

The plot thickens.... Reports now saying that the Detroit Tigers are indeed looking at outfielders. What does this mean? Is there an odd-man out, concern over the injury-prone or July deadline trades at hand?
