Tigers 2022 Off Season for FA signings, trades, tender, nontender, Rule 5, to 2023

Scott Harris on Matthew Boyd:
"Matt is not the same pitcher that he was when he was here in Detroit. ...
I think there are some elements of his game that have developed and improved since he left Detroit. I worked with him firsthand on that in San Francisco".
.

this is the kind of statement that scares me about Harris and his "nut huggers" (not you KC...just the overwhelming majority of people that think he is some genius that will save the Tigers)

Boyd pitched 7 seasons for the Tigers. He pitched 13 innings for Seattle since he left the Tigers. There is no way in hell Harris knows that Boyd is a different pitcher than when he was with the Tigers...unless he is talking about him being older.

I'm calling BS

Well only time will tell. I want to believe that all the new people and new positions of people, with hitting, pitching, kinieseology (spelling), throwing strikes, players who will all be the type of players who don't chase like so many players here for years are the type of players he/they will systematically look for and sign and trade for like this player from the braves in the Jimenez trade.

Boyd just gave up too many homers. Maybe he learned something from the giants coaches and analytics they have.

I do not see 2023 as a good year in wins or over .500 Maybe I will be wrong.

Maybe there are players they will sign and trade for we have yet to see this happen before the start of the new year.

Every Spring/Off Season, media and coaches praise this player or that player as being different (improved). Whether it is Boyd, Inge, JaCoby Jones, Dawel Lugo, whoever. With "rare" exceptions, a player is what he is by age 25. After that, he might have an outlier season or two, otherwise, he will revert to whatever his norm is. Most have a noticeable dropoff after age 32 (Boyd). Yes, analytics and biomechanics can help. But it is hard for a player with similar mechanics since 8, 9 or 10, to suddenly do something different at age 24,25 or 26. And if the results aren't there, the player gets confused and doesn't know how to go back to the form that got him to the big leagues in the first place.

At the end of the day, a Matthew Boyd signing is not going to make or break this team. Any performance this coming season that might be an outlier isn't proof, until he can repeat it. Just like if he fails miserably from his norm isn't a good indication. We all know Boyd could put together 10-12 good starts in a row. Take it!

The metrics on Michael Lorenzen, who is in agreement on a one-year deal with the Tigers. He had a 4.24 ERA in 18 starts with LAA last year. Opponents hit .154 against his changeup and .169 against his slider.

I was hoping for Michael Wacha, let's hope this kid does well.

For those Detroit Tiger fans who are scratching their heads over the signings of Matthew Boyd and Michael Lorenzen, this isn't the same old, same old. A lot has changed now with the Tigers' decision-making team and coaching staffs.

Boyd had the chance to use the Giants' pitching lab in order to get better. The Tigers didn't have that when he was here. And now he'll have the full attention of Chris Fetter, Juan Nieves and Robin Lund - not to mention an entirely new training and conditioning staff.

When Boyd was with Detroit previously, his pitching coaches were Rich Dubee and Rick Anderson. He had only a couple months with Chris Fetter in 2021 because he was injured for most of the year. Let's see what a full year of Fetter/Nieves and Lund coaching him will do.

Detroit Tigers: Scott Harris has something up his sleeve.
There has to be more to all the starting pitchers the Detroit Tigers are signing.

I like the idea of a surplus of starters. These two FA signings are both one year deals in that $8M-$10M range. They are very similar signings to what AA did in the past...it just so happened that most of AA's one year deals didn't work out. Hopefully Harris' luck will be better.

E Rod should definitely be traded this season. He'll certainly opt out given all the money being thrown out this year. I'd think he'd bring back a decent young bat.

New President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris officially started his job on October 6th. Since he came on board, a number of employees were fired. Scouting, drafting, training, conditioning and player development were significantly overhauled. For 2 months, he has been hiring new leaders to take over and fill these departments.

In preparation for the trading season, he ousted 16 players from the 40-man roster. And since the official start date of December 10th, Harris has claimed a number of players, a Rule 5 draft, made a trade and signed 2 starting pitchers. He was also involved in a couple free agent negotiations.

During his initial press conference, Harris indicated that the roster will not be set in stone but rather the organization will be taking a year-long approach to improving the level of talent given whatever opportunities may arise.

The Harris regime is the first real new one in over 2 decades for the Tigers.
As such, it is expected that more time will be needed in order to get up to speed as all the new people settle into their jobs. Getting a lay of the land is important but the Front Office is also expected to continue to undo/mitigate the actions and direction taken by the previous GM.

Given all of this, what is an appropriate amount of time to wait in order to gauge how effective this new Front Office may be?

Are you going to pass judgment before spring training or by Opening Day?
Are you going to wait until you see how the team performs during the actual season?

Or are you going to wait until later in the summer or at the end of the season when the final standings summarize the year?

What is an appropriate amount of time to wait in order to gauge how effective this new Front Office will be?

1. Before Spring Training.

2. By Opening Day

3. Early/first half of the season

4. Second half/end of 2023 season
